Laura Leggett Linney (* 5. February 1964 in New York City ) is an American actress .

Life

Linney is the daughter of the playwright Romulus Linney and great-great-granddaughter of the politician Romulus Zachariah Linney . She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Brown University in 1986 and then took acting classes at the Juilliard School .

Her cinema career began in 1992 when she starred in Lorenzo's Oil alongside Nick Nolte and Susan Sarandon . She was soon seen in exposed supporting roles alongside Richard Gere , Clint Eastwood and Jim Carrey . For the award-winning family drama You Can Count on Me and the biopic Kinsey - The Truth About Sex about the sex researcher Alfred Kinsey , she received nominations for an Oscar and a Golden Globe . She received another Golden Globe nomination for her role in the youth film The Squid and the Whale . She received the Emmy three times, including a guest role in Frasier .

Linney's choice of roles is essentially shaped by ensemble films . Among other things, she has played the role of Mary Ann Singleton three times in the film adaptation of Armistead Maupin's City Tales . In 2008 she received her third Oscar nomination for the female lead in Tamara Jenkins ' independent film Die Geschwister Savage , again for Best Actress .

Linney was married to actor David Adkins from 1995 to 2000. In May 2009 she married the real estate agent Marc Schauer. Their son was born in January 2014.
