action

The scientist Dr. Will Caster works with his wife Evelyn in the field of technological singularity . He is a luminary in the field of artificial intelligence and a scientist motivated by curiosity about the nature of the universe. He is working with other experts on a sensitive, thought-enabled computer system whose complex interconnections function like a human brain. He is supported by his wife, whom he loves deeply. He builds a Faraday cage around their garden with copper wire netting , so that it is protected against electromagnetic radiation and forms a space free of electrosmog .

In a lecture he predicts that a computer equipped with AI will create a technological singularity or - as he calls it - a " transcendence ". But after the lecture, a group of fanatical, militant technology skeptics and progress critics, the "Revolutionary Independence from Technology" (RIFT), carried out several attacks on important AI research laboratories and leading scientists who were killed in the process. Will is also shot down with a pistol. At first it looks as if he was only slightly injured, but then it is discovered that the ball was contaminated with radioactive polonium , which will inevitably lead to death from radiation sickness . The doctor predicts his death in four weeks.

Before his death, a researcher sent the FBI , which is cooperating with Will, documents about a new method that AI can use to obtain emotions. No virtual brain is developed, but the brain content of an existing living being - in the experiments a monkey - is copied.

In desperation, Evelyn comes the idea Wills confidence in the authorities responsible for the simulation of quantum computer research facility PINN (Physically Independent Neural Network) to upload , the project has developed. His best friend Max Waters, also a researcher, is skeptical. Evelyn can persuade him, and together they create an apparatus into which they copy Will's mental content. After Will's body dies, his mind awakens in the computer and after a short conversation demands a stable internet connection, more computing power, more storage capacity and access to the Wall Street databases . Max tries to make Evelyn understand that they don't know what they are dealing with. He doubts that this machine is a 100% copy of Will's consciousness and is vehemently against supporting the machine. Evelyn, on the other hand, forces Max to leave the building and connects the computer intelligence to the Internet via satellite.

Max is then contacted by Bree, the leader of the RIFT group. When he refuses to cooperate, he is captured by the organization. Eventually, Bree can persuade him to join them.

In his virtual form, Will generates a million dollar fortune within a day through stock market transactions. Evelyn uses it to buy all of the land and houses in a remote, rundown desert town called Brightwood. Here, with the help of his intelligence, which has grown due to his greater performance, Will creates an underground high-tech center with a solar farm above within two years , in which he drives and successfully completes the development of groundbreaking technologies in the fields of medicine, energy generation, biology and nanotechnology. Will helps some people to cure their diseases and disabilities with the help of nanorobots . He gives a blind person his eyesight back and heals the wounds of a seriously injured person within seconds. The nanorobots that carry out the healing remain in the patient, who he can control remotely or speak to Evelyn through them. Evelyn gets scared when she sees this.

Meanwhile, FBI agent Donald Buchanan, with the help of the government and scientist Joseph Tagger, is preparing to stop the spread of the technological singularity. Max develops a virus that is supposed to kill Will. The necessary side effect would be to destroy all computer systems worldwide because Will copied himself onto all computers in the world. Joseph persuades Evelyn to leave Will. She lets Max inject her with the virus and wants Will to upload her to her computer in order to spread the virus.

When Evelyn returns to Will, she is greeted by the organic body he has created. He realizes that she wants to destroy him. The FBI and RIFT activists attack the base with mortars , leaving Evelyn seriously injured. Will has the choice of either saving her body or loading her mind into the computer just like his, which would infect him with the virus, or continue with his plan. He opts for the former and thus becomes infected. The virus now attacks both him and Evelyn's cells . Will reveals to Evelyn that he did all this just for her: Evelyn's vision was to save the planet and to explore the mysteries of the universe. Will wanted to do this with nanoparticles that are already in the process of spreading all over the world. It becomes clear that the attackers were wrong in their assumption that Will wanted to rise to rulership of the world. Then the virus kills both Will and Evelyn, and global technological collapse ensues as all computers in the world are destroyed by the virus. In addition, all nanoparticles that were supposed to clean the water and the air and allow forests to grow back are destroyed.

Three years later, in Will and Evelyn's garden in their old Berkeley home, Max notices that the sunflowers are the only flowering plants in it. On closer inspection, he notices that a drop of water falling from a petal immediately cleanses a puddle of oil. He realizes that the Faraday cage also protected a sample of Will's nanorobots.
