Kate Rooney Mara (born February 27, 1983 in Bedford , Westchester County , New York ) is an American actress .

life and career

Mara is the daughter of Timothy Christopher Mara, a scout for the New York Giants , and Kathleen McNulty. She is of Italian and Irish descent. She has an older brother named Daniel and two younger siblings, brother Conor and sister Rooney Mara , who is also an actress. Mara began performing in musical and theatrical productions at her school at the age of nine , and later went on to act professionally.

After Mara left the stage, she played her first role in front of the camera in 1997 on the series Law & Order . In 1999 she made her first film with Joe the King . In 2003 she was in four episodes of the television series Nip / Tuck - Beauty Has Its Price . In 2005 she played the lead role in the horror film Dark Legends 3 and had a supporting role in the drama Brokeback Mountain . She also had a guest role in five episodes of Series 24 . She gained greater fame in 2007 for her roles in the films They Were Heroes and Shooters . In the sixth season of the HBO series Entourage , she starred in four episodes in 2009 as Brittany. In 2010 she made a cameo in the comic book version Iron Man 2 . That same year she directed the biographical drama 127 Hours, directed by Danny Boyle . A year later she took on the role of Hayden McClaine in the horror series American Horror Story . From 2013 to 2016 she starred as Zoe Barnes in the House of Cards series.

She currently lives in Los Angeles , California or New York City . Mara has been married to her fellow actor Jamie Bell since July 2017 . In 2019 the two parents had a daughter.

Mara is vegan for reasons of environmental protection and health. For ethical reasons and reasons of animal welfare, she does not use any leather products.
