Dunkirk is a historical war film directed by Christopher Nolan . The film was released in British and US cinemas on July 21, 2017 and in cinemas in Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland on July 27, 2017. Dunkirk tells of the Operation Dynamo , the largest ever military rescue operation in world history, when during the Battle of Dunkirk in World War II almost the entire British Expeditionary Force from the encircled by German troops City Dunkirk (English: Dunkirk ) via the English Channel was evacuated.

action

Location of Dunkirk in France

France in the spring of 1940. A group of English soldiers roamed the besieged French coastal town of Dunkirk . The enemy urged them to surrender through leaflets. Suddenly they are shot at and only soldier Tommy can escape. He goes over the dunes, where he meets the soldier Gibson, who is just burying a dead man. Thousands of soldiers, mostly British, are waiting on the beach for the 70 km crossing to Great Britain . To avoid the long lines in front of the pier, Tommy and Gibson carry a seriously wounded man to a hospital ship. The rescue operation is coordinated from the pier by Navy Commander Bolton. He had to watch the hospital ship, marked with the Red Cross symbols, be hit by a German bomber while casting off and sink, damaging the pier . Tommy and Gibson are lucky if they get on board another warship . But this is also attacked, this time by a submarine that fires a torpedo . Gibson frees some of the soldiers trapped in the belly of the ship, saving them from drowning. You have to go back to Dunkirk, where a replacement pier was built during the low tide. The ebb tide had also left a boat on the beach that Tommy and Gibson and a small group of soldiers use to escape the next high tide. Alex, one of those soldiers, believes Gibson is a German spy because he hasn't spoken a word, but the truth is he's French who the British didn't want to bring to England for their rescue mission. This escape plan also fails because the ship is shot at by German soldiers and also sinks. While Tommy and Alex manage to escape from the sinking wreck, Gibson gets tangled up trying to get out and drowns.

Meanwhile, Mr. Dawson, along with his son Peter and his friend George Mills, are trying to get as many soldiers back home as possible across the canal on his small private boat, which bears the name "Moonstone". Dawson's older son was a pilot but was shot down during the third week of the war. With a large amount of life jackets, they cast off and drag a survivor out of the water whose ship was destroyed by a torpedo attack. The traumatized soldier definitely doesn't want to go back to Dunkirk, where he just escaped. When he tries to turn the wheel around, he pushes George down the companionway in a scramble . George sustains a head injury in the fall, which he succumbs to a few hours later.

The pilot Farrier tries to protect the lifeboats with his Spitfire and, together with other pilots of the Royal Air Force, including his comrade Collins, who has to make an emergency landing on the water after being hit, engages in a relentless air battle with the Germans. Below Farrier also sees fishing trawlers and boats that have set off from England to Dunkirk to do their part to save the encircled soldiers.

The soldiers cheer and Commander Bolton is almost speechless when, through his binoculars , he sees the civilian rescue units rushing through the surf in their small boats and dinghies . The crew of the Moonstone not only freed the pilot Collins from his sinking Spitfire, but also pulled many other soldiers out of the oily water off the French coast. But the rescuers have to turn off before they can take all the castaways on board, since a hit German bomber crashes directly over the oil-contaminated area and ignites it in a flash. Tommy and Alex are among those rescued by Dawson and his son. The Moonstone takes them to Dorset . Contrary to their expectation of having disappointed the local population, they are celebrated there. In a daily newspaper they read Churchill's speech We Shall Fight on the Beaches, given the day before in the House of Commons . Bolton, however, remains on the beach in Dunkirk and plans to save the French soldiers who have been surrounded. Farrier is captured by the Germans after he was able to get some of their planes out of the sky, but then had to make an emergency landing on the beach in Dunkirk because he ran out of fuel.

production

Pre-production and construction of the script

A film of the same name about the events with John Mills and Richard Attenborough appeared as early as 1958. The film Dunkirk, June 2, 1940 , based on a novel by Robert Merle , also took up the subject from a French perspective in 1964. British-born and raised filmmaker Christopher Nolan directed the new film adaptation of the events and also wrote the script for the film. He developed the idea of making a film about the evacuations of Dunkirk back in the mid-1990s when he and his future wife Emma Thomas were crossing the English Channel from England to Dunkirk. The journey for Nolan and Thomas took 19 hours because a storm severely delayed the journey. On the delayed crossing, the two of them felt for the first time how difficult the endeavor must have been in 1940. However, since a film project on Dunkirk required a high budget and filmmaking skills, he put the idea off long when he was still gaining experience as a filmmaker. It wasn't until 2014 that he took up the idea again and started working on the script. For this he researched historical images and documents, and also met with historians and surviving World War II soldiers who had taken part in the evacuation.

Nolan noted that the Dunkirk event was crucial to the collective memory of the British: “It's really part of the national DNA. As a British person, it's in your bones. You first hear the story as a child in mythical, somewhat simplified narratives. The more you find out about the reality of the evacuations, the more you find out about the complex historical truth of the matter. ”Nevertheless, Dunkirk can also be seen as a“ universal story ”. Nolan suspected that the events around Dunkirk, despite this mythical significance, had not been made into a film for decades, because the British film industry could not have managed such an elaborate staging on its own and production money was needed from Hollywood. Nolan saw the term "war film" for Dunkirk critically, it was rather a "survival film" in which the characters had to escape and in which the usual fighting would not take place for war films.

Five months before the premiere of Dunkirk , Nolan announced that the film would be told from three different perspectives and that there would only be a few dialogues. In the three sections you can see the events through the eyes of two soldiers stationed on land, viewed from the sea through the eyes of a rescuer and a rescued person and from the air through the eyes of a pilot. Nolan explained that the various soldiers had been involved in the war for different lengths of time. The soldiers remained on the beach for several weeks on land, and those involved on the water and in the air had been involved for a much shorter time. The film shows three overlapping timelines from three different perspectives, with the soldiers on the beach focusing on young Tommy and Alex. The experiences at the three locations are told in parallel and anachronistically and in the film with the fade-ins 1. The pier - 1 week, 2. The sea - 1 day and 3. The air - 1 hour , before the three perspectives merge towards the end . Although Tommy seems to be in the foreground in the film due to the narrated time of one week and the resulting longer narrative time , the film does not have a main character , which is why the production company or distributor Warner Bros. did not make a nomination proposal in the category Best Actor for award ceremonies . Nolan called Dunkirk his most experimental film since Memento because of its narrative structure .

In his staging, Nolan tried to bring the viewer directly into the action and to forego theatrical effects - such as giving the characters long and emotional background stories. With his film he also wanted to emphasize the now unpopular idea of collective responsibility in an increasingly individualistic society: “We live in an era in which the virtue of individuality is very overrated. The ideas of shared responsibility, communal heroism and what can be achieved through a sense of community are out of date. So Dunkirk is a very emotional story for me because it represents what has been lost. "

Cast and staff

Fionn Whitehead , here at the world premiere of the film in London, plays the common soldier Tommy in the film

The largely British cast was made up of a mixture of unknown young actors and established film actors. The first two newcomers, Fionn Whitehead as soldier Tommy and Tom Glynn-Carney as captain's son Peter, make their film debut in Dunkirk . Harry Styles , a member of the band One Direction , plays Alex, a soldier stationed on land. For Styles it was also his first major role as a film actor. Nolan deliberately wanted to fill the soldier roles with very young, around 20-year-old actors, as many of the soldiers included would have been more of that age.

In addition, actors with more film experience can also be seen: Tom Hardy and Jack Lowden play the fighter pilots in the film, Oscar winner Mark Rylance and actor Cillian Murphy took on the roles of the civilian Mr. Dawson and one of the soldiers he rescued. Barry Keoghan as the tragically dying youth George, James D'Arcy and Kenneth Branagh as high-ranking officers and Aneurin Barnard as the French soldier who pretends to be British have other roles . Michael Caine speaks Fortis Leader, the third British pilot alongside Collins and Farrier, but remained unnamed in the credits for this cameo .

The cameraman was Hoyte van Hoytema , with whom Nolan had already worked on his previous film Interstellar . For the film editing, Nolan worked again with Lee Smith , with whom he had last realized Interstellar together and who was nominated for an Oscar in 2009 for the film The Dark Knight . Lee said Dunkirk was always conceived as the third act of a movie, and the viewer was thrown straight into the action with no backstory. It's about a burning desire to survive, and the film does without the dialogues that would normally be written for a WWII movie, Lee said. Nathan Crowley created the scene together with Emmanuel Delis and Gary Fettis .

Filming and equipment

The boat Moonstone, which is an important location in the film, while filming

Filming began on May 23, 2016. The film was shot in the northern French port town of Dunkirk (Dunkerque) on the Côte d'Opale , the original location of Operation Dynamo , as well as in the English towns of Swanage , Weymouth and other parts of Dorset . Many of the scenes in the English Channel were not shot in this one, but in the Dutch IJsselmeer near the city of Urk , as the IJsselmeer has no tides and little swell, making it a more pleasant location. In the United States , filming took place in Los Angeles and the California coastal city of Rancho Palos Verdes , where it ended on August 25, 2016. Over 70% of the film was shot with IMAX cameras on 65mm / 15perf film, the rest on 65mm / 5perf film . The aspect ratio is 1.43: 1 for the IMAX shares and 2.20: 1 for the 5/70 shares.

In Dunkirk, the film was shot at Plage de Malo-les-Bains and at the nearby Dune Dewulf. At Weymouth Harbor , the harbor promenade along South Parade and the area around Custom House Quay had been closed to filming. On July 25th and 26th, 2016, the film was shot in the nearby coastal town of Swanage , on the railway station there and in an old train belonging to the Swanage Railway . Historical warships and small boats, which were involved in the Second World War and in some cases directly in Dunkirk, were used in the sea scenes. These were gathered for months from all over the world for the shooting.

A Supermarine Spitfire at the Duxford Aerodrome

In early August 2016, filming resumed at Daedalus Airfield in Lee-on-the-Solent , Hampshire, where museum planes were launched and flown for two weeks for filming, including a Supermarine Spitfire and a Hispano Buchon that was externally matched to a Messerschmitt Bf 109 . A modified Jak-52 , similar to the Spitfires , was used with Imax cameras mounted behind the front pilot's seat and on the wings for the cockpit shots filmed in flight, a Piper Aerostar with a camera mounted on the stern and in the nose of the fuselage as a platform for the off aerial footage of the aerial battles filmed from an external perspective. Scenes that show the destruction of airplanes in the film were achieved through post-processing on the computer . Overall, however, Nolan tried to keep the amount of CGI effects as low as possible and to do practical stunts.

At the end of August, filming took place at the Point Vicente Interpretive Center in the Californian coastal town of Rancho Palos Verdes and the lighthouse located there, the Point Vicente Light, where further aerial battles are simulated with the aid of an aircraft attached to a crane device and the use of micro-explosive devices, propane gas flames and other pyrotechnics were. The peninsula was chosen because of its elevated location. In the background of these recordings, unlike the recordings in Dunkirk, the Pacific can be seen.

Film music and sound design

The soundtrack was composed by Hans Zimmer , who started work in January 2016. Here he worked with Lorne Balfe and Benjamin Wallfisch . Since the film lacks dialogue, the music plays a key role. Patrick Heidmann from epd Film thinks that the sound and the exciting, unfamiliar film music are also more important than the pictures by cameraman Hoyte Van Hoytema because of the few dialogues. Zimmer combined the film music with a recording of a ticking pocket watch belonging to director Nolan. Zimmer also processed other sound noises in the film music, such as interwoven violin and synthesizer sounds, which means that it comes along with the speed of an action film from the 1990s, according to Blake Goble of Consequence of Sound , and adapts to the individual moments of the film. Kathrin Häger from Filmdienst describes: “Sometimes the swelling scores are reminiscent of the sounds of an echo sounder , sometimes of metal struts rubbing against each other, then again of sirens that put you in a riot." Peter Debruge from Variety says it is not so much about music , but rather a bass-heavy, atmospheric background noise. His colleague Kristopher Tapley thought Zimmer was a promising candidate for the upcoming Academy Awards , whose score was incredibly effective at driving the film forward at all times. The sound designer Alan Meyerson was honored for his work as part of the Cinema Audio Society Awards 2018th

The soundtrack comprises eleven pieces of music and was released on July 21, 2017 by WaterTower Music as a download and on CD. It has been available in Germany since July 28, 2017. The soundtrack was released on vinyl on October 13, 2017. The title Supermarine was released on July 6th by Warner Bros. on YouTube and Apple Music .

Marketing and Publishing

On May 23, 2016, photographer Pierre Volot published several photos from various film sets on Twitter using the hashtags #dunkirk and #dunkerque . The first trailer for the film was released in August 2016. In December 2016, an English movie poster and a first German long trailer were released. In March 2017, Nolan presented his film project at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, where the film industry is taking a look at the upcoming summer film season and to which representatives of the Associated Press were invited. Another long trailer followed in early May 2017.

Dunkirk celebrated its world premiere on July 13, 2017 in the presence of the director and several actors at the Odeon in London. Even Prince Harry and some veterans of World War II attended the premiere. The film was released in British and US cinemas on July 21, 2017 and in German cinemas on July 27, 2017, including in the 70 mm monumental format. After an eight-week hiatus from foreign films, Dunkirk hit Chinese cinemas on September 1, 2017. The film was presented as part of the Galway Film Fleadh on July 16, 2017. On June 19, 2019, the film was included in the Netflix program.

Age rating

British soldiers evacuated from Dunkirk after arriving in England

In the United States, the MPAA rated the film PG-13 due to its intense war experience and some expressions. The youth-friendly rating had sparked fears that the film might show romanticized ideas about war instead of a realistic depiction of the events. In response to these allegations, the director said that too often other films had portrayed the brutality of the war. Although his film is very intense, it doesn't necessarily deal with the bloody aspects of a battle, according to Nolan.

In Germany, the film has been approved by the FSK from the age of twelve. In the statement of reasons for the release it says: “With the tension kept high by the dramaturgy and music, the film concentrates on the experience of the mostly young soldiers between despair and the will to survive and also addresses ethical aspects of the war. Despite the fact that there are largely no bloody pictures, the threatening atmosphere and individual depictions of dying can frighten children of primary school age. From the age of 12, these elements can be put into context and, not least because of the clearly historical setting, they can sufficiently distance themselves from the action. The relatively conciliatory end also ensures that the film is a challenge for the age group of 12 and over, but not overwhelming. "

In Austria, the Youth Media Commission (JMK) recommended an age rating of 14 years and over. In the explanation she states that the narrative structure of the film is too complicated for a younger audience. Likewise, the storylines, which are split into different timings, could lead to confusion. Although the director omitted extremely bloody scenes for the most part, some scenes were not suitable for a younger audience in terms of their intensity. The fact that the plot of the film is based on real events also increases the emotional impact significantly. From the age of 14, emotional overload and disorientation are no longer to be expected.

On social media

Around the day a trailer was released on May 5, 2017 by Warner Bros., more than 808,000 new conversations about the film had started on social media , making it top of the social media hit list at the time.

Reviews

The film has so far won over 92 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 8.7 out of a possible 10 points. As part of the 2017 Golden Tomato Awards , the film emerged as the winner in the Best Drama Category .

The film has been described as a masterpiece and best film of the year by critics, including Chris Nashawaty of Entertainment Weekly , who says it can be called a work of art. David Ehrlich of IndieWire describes Dunkirk as a largely bloodless, but deeply harrowing war epic and is the best film Christopher Nolan has ever made. Time Out's Dave Calhoun says it's a film with no heroes and no simple story. Rather, the attraction in the film comes from the action, says Calhoun. Peter Debruge of Variety says Nolan has found a way around the technology used by using a kind of heightened sense of realism to create what anfühle is as if you are doing immediately when you are in the cinema.

Negative reviews accuse the film of historical and dramaturgical errors. In a Guardian review , writer David Cox described the film as "anemic, boring and hollow". Among other things, the film offers the viewer no historical context and ignores key events of the rescue. The death of the soldiers is anonymous, the horror of the war cannot be felt. The confusion of chronology would seem silly. In the Times , Ben Macintyre mentions various historical inaccuracies, but above all criticizes the fact that Bertram Ramsay, who played a key role in the evacuation, is not mentioned in the film. In contrast, Andreas Kilb wrote in the FAZ that Dunkirk is “not a normal war film, but rather about tearing the viewer out of the narrative cage that protects us from direct contact with what is happening”. Nolan himself also stated that his film “is not a classic war film”: the enemy is not even named, war politics only appear marginally and the classic war film moment, when a card is rolled out at headquarters, is intentionally missing.

The film shows how the soldiers experienced the same event from different angles

Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter says Dunkirk contrasts the very different perspectives of how different soldiers experienced the same event: the tens of thousands of men standing in line like ducks on the beach, afraid of an enemy attack, waiting for a passage. Above them in the clear blue sky are the pilots fighting an air battle with their opponents, and then the soldiers crouching on the bottom of a boat almost panicking because of the random bullets they hit. Even if hundreds of thousands of soldiers are in the same great battle, says McCarthy, each individual must react as the situation demands at the moment.

In the mirror it was pointed out that the film had many gripping sequences, but suffered somewhat from an interlaced narrative style and a booming sound design. Director Nolan does not lose sight of the essentials. The camera lingers longer than necessary on orange life jackets: "You can also understand the film as a metaphor for what has been happening in the Mediterranean for years."

Shortly after the 2017 Academy Awards and before the film premiered, Tim Grierson and Will Leitch from The New Republic brought Dunkirk as Best Film and Christopher Nolan as Best Director for the following year's awards ceremony . The film is also a potential Oscar candidate for Andreas Wiseman from screendaily.com , and Sabienna Bowman from bustle.com expects more than one nomination for the film. Variety's Kristopher Tapley sees film editor Lee Smith as a promising candidate. Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema reached a new level of understanding of depth with his work, which also predestined him for an Oscar. Likewise, the sound, the sound editing and the film music are Oscar-worthy, so Tapley.

From the German Film and Media Review was Dunkirk with the predicate particularly valuable provided. The reason says: "Direction, script, camera, the performance of the actors' ensemble [...] and the ominously pulsating music by Hans Zimmer come together here to create a great cinematic battle picture."

Gross profit

After its theatrical release, the film topped the box office in a variety of countries including China, South Korea, Russia, Japan, the United Kingdom, France, Australia and the United States, where the film opened on its weekend grossed over $ 50 million. The film's worldwide revenue from theatrical screenings to date is $ 525.6 million, making it the 19th most successful film of 2017 . The film recorded a total of 748,202 visitors in Germany.
