Eleven-year-old diabetic Skunk lives in a suburb of London with her father Archie, her brother and the au pair Kasia. The summer holidays have just started and she is looking forward to a carefree time. She has a special friendship with Rick, the strange and somewhat unstable young man from the neighborhood. Everything changes when another neighbor, Mr. Oswald, brutally beats up Rick after his daughters accuse Rick of rape.

Little by little, Skunk's ideal world is collapsing: Kasia separates from her friend Mike, who is also Skunk's favorite teacher, her father is paying less and less attention to her, her first boyfriend suddenly has to move to his aunt, Mr Oswald's daughters blackmail her and Rick is in deported the insane asylum. When Rick comes home from the asylum for the first time, Skunk visits him. But when she enters Rick's house, he has already pushed his mother down the stairs, killing him and putting his father into a coma. The stress triggers a hypoglycemic shock in Skunk . Mr Oswald, of all people, finds Skunk and saves her at the last minute.

In a dream sequence, Skunk says goodbye to everyone from their childhood. She wakes up in the hospital, her father is sitting by her bed.

The film was awarded the Golden Eye of the Zurich Film Festival in 2012.

Actor Rory Kinnear was named Best Supporting Actor at the 2012 British Independent Film Awards . The film was also named Best British Independent Production.
