Lily James (* 5. April 1989 in Esher , Surrey , actually Lily Chloe Ninette Thomson ) is a British actress .

life and career

Lily James was born in April 1989 to the musician and actor James Thomson. Her American grandmother Helen Horton was also an actress.

James attended the Arts Educational Schools in Tring and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London , which she graduated in 2010. Since 2010 she has performed under her stage name Lily James.

She began her acting career in 2010 with a few theater roles. In 2011 she got a starring role as Poppy in the fourth season of Secret Diary of a Call Girl , which gained her attention in the UK. James was also able to secure a role in the US fantasy film Wrath of the Titans , which was released worldwide in 2012. She also played the role of Lisa Temple in Fast Girls . In the same year she was hired for a guest role in the award-winning television series Downton Abbey . In it she was seen at the end of the third season as Rose MacClare . With the beginning of the fourth season, she rose to become the leading actress. With the ensemble of the series, she was awarded at the Screen Actors Guild Awards 2015 and 2016 in the category Best Acting Company in a TV Series - Drama .

In 2015, she played the main character of the title in the real- life version of Cinderella , which is based on the cartoon of the same name from 1950.

In 2018 she was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year. The ABBA musical sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again in theaters, in which James starred as the young Donna Sheridan and interpreted several ABBA songs . With When I Kissed The Teacher , Why Did It Have to Be Me? , Andante, Andante and Mamma Mia made it into the British single charts . Since 2011, Lily James has also appeared regularly in theater productions in the UK.

She is in a relationship with actor Matt Smith .
