Tamara Jenkins (born May 2, 1962 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American screenwriter , actress and director . She achieved her greatest successes with the films Slums of Beverly Hills (1998) and The Savage (2007).

Life

Tamara Jenkins was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After her parents divorced, she and her three brothers were given custody of her father, a car salesman and former nightclub owner. They lived together in Beverly Hills , where Jenkins attended high school for a year and a half. In the 1990s she graduated from the prestigious Tisch School of Arts at New York University . Tamara Jenkins has been married to the author Jim Taylor since 2002 . Shortly after their wedding, she moved to the Yaddo artists' colony in Saratoga Springs , New York State .

Jenkins began her career in 1991 with the film Fugitive Love , which was shown at the Sundance Film Festival . In 1993 the black and white short film Family Remains followed , which received a special prize from the jury of the Sundance Film Festival in 1994.

She made her feature film debut in 1998 with the semi-autobiographical film Slums of Beverly Hills , which was shown at both the Sundance Film Festival and the Cannes International Film Festival . The film was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award in the categories of Best First Film and Best First Screenplay . It wasn't until almost a decade later that she finished the feature film Die Geschwister Savage in 2007 . During the nine years between the two films, she published essays and worked on sex education films, among other things.
