Elizabeth McGovern (born July 18, 1961 in Evanston , Illinois ) is an American actress .

Life

Elizabeth McGovern came to Los Angeles with her family when her father became a law professor there. Already in high school she took part in plays. She made her screen debut in 1980 in the film A Normal Family by Robert Redford . For her appearance in Ragtime by Miloš Forman , she was nominated for an Oscar in 1982 for best female supporting role. In Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in America (1984) she embodied the childhood love of David "Noodles" Aaronson, played by Robert De Niro . From 2010 to 2015 she was in the British television series Downton Abbey in the role of Cora Crawley.

In addition to her film career, McGovern also works as a stage actress.

Elizabeth McGovern is also a singer and songwriter. With her band Sadie and the Hotheads she first appeared in public in 2008. The group has released an album whose songs McGovern developed with the Nelson Brothers, who are now part of the band. Michelle Dockery , who plays her daughter on the television series Downton Abbey , has also occasionally sung live with the band.

McGovern has been married to film producer and director Simon Curtis since 1992 , with whom she has two children.
