Red carpet

Photographers wait for celebrities on the red carpet

A red carpet is usually a long rolled out carpet on which celebrities ( stars , heads of state, etc.) walk. Red carpets are often rolled out for special occasions and receptions in front of the entrance, on stairs, but also at the airport. They are designed to express the importance of the people who walk over them.

A scene in the Agamemnon of Aeschylus contains an early mention of a red carpet: Clytaimnestra has her husband Agamemnon spread a purple carpet on his return from Troy , his feet should not touch the earth. However, Agamemnon initially refuses to walk on the carpet, pointing out that a red carpet would belong to the gods. By pointing out that Priam was not afraid to step on the carpet, Agamemnon can finally be convinced. Before stepping on the carpet, however, he has his shoes removed so as not to anger the gods even more.
