Stadtgeschichten (Original title: Tales of the City ) is an American mini-series that premiered on June 7, 2019 on the video-on-demand provider Netflix . It is based on the city ​​stories , a book series by the American writer Armistead Maupin .

City Stories is the fourth adaptation in the series after the miniseries City Stories , also known as Stories from San Francisco , from 1993, Sweet Home San Francisco from 1998, and Further Tales of the City from 2001. It is not a direct film adaptation of a Maupin novel, but in addition to new characters, there are several characters from the series that are already known from the series, and it shares the setting of San Francisco with the books .

Mary Ann Singleton moved to Connecticut more than twenty years ago to pursue a career there. In the present (i.e. in 2019), she suffers a midlife crisis , and her husband Robert wants to divorce her. Because of this, she decides to return to San Francisco to live with her ex-husband Brian and her adoptive daughter Shawna. Once there, she learns that her former landlady Anna Madrigal recently celebrated her 90th birthday, which is why she is paying her a visit. Anna still lives at 28 Barbary Lane, and as it was twenty years ago, the street is a focal point for many members of the LGBT community. On June 28, 2017, various media reported that Netflix was planning to produce a new edition of the Tales of the City series and that Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis would re-impersonate their roles at the time, which was initially neither confirmed nor denied by the broadcaster. On April 23, 2018, Netflix finally announced that it had commissioned a new version of the city stories and ordered ten episodes. The broadcaster also affirmed that the roles of Mary Ann Singleton, Anna Madrigal and DeDe Halcyon Day will be played by the corresponding actresses from the old productions Linney, Dukakis and Barbara Garrick . The character Shawna, who did not exist in the previous series, was cast with Canadian actress Ellen Page . In October 2018, the signing of Paul Gross was announced, who is also returning in his former role as Brian Hawkins.

Lauren Morelli , who was already on the writing staff of the Netflix production Orange Is the New Black , wrote three episodes and is also the showrunner and executive producer of the series. Other producers of the series, in addition to the lead actress Laura Linney Alan Poul , who also led the directing three episodes and is already co-financed the previous adaptations, and Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner . Filming of the series began in July 2018. The interior scenes were filmed mainly in New York City , and some sequences were filmed in the Nodine Hill district of Yonkers , New York State. Most of the filming for the exterior scenes took place in San Francisco , and Mission Dolores Park was also used as a filming location.

Anna Madrigal, a very unconventional woman who owns the house at 28 Barbary Lane in San Francisco , is celebrating her 90th birthday. During the night Anna dies in her sleep. The residents come together to mourn and reminisce about their time with Anna. It also turns out that the house will not be demolished as Anna passed ownership to Ysela. Shawna follows Anna's advice and decides to take a trip around the world for her self-discovery process.
