action

Lucy Moro and her older sister Martha from Ohio regularly drive around the United States in a motor home with their 10-year-old brother Benjamin . Together with other demonstrators, they protest against the execution of the death penalty in front of prisons. Proponents of the death penalty also gather in front of the prisons. During a demonstration in Illinois , Lucy noticed a woman of about the same age who was on the side of the supporters and kept looking over at her. When Lucy is standing in front of her mobile home and smoking that evening, the woman comes up to her. She introduces herself as Mercy Bromage. Although Lucy is rather dismissive and sarcastic , Mercy is kind to her. The next day the two women meet again. Despite their completely different political views, a friendship seems to be slowly developing between the two. Due to their different places of residence, they will from now on stay in contact by telephone and Skype calls. This also shows that the two come from opposing backgrounds: Lucy's family is liberal and doesn't have a lot of money, while Mercy comes from a conservative , affluent family and works as a lawyer .

After a protest, the two go to a bar together, where Mercy explains her reasons for her political views: her father is a police officer ; his partner, who was friends with her family, was shot dead by a mentally disabled man. Therefore, she is glad that the perpetrator is now dead and believes that the death penalty brings justice to the bereaved of the victims. Shortly afterwards, Mercy and Lucy are out for a walk when Mercy asks Lucy about her family. Lucy tearfully admits that eight years ago she found her mother stabbed to death in the living room. Her father Simon was convicted of the murder and has been waiting for his execution ever since, although he always protested his innocence. When Mercy comforts Lucy, the two get closer for the first time. A few days later, this time the two of them drive in Lucy's trailer for a protest in Missouri . During a stopover, the two sleep together for the first time. Their relationship persists, although they often quarrel over their political differences.

Meanwhile, Martha tries desperately to prove her father's innocence. Despite her lack of financial resources, she manages to hire a somewhat shady lawyer. He is said to have the impending execution postponed up to a period of four months and to look for legal loopholes or new, previously unknown information that could relieve Simon. When her last application is rejected and all the evidence still points to Simon as the perpetrator, Martha is nevertheless convinced of her father's innocence, while Lucy is not sure. She goes to Illinois to visit Mercy because she thinks she could help Simon because of her job as a lawyer. At her home it turns out that Mercy still lives with her parents; besides, she already has a boyfriend, which she has kept from Lucy. After an unpleasant encounter with Mercy's family, Lucy argues violently with her, ends their relationship and leaves the house angrily.

A little later, Martha and Lucy receive the date for Simon's execution. They meet Mercy in front of the prison. Lucy asks her to witness the venom injection , which she does. Six months later, Lucy now lives with her siblings in California , where she works as a waitress in a restaurant. One day she runs into Mercy during her lunch break. She wants to kiss her, but Lucy withdraws and claims that she cannot simply become part of her life again. When Mercy asks her to meet, Lucy agrees anyway.
