IndieWire was founded on July 15, 1996 and was originally designed as an online forum and newsletter. IndieWire was initiated by New York and Los Angeles-based filmmakers and writers Eugene Hernandez, Karol Martesko-Fenster , Mark Rabinowitz, and Cheri Barner, back then as a free daily email.

The film website deals with independent films and offers not only news but also information for the makers of independent films, but also film reviews for cinema-goers.

In July 2008 the website was taken over by Snagfilms. IndieWire has been a subsidiary of Penske Media since January 2016 .

The company employs approximately 20 people, including publisher James Israel, editor-in-chief Dana Harris-Bridson, editor-in-chief Anne Thompson and chief critic Eric Kohn . Other film critics who regularly work for IndieWire include Ben Travers, Boyd van Hoeij , David Ehrlich, Jude Dry, Kate Erbland, Michael Nordine, Neil Young, Steve Greene, Todd McCarthy and Zack Sharf.

IndieWire Critics Poll

Since 2006, IndieWire has published an annual survey of films among critics. The result of the IndieWire Critics Poll is a ranking of 10 films in 15 different categories. In addition to US and international films, the performance of filmmakers and actors is also assessed. The order is determined by counting the votes.

The results of the survey will be published in December. The first places in the IndieWire Critics Poll were the film Parasite by Bong Joon-ho in 2019 , Roma by Alfonso Cuarón the year before and Get Out by Jordan Peele in 2017 .
