Walter "Wally" Pfister (born July 8, 1961 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American cameraman and director .

Life

Wally Pfister was best known for film projects under director Christopher Nolan . For four of the films produced in this collaboration ( Batman Begins , The Dark Knight , Prestige - Die Meister der Magie und Inception ) he was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Camera and won the 2011 award for Inception . Their first film together was Memento from 2000. Pfister is a member of the American Society of Cinematographers .

Pfister began his career in the film business as a simple cameraman in the late 1980s. In 1990 he worked several times as head cameraman of the second unit , followed in 1991 with Unborn - Child of Satan, his first assignment as an independent cameraman. Until the end of the 1990s, he mainly worked on several direct-to-video productions and television films .

In spring 2013 Pfister made his debut film as a director with Transcendence . The science fiction film was released in April 2014. Pfister's longtime collaborator Nolan acted as executive producer on his debut.

Wally Pfister has been married to Anna Julien since 1992, their daughter Claire Julien is an actress.
