(2008), the film adaptation of the musical of the same name based on the songs of the Swedish pop group ABBA . The full cast of the first film is also involved in this, including Amanda Seyfried , Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan . Other roles include a. Lily James , Andy García and Cher too.

A first trailer was released by Universal Pictures on December 21, 2017, and two more followed in January and May 2018. The accompanying film soundtrack was released on July 13, 2018. The world premiere took place on July 16, 2018 at the Hammersmith Apollo in London . action

Five years after the plot of the previous film: Sophie's mother Donna died a year ago and Sophie sees it as her job to continue running her mother's hotel on the (fictional) Greek island of Kalokairi. She wants to throw a big reopening party and sends invitations to two of her three possible fathers, Harry and Bill, as well as her mother's two best friends, Tanya and Rosie. But at first it looks problematic: Her husband Sky is in New York and receives a job offer that he would like to accept, while a storm ruined the previous preparations for the party. She receives support from her stepfather and possible birth father Sam, who has also lived on Kalokairi since his wedding to Donna.

At the same time, Donna's story is told in 1979: after graduating from Oxford, the young woman wants to discover the world and create memories. So she travels via Paris to Greece to the island of Kalokairi and on the way there first meets Harry, then Bill and finally Sam. She spends a romantic night with each of them. She falls in love with Sam, who is already engaged, which he is hiding from her, and the two part in bitterness. Donna invites her friends Tanya and Rosie to the island and performs in a trio with them in a village bar, which quickly meets with wide approval.

Ultimately, Donna decides to stay on the island and to convert an abandoned farmhouse, which belongs to the bar owner, into a hotel tavern and to look after it. She also realizes that she is now expecting a child. Sophie also notices the same thing in the present and since Sky, Harry and Bill are arriving by boat and bringing a lot of people from the mainland as guests, the planned party can take place. Sophie's grandmother Ruby Sheridan also comes as a surprise, a singer Donna never had a good relationship with. She promises to be there for Sophie as grandmother from now on, and meets her old love Fernando again, who is now the manager of the "Bella Donna" hotel.

Towards the end of the film, Sophie has become a mother and takes her baby - like her mother Donna once did - to the baptismal font in the parish, where Donna is with her in spirit. The film ends with a performance by the entire cast of the film from Super Trouper .

reception

Reviews

The film was able to convince 81 percent of the critics on Rotten Tomatoes and received a Metascore of 60 out of 100 possible points on Metacritic .

Gunda Bartels from Tagesspiegel sees Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again an entertaining, melancholy film. Although it doesn't match the wit and drive of its predecessor, it can still convince with dynamic camera work and virtuoso cuts. You can tell that Meryl Streep , the “fixed star” of the predecessor, is missing, but this is very emotional and connects the audience. Even if the film musical is full of clichés about women, men and also Greece, the “final intoxication of song, dance and confetti” is particularly convincing.

Oliver Kaever from Spiegel Online thinks that the film is, in contrast to its predecessor, less carefree and happy, but much more serious. Since the actors have grown ten years older, the "happy anarchy of the original [...] is suddenly blown away". Figures and backdrops like the Inselhotel look ghostly; only the hearty appearance of Lily James is rousing in places. In addition, they use new, lesser-known songs, but at the same time repeat the unimaginative choreographies from the first part. Kaever also emphasizes negatively that the financial crisis in Greece is only "helplessly addressed" in order to bring more seriousness to the film.

Christoph Petersen from Filmstarts believes that the film is up to Mamma Mia! and at the same time appear much more free in terms of the staging, since the predecessor under the theater director Phyllida Lloyd is like a "filmed stage performance [s]". Lily James, "who practically single-handedly fills the flashbacks with life and good humor", is a suitable replacement for Meryl Streep. However, Petersen emphasizes the story in a negative way: You continue to tell a story and are mainly interested in integrating lesser-known ABBA songs into the story. It is true that these are mainly interpreted by actors who “do not play in the top league vocally”, and some of them take some getting used to; however, at the end, Streep shows once again "how you can get deep feelings out of a catchy pop song".

Gross profit

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again entered the US box office at number 2 on the opening weekend with box office earnings of 34.4 million US dollars . The film took the same place in the German cinema charts on the opening weekend. The worldwide revenue is 395.04 million US dollars, of which he was able to bring in 120.63 million in North America alone. 2,199,680 visitors saw the film in German cinemas, placing it at number 11 in the 2018 annual charts and generating sales of 18.24 million euros .
