Lauren Morelli

Lauren Morelli (born July 22, 1982 ) is an American screenwriter . She is best known for her work on the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black and for developing Netflix's City Stories , a sequel to Channel 4 's miniseries of the same name .

Professional background

Morelli, who grew up in the Pittsburgh suburb of McCandless, Pennsylvania , graduated from Winchester Thurston School and then studied dance at Marymount Manhattan College in New York City until a back injury ended her dance career.

After several years of grieving over the abandonment of her dance career, Morelli was inspired by a college professor to pursue a career as a writer. She started out with short stories and small blog posts until she got her first professional writing position on the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black in 2013 . She was named lead writer for two season one episodes of Orange Is the New Black , WAC Pack and Tall Men with Feelings . Morelli has also worked as a playwright : her short piece Roach & Rat was shown in the production of Just Right Just Now in New York.

Private

Morelli is a lesbian . In September 2014, Morelli filed for divorce from husband Steve Basilone , to whom she was married for two years. On October 4, 2016, Morelli announced her engagement to actress Samira Wiley , with whom she has been in a relationship since coming out publicly, and married her on March 25, 2017 in Palm Springs , California .

Awards and nominations

Morelli was nominated for the 2014 Online Film and Television Association Award for Best Screenplay in a Television Comedy and the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Television Comedy in 2014 and 2015 for her work on Orange Is the New Black , along with several other writers on the show.
