We Are Marshall (We Are Marshall) is an American sports drama from the year 2006 . Directed by McG , the script was written by Jamie Linden . The film is loosely based on a true story.

action

On November 14, 1970, the Marshall University football team ( Thundering Herd ) lost to the college team from Greenville, North Carolina . Rick Tolley, the trainer of Thundering Herd , praised the team for their commitment, but warned: "Winning is everything" . While the band, the cheerleaders and the team's assistant coach , William "Red" Dawson, drive home by bus or car, the plane crashes with the players, coaches, officials and press representatives of the football team on the flight home near Huntington ( West Virginia ). There are no survivors, which is a huge shock to the small town.

The late quarterback's father, local steel mill owner Paul Griffen, who has a huge influence on the city's citizens, sees no point in creating a new team for the coming season. The loss of his son and the other sons of the city hurts too much. However, the surviving players protest together with the students and local residents and want a new football team to be set up. Annie Cantrell, who is engaged to Griffen's deceased son, struggles with her grief and wants to give Griffen the engagement ring, a family heirloom of the Griffens. Griffen refuses, however. After successfully recruiting a new team, the rector of the university, Donald Dedmon, is charged with putting together a new team. After a desperate search for a trainer, in which the suitable candidates refused in a row, the coach Jack Lengyel from Wooster ( Ohio ) signs up for the position of the new trainer. Together with the somewhat helpless rector, he fights against all odds and sets up a colorful team that plays for the honor of the teammates who have died. He also wins Red Dawson back as an assistant coach , who wanted to turn away from the sport after the disaster. Marshall University receives special approval from the NCAA and is allowed to play with so-called freshmen (first-year students). A team of basketball players, soccer players, baseball players, and other athletes is put together that fails miserably in the first game.

Rector Donald Dedmon is dismissed and the assistant coach thinks that a failing team does not honor the dead, but brings them to shame. Trainer Lengyel gives a fiery speech at the community cemetery, where all 75 dead from the flight Southern Airways 932 lie, that the new team must rise from the ashes of the past. The team then succeeded in winning their first official home game after the accident. It should be the only one of the season. Cheerleader Annie Cantrell leaves town after delivering the engagement ring to Paul Griffen. As announced, Red Dawson is ending his football coaching career after one season.

The credits report on the further lives of some real players and people. The Thundering Herd still needs years to achieve competitive form and win individual games and a championship.

background

The film was in Atlanta , in Huntington ( West Virginia ) and in Kenova turned (West Virginia). The shooting took place among other things in April 2006. The budget of the film was estimated at 65 million US dollar . The film celebrated its world premiere on December 12, 2006 in Huntington , USA , one of the locations. Two days later the film was shown in Hollywood . In both cases, the usual red carpet was replaced by a green carpet in the shade of Marshall University . The Huntington premiere was attended by coaches Jack Lengyel and Red Dawson . On December 22, 2006 the film ran in US cinemas. On the opening weekend, the film grossed over $ 8.5 million in the United States. Overall, US revenue was over $ 43.5 million. In Germany, the film was released on DVD on September 21, 2007 .

The English-language original title of the film We are Marshall is based on a fan chant by fans of the football team, which can be heard several times in the film.

The Southern Airways Flight 932 was a charter flight of the Southern Airways with a Douglas DC-9 . The flight took off from Kinston Airport in Kinston, North Carolina , destined for Tri-State Airport in Ceredo, West Virginia . On board were 37 football players from Marshall University along with their five coaches, two athletic coaches and the sports director. They were also accompanied by 25 fans, including some prominent residents of the city such as a city council, a representative of the legislature and four of the city's six doctors. They accompanied the team to the away game on board the machine, as it was the team's only charter flight this season. The crew of the aircraft consisted of four people who were accompanied by an employee of the charter company. On November 14, 1970, at 7:35 p.m., the plane crashed into a hill near the destination airport. All 75 people on board were killed. 70 children lost a parent in the crash, and another 18 children were orphaned. The National Transportation Safety Board report was published on April 14, 1972. This shows that the cause of the crash was that the descent under difficult flight conditions led to the minimum descent altitude without visual contact with the runway. The most likely explanations for the crash are assumed to be an incorrect assessment of the data provided by the instruments in the cockpit or an error in the height measurement.

The Marshall team's plane crash was followed six weeks apart by a similar crash of one of two planes chartered by the Wichita State University football team . This machine had the head coach, other team members, university employees and several supporters on board. The plane crashed into the flank of a mountain in Colorado on its way to a game in Logan . 31 people were killed in the crash, about half of whom were gamers. Eight of the passengers as well as the copilot survived the crash. The surviving team members, as well as some players from the first semester, decided to continue playing for the rest of the season.

The film that is paused in the cinema to announce the news of the football team's plane crash is the 1970 film Shock Troop Gold .

During a training session, Lengyel explains to a tall player that he can defend himself against an attack by a small player on his legs or knees by hitting the attacking player's helmet. In the mid-1970s, both the NCAA and the NFL banned strikes on the helmet because they were associated with a high health risk.

The film contains several cameos . Sonny Perdue , the governor of Georgia , is seen as the head coach of the East Carolina University football team . Marshall University coach Red Dawson appeared in the role of Morehead State University football coach . Dave Walsh , who was quarterback for the Marshall football team in 1971 , appears in the film as an assistant to the Xaviers. Its head coach played Dorsey Levens , who previously worked as a running back for the Green Bay Packers . However, this occupation is an anachronism , because the first African-American was appointed head coach in 1979. The trainer Jack Lengyel can also be seen. Keith Morehouse , director of Huntington's WSAZ-TV, followed in the footsteps of his father, Gene Morehouse , who was a stadium announcer and who was killed in the crash. Kim Wolfe , the incumbent mayor at the time of shooting, can be seen as a police officer in the scene in which the crash site is searched for survivors.

Reviews

Kirk Honeycutt wrote in The Hollywood Reporter on December 14, 2006 that the film should have been "an inspiring story of steadfastness and courage in the face of tragedy," but that it was a collection of sports stereotypes. The characters based on real people would appear "thinly motivated". The focus is set incorrectly - scene by scene. McConaughey looks in the inappropriate clothing of the 1970s and with sideburns, as if he was playing in a comedy. The game scenes wouldn't keep up with those of the other movies like Every Damn Sunday .

Brian Lowry wrote in Variety magazine on December 18, 2006 that the true story told was "more powerful" and "compelling" than the film itself. Matthew McConaughey sounds too much like a used car dealer. Director McG tends to use football clichés again and again in this film. ("McG keeps veering toward football cliches").

The lexicon of international films wrote: "The disappointing sports film first tries to sound out the emotional state of the affected community, but then to fulfill all the clichés of the genre about should."

Awards

The film was nominated for the Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Award in 2007 for Best Sports Film.
