Dame Julia "Julie" Mary Walters DBE (born February 22, 1950 in Smethwick , West Midlands , England ) is a British actress . Walters often plays in comedies , but her films also feature numerous character roles. She is considered one of the most popular actresses in Great Britain.

life and career

Walters celebrated his first successes from 1982 on the side of comedian Victoria Wood in the television series Wood and Walters . After Wood's book, the pastiche Acorn Antiques was also created in 1986 , in which Walters as “Mrs. Overall ”played one of her most famous television roles.

She played her first serious role on television in 1980 in the award-winning series Boys from the Blackstuff . In 2001 she received the Laurence Olivier Award for her role in Arthur Miller's All My Sons . Also in 2001 she won her second BAFTA Award for her supporting role as ballet teacher in Stephen Daldry's Billy Elliot (2000). For this role she also received her second Oscar nomination.

The young audience is the actress especially as Molly Weasley in the film adaptations of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 .

In the film adaptation of the ABBA musical Mamma Mia! from 2008 she plays, sings and dances alongside Meryl Streep and Christine Baranski in the role of Rosie. For her services to the British theater, Julie Walters was inducted into the Order of the British Empire as an officer in 1999 . In 2008 she was promoted to "Commander", in 2017 she was " Dame Commander " and thus ennobled .

In October 2008 Walters published her autobiography , in which she reports, among other things, of sexual abuse in childhood.

She has been married to Grant Roffey since 1997, with whom she has a daughter.
