Simon Curtis (born March 11, 1960 in London ) is a British film producer and director . He has directed various theater productions as well as the television dramas David Copperfield and Cranford . The Marilyn Monroe drama My Week with Marilyn and The Woman in Gold are among his feature films.

Career

Curtis began his career at the Royal Court Theater and in 1982 gained his first experience as an assistant director on the film Top Girls by author Caryl Churchill . He later became an assistant director to Danny Boyle and Max Stafford-Clark. At the theater, Curtis worked on the world premieres of Road and The Rise and Fall of Little Voice by Jim Cartwright, A Lie of the Mind by Sam Shepard and Dinner with Friends by Donald Margulies . In 2010 he directed the play Serenading Louie by writer Lanford Wilson at Donmar Warehouse .

In 1996 Curtis directed the episodes of the television comedy Tracey Takes On ... for HBO . In 2005, the three-part television drama Twenty Thousand Streets Under the Sky followed , which was broadcast on the BBC Four . The series is an adaptation of the novel trilogy 20,000 Streets Under the Sky by Patrick Hamilton . In 2007 he filmed Elizabeth Gaskell's television series Cranford for the BBC , which he continued in June 2009 with two more Christmas episodes. The broadcast took place from December 20, 2009 under the name Return to Cranford .

In August 2008 Curtis realized the television drama A Short Stay in Switzerland , which was also broadcast on the BBC. The drama is based on the true story of Dr. Anne Turner, who committed suicide in 2006 in a Dignitas clinic. The film was nominated for best single drama at the Royal Television Society Awards and the British Academy Television Awards . Actress Julie Walters , who played Anne Turner, won the international Emmy Award for Best Actress.

In 2004 Curtis turned to producer David Parfitt to direct the film My Week with Marilyn , based on the books by The Prince and the Dancer and My Week With Marilyn by Colin Clark . In the books, Clark processed the harmless love affair that he entered into with the newly married Monroe while filming together. The development of the story was supported by BBC Films and the UK Film Council , with funding from film producer Harvey Weinstein at Curtis' request . The film My Week with Marilyn was shot in late 2010 and released in November 2011.

Helen Mirren played the role of Maria Altmann in the drama Die Frau in Gold , which Curtis directed and executive producer in 2015 . The story is about a survivor of the Holocaust who tries to recover a portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer painted by Gustav Klimt , that her family was stolen by the Nazis. The painting has now come into the possession of the Austrian government. After an eight year struggle, the portrait was returned to the family heirs. Curtis wife Elizabeth McGovern had a supporting role as a judge of the court

In 2019 Curtis directed Garth Stein's Enzo and the wondrous world of people . The main roles were cast with Milo Ventimiglia and Amanda Seyfried .

Private

Curtis was born in London and married the American actress Elizabeth McGovern in 1992 . The couple have two daughters and live in Chiswick, London .
