Cillian Murphy (born May 25, 1976 in Douglas , County Cork ) is an Irish actor .

Life

Cillian Murphy grew up in Ballintemple, a district of Cork , as the oldest of four children. His father worked for the Department of Education and Skills , a government agency, and his mother was a French teacher. In his childhood Murphy was very active musically and wrote his first own songs. Raised Catholic by birth as a native Irishman , he attended a denominational school in his youth, where he often got into trouble because of his behavior. Not particularly interested in sports, his English teacher at the time, Irish poet and author William Wall , recommended that he give acting a try. Murphy took note of this but decided to pursue his original dream of becoming a rock musician.

In his early twenties, Murphy played guitar and singer with his younger brother in their own band called The Sons of Mr. Greengenes . However, a contract with a London music label planned for 1996 failed due to a lack of money and the compulsory schooling of his brother, who was still underage at the time. So the band was not successful. So Murphy began studying law at University College Cork that same year . After Murphy saw a stage production of A Clockwork Orange there, his interest in acting was revived. He then joined the local theater company and appeared in a number of different stage performances. As a result, he broke off his already poorly going studies and decided to become a full-time actor.

Murphy joined an acting group around the playwright Enda Walsh , with whom he toured Europe , Canada and Australia for two years and staged the disco production Disco Pigs . Since then he has increasingly been seen in leading roles. In the same year he starred in the thriller Red Eye alongside Rachel McAdams and in the drama Breakfast on Pluto alongside Liam Neeson .

In 2006 he starred in Ken Loach's Golden Palm Prize winner The Wind That Shakes the Barley , which deals with Irish history. In 2008 he took over the role of Dr. Jonathan Crane , in Nolan's film The Dark Knight , which only made a brief appearance. Also in 2008, he appeared in The Edge of Love as William Killick, alongside Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller .
