The siblings Savage (Original title: The Savages ) is an American tragic comedy film from 2007 . Directed by Tamara Jenkins , who also wrote the script.

action

The siblings Wendy and Jon live in different cities in the state of New York on the east coast of the USA. They haven't seen their father Lenny for years, he lives with his partner Doris in sunny Arizona . Doris is demented and has a housekeeper who also looks after the old man - until he too shows signs of dementia. Lenny comes to the hospital, Wendy is notified.

The siblings wrestle with themselves. Lenny was anything but a good father, he had left them both early. The experiences of childhood have driven a wedge between the children and the father, so that Wendy and Jon are not only geographically distant from him. Jon works as a lecturer in philosophy at the university, Wendy keeps her head above water as a temporary worker and writes plays. Both have a partner, but Jon doesn't dare marry his Polish girlfriend, who is threatened with deportation, and Wendy's boyfriend is happily married to another. They get along well, but they are not happy, rather they seem to be blocked on an emotional and professional level.

When Doris dies shortly afterwards, the siblings travel to Arizona to attend the funeral. There Doris's bereaved relatives tell them that Lenny cannot expect anything from Doris' death. Everything belonged to her, he cannot go back into the shared house. Wendy and Jon take on the full burden of caring for their father. They visit him in the hospital and begin to build new bonds with the old man.

Jon finds a very modest nursing home for him in Buffalo near Jon's house. Lenny coped with the abrupt change in his living conditions from the desert climate of Arizona to the more rainy climate of New York relatively well, but his dementia continues. Wendy moves in with Jon temporarily, trying to find a better home for her father. When a visit to a 'prettier' home fails colossally, Jon makes it clear to her that she is not looking for something better for Lenny's sake, but rather to calm her feelings of guilt.

Lenny feels relatively comfortable in the home. The siblings get involved there and try to make his life as comfortable as possible for him. There are always misjudgments and misunderstandings, communication does not work well. Sometimes Lenny doesn't recognize his own daughter anymore. Soon after, he dies. Wendy returns to New York City . Her affair with the married Larry seems to have ended.

Half a year later, Wendy has incorporated the family story into a play and is working on its production in a small theater. On his way to a conference in Europe, Jon stops at rehearsals. He will see his girlfriend again in Poland and get to know her family. The film ends with a scene of Wendy jogging, with Larry's newly operated dog in tow, which Larry actually wanted to euthanize.

Reviews

Todd McCarthy wrote in Variety magazine on Jan. 21, 2007 that Tamara Jenkins observes, wisely, aptly, and with humor, the dynamics of the relationship between two siblings forced to look after their father. The representations by Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman are " excellent ". Numerous viewers could find the many scenes in a nursing home depressing.
