Tenet (German about principle or belief ; the title and the name of the antagonist and other people or companies in the film refer to the Latin Sator Square ) is a science fiction - action - spy film by the British - US American director Christopher Nolan , who came to German-speaking cinemas on August 26, 2020. It is Nolan's eleventh feature film.

action

In an attack on an opera house in Kiev , a Russian secret service force, which also includes the protagonist and his partner, agents of the US CIA , intervenes. The protagonist can secure the object he is looking for , an alleged container with plutonium , but decides with his partner to save the lives of the audience by removing the explosive devices installed in the opera hall. An unknown shooter with a red cord on his equipment comes to his aid, who is apparently moving back in time. The protagonist and his CIA partner return to the Russians, who realize that they have been betrayed and torture them. The protagonist manages to swallow a supposed suicide pill.

The protagonist wakes up on a ship off Denmark , where he learns from his superior Victor that the pill was not fatal and that he was only in a coma. Officially declared dead, he is assigned to a new secret mission called "Tenet". The Nysted Havmøllepark wind farm team will bring it back to shore. In a secret facility he learns from the scientist Barbara that in the future people will have succeeded in reversing the entropy of objects so that the objects are inverted temporally: bullets are not shot with a gun, but caught. His mission is to find out the origin of these objects and prevent a war on today's world.

The origin of the inverted bullets leads to the arms dealer Sanjay Singh in Mumbai . The protagonist seeks help from his British colleague Neil. Together they gain access to the arms dealer's apartment in a hermetically sealed skyscraper, but find out that his wife Priya runs the business. She tells the protagonist that it was ordinary ammunition and that a Russian oligarch living in London by the name of Andrei Sator was responsible for the inversion. Priya gives the protagonist access to the British secret service officer Sir Michael Crosby.

The protagonist learns from Sir Michael Crosby in London that Andrei Sator can only be accessed through his wife Kat. She is an art expert and has found an art forgery of a painting by Francisco de Goya by a forger named Arepo to be genuine, which her husband had bought for a lot of money. The protagonist confronts her and she tells him that her marriage to Andrei Sator has broken up. Her husband knows about her mistake and uses it against her and their son. During an excursion by ship off Vietnam , he offered her to let her go if she would let him have their son. She also saw a strange woman there who had left the ship they shared and whom Kat assumed was her husband's lover. The protagonist convinces her to reveal the hiding place of the picture to him. It is located in a Rotas bonded warehouse at Oslo Airport Gardermoen . Together with Neil and the airport employee Mahir, the protagonist arranges a plane accident and breaks into the customs warehouse at the airport with Neil. There, however, they are attacked by two masked people, one of whom is inverted, and cannot finish the job.

The protagonist learns from Priya that Andrei Sator has a strong interest in plutonium 241, which is to be transported to a safe place by means of a high-security transport. He asks Kat to arrange a meeting with her husband. At a dinner on the Amalfi Coast in Italy , Andrei Sator makes it clear to him that he will kill him in a cruel way, but the protagonist arouses interest by referring to the plutonium and is invited to a boat trip. Sator reveals to his wife beforehand that the image was not destroyed. On the boat trip together, his wife pushes him into the water, but the protagonist saves him. Sator explains to him that he once worked in the closed city of Stalsk-12 of the Soviet Union and made important finds there. Both make an agreement: the protagonist will steal the plutonium for Sator and in return he will release his wife.

Together with Neil, the protagonist can watch the dangerous transport on a motorway in Tallinn and steal the supposed plutonium, which is, however, a special item like the one in the Kiev Opera. On the highway, the protagonist is stopped by an inverted car that has crashed. Andrei Sator and his men intervene in events from the future. In doing so, they communicate with themselves in the present and can bring the object under their control. Kat is badly injured by Sator from an inverted bullet. With the support of a paramilitary force, the protagonist and Neil, together with the injured Kat, invert themselves with the help of a machine. Kat's condition can improve due to the backward time during the inversion. While trying to beat Sator on the autobahn, the inverted protagonist had an accident, something he had already seen during the chase.

The inverted get back on board a container ship to their break-in at Oslo Airport, where a second machine there is transported back to the forward time. The two men against whom the protagonist and Neil fought in their break-in were actually the protagonist himself - once inverted and once non-inverted.

During the chase on the autobahn, the protagonist heard that Andrei Sator was talking about an "algorithm". He learns from Priya that in the future a scientist will be able to find a method to reverse the entire entropy of the earth, which would lead to the end of the world. Therefore, this "algorithm" will be divided into nine parts. Each part is then sent back in time. Every nuclear power in the world has kept one safe in the past. Andrei Sator now has all nine parts together. The protagonist realizes that Andrei Sator has equipped himself with a dead man's switch so that the “algorithm” is triggered when he dies. Kat points out that her husband is terminally ill with cancer. The protagonist is certain that Andrei Sator will invert in order to return to a happy moment and then die and take the world with him. Kat is certain that this was the time when he made her an offer on the ship off Vietnam to release her but keep their son with him.

The protagonist, Neil and the paramilitary unit go back in time to the closed city of Stalsk-12, where the "algorithm" is kept. Half of the unit works in the regular schedule and the other half inverted. Your goal is to render the "algorithm" harmless. Kat inverts at the time on the ship to prevent Sator from killing himself before the "algorithm" is secured. Then she wants to take revenge on him and kill him herself.

The units advance into the city in skirmishes, some of which take place in the regular course of time, some as an inversion. The protagonist and Ives, the unit commander, arrive at the tunnel that leads to the “algorithm”, but cannot reach it through a closed door. Andrei Sator meanwhile sees through the game and establishes a communication link with the protagonist. Neil as part of the inverted units goes back to the regular timing. When the protagonist comes under fire, an inverted masked shooter with a red cord on the equipment opens the door from the inside. Kat kills Andrei Sator, but with Neil's help, the "algorithm" can be brought to safety in time for the explosion. Kat leaves the common ship and is the woman she had seen before. Ives, the protagonist and Neil split up. Neil realizes that it was he who opened the door from the inside, inverted. There is also a red cord on his equipment. He explains to the protagonist that the protagonist himself will recruit him in his future, Neil's past.

In present-day London, Priya wants to kill Kat, but the protagonist beats her and shoots Priya with her shooter. Kat had called him earlier and said she felt she was being followed.

reception

The film scholar Marcus Stiglegger points out that "Tenet" is part of the system of Nolan films about the past, future and present. Nevertheless, it is not a classic time travel film : "It is indeed the case that this momentary simultaneity of moving forwards and backwards in time plays an important role."

Sven Hauberg writes in his review for the teleschau news agency: “If there is another reason why cinema shouldn't die, here it is: 'Tenet', the spectacular new film by Christopher Nolan, is an action spectacle that is the big one The screen deserves. ”It is not always easy to understand the complex plot of the film. "But the nice thing about 'Tenet' is: Even if you don't always get excited about what's happening, you still see a damn great film."

In Der Spiegel , Lars-Olav Beier explains that director Nolan has cast the leading role with the Afro-American actor John David Washington . In one scene, the protagonist stands across from a blond white woman who towers over him by half a head. Instead of hiding the difference in size, as was customary in the past, Nolan emphasized it. When he lets the super agent approach the woman to kiss her, the viewer has the impression that he has to stand on tiptoe to do so. Beier concludes his review: "A larger-than-life hero has rarely looked so cool on screen."

"With its staging strengths and its overwhelming force, Christopher Nolan's TENET is the best example of cinema as a unique experience for all the senses", stated the German film and media rating and awarded Tenet the title of particularly valuable.
