Hoyte van Hoytema (born October 4, 1971 in Horgen , Switzerland ) is a Dutch cameraman .

Life

Hoyte van Hoytema was born in the Swiss canton of Zurich , where his father worked as an architect , but grew up in the Netherlands . After receiving twice a rejection of his application at a Dutch film school, he went with his brother to the Polish Lodz at the prestigious National School of Film, Television and Theater , where already the likes of Roman Polanski , Krzysztof Kieślowski or Andrzej Wajda been informed were. Since he did not want to learn Polish intensively , he decided on the latter of the two courses offered, directing and camera . At that time, however, the university was so underfunded that you were only allowed to work with old Arri cameras on 35mm film that the Germans had left behind during the Second World War . However, these had the disadvantage that they constantly produced loud background noises. But van Hoytema saw it as an advantage, as it made it necessary to make films without much dialogue ( Med de där kamerorna var det också en ren nödvändighet att göra filmer utan så mycket dialog ). Already during his studies he was inspired. Everyone will receive their wages… from Claude Lelouch and a retrospective from Dutch television by Nicolas Roeg and the camera work by Robby Müller . After only three years, however, he left the university to go to work. After working in Poland and the Netherlands, he came to Norway, where he met the producer Malte Forsell, who brought him to Sweden to film The Return of the Dance Teacher with him .

After shooting a few films, commercials, and television episodes, Tomas Alfredson became aware of him. Both met to talk about filming So sinster die Nacht and got along very well on an intuitive level ( Op intuïtief niveau kunnen wij heel goed met elkaar opschieten ). Van Hoytema was engaged and was able to win critical acclaim as well as numerous nominations and awards for his work, including the Swedish Guldbagge award for best camera , through elaborate scenes in which both analog and digital techniques were used .

After he received a Guldbagge for Best Cinematography for The Girl for the second time in a row, the producers of The Fighter noticed him, so that he took over the camera work in his first Hollywood film. However, the work was unfamiliar to him as, according to the trade union rules there, he had to work with two additional cameramen. He himself had previously taken on all the work on his films.

After another collaboration with Tomas Alfredson on the spy film Dame, König, As, Spion , van Hoytema filmed the drama Her for Spike Jonze . In 2013, Christopher Nolan's science fiction film Interstellar followed, his biggest project to date, in which he replaced Nolan's regular cameraman Wally Pfister . He was then hired as a cameraman for the 24th James Bond film Specter , which is directed by Sam Mendes .

Van Hoytema describes himself as a film fetishist ( Jag är fortfarande en filmfetischist ) and appreciates less the new digital technology, including the new RED camera, than older technologies.
