Haus Bellomont (alternative title: Haus Bellomont - The Hidden Passion of Lily Bart ; Original Title: The House of Mirth ) is an American - British - French - German drama from the year 2000 . Directed by Terence Davies , who also wrote the screenplay based on a novel by Edith Wharton .
action
The action takes place in the time of the Belle Époque in New York City . Lily Bart and lawyer Lawrence Selden have known each other for a long time and are attracted to each other. Since Selden is not wealthy, the friendship does not develop into a relationship.
Bart accompanies the married couple Augustus and Judy Trenor on a yacht excursion to which she is invited by Bertha Dorset. The environment assumes that Lily and Augustus are having an affair, which leads to a scandal. Bart's aunt scratches it from the will, whereupon Bart takes a job as a secretary. After a while, she quits this job and finds another one where she is terminated. She overdoses on a sleeping pill and dies.
Reviews
Derek Elley wrote in Variety magazine August 10, 2000 that the film was visually rich but emotionally dry. It is more of a collection of the scenes from the novel than a dramaturgically involved adaptation that would bring their characters and the time period shown to life. Gillian Anderson's portrayal is balanced and disciplined.
Movie service wrote that the "unusual film" connect "historical accuracy and ironic criticism with a complex psychological study of the main character" . He uses "despite all the external splendor of the furnishings" "an ascetic, tableau-like style that enables the viewer" to "break through the purely historical perspective" . It is "one of the best films of its genre, which succeeded in an independent but completely adequate implementation of the literary model" .
