Iron Man 2 ( American pronunciation: [ 'aɪɘrnˌmæn ] British pronunciation: [ ' aɪɘnˌmæn ]) is an American action and science fiction - feature film from the year 2010 , the sequel to the film Iron Man is from 2008 and how this exactly a comic book adaptation is based on the superheroes - cartoon character Iron Man of the publishing house Marvel based. Jon Favreau was again directing and Robert Downey Jr. again played the lead role. Paramount Pictures was responsible for distribution in the USA and Concorde in Germany.

Just like the previous film, Iron Man 2 was self-financed by the Marvel Studios production company, which belongs to Marvel , and is part of a coherent universe, the " Marvel Cinematic Universe ". On May 1, 2013, the sequel, Iron Man 3 , was released in German cinemas.

The reviews of Iron Man 2 were a little more restrained than in the case of the first part, but lead actor Robert Downey Jr. again received a lot of praise. The film grossed over $ 623 million at box offices worldwide, won a Hollywood Award, a People's Choice Award , and was nominated for an Oscar in a minor category.

action

Leading actor Robert Downey Jr. at Edwards Air Force Base in May 2009 .
Gwyneth Paltrow can be seen again as "Pepper" Potts.

The dying Russian scientist Anton Vanko follows in Moscow how Tony Stark reveals at a press conference that he is Iron Man himself (seen at the end of the first part). In his last words, Vanko reveals to his son Ivan, who is also a physicist, that Stark's fame should have been his. Ivan discovers in his estate plans for the original Arc reactor (translated as “ARK reactor” in the first part), which Anton had developed together with Tony's father Howard Stark. Based on the plans, Ivan develops his own scaled-down arc reactor and plasma whips that are powered by the reactor.

Six months later, Tony Stark opened a new edition of the “Stark Expo” that his father had initiated. Behind his typically self-centered facade he hides health problems, as the palladium of the arc reactor in his chest, which keeps him alive, slowly poisons his blood. The artificial intelligence Jarvis is also unable to find a suitable replacement for the palladium. Tony even keeps his health a secret from his personal assistant "Pepper" Potts. He is also facing problems from other quarters, as the US Senate is demanding that he make Iron Man technology available to the military. His greatest critic, Senator Stern, hears arms manufacturer Justin Hammer, who is now the new main supplier to the US military after Stark Industries withdrew from the arms business, and Tony's friend, Lt. Col. James Rhodes, as a witness to question Tony's suitability as a stand-alone U.S. defense lawyer from threats. At Stern's insistence, Rhodes is taking satellite images of hostile states where, in his opinion, attempts are also being made to design an "Ironman suit". In return, Tony shows the Senate footage that shows that all attempts to replicate Iron Man's armor - in addition to Iran and North Korea also by Hammer Industries - are not even close to being successful. Tony confidently announces that he has successfully " privatized " world peace .

Due to his increasing health problems and because he no longer wants to struggle with the day-to-day business as head of Stark Industries, Tony decides to hand over the management to Pepper. On a whim, he appoints Natalie Rushman, a notary who works for Stark Industries' legal department, as his new assistant. During a visit to the Historic Grand Prix of Monaco , Tony decides to take part in the race himself as a driver. Ivan Vanko, who went to the race track disguised as a marshal, attacks the participants with his plasma whips, including Tony. After Pepper and Tony's chauffeur and bodyguard "Happy" Hogan rush to the aid and bring him the suitcase with his compact Iron Man armor, Tony wins after a strenuous fight and makes Ivan's arc reactor harmless.

When Tony visits Ivan in prison, he not only learns from him that their fathers knew each other and that Ivan regards the Starks as thieves, but also that Ivan knows about his health problems. While Tony returns to the United States, Justin Hammer frees Ivan from jail, making it appear as if Ivan was killed in an explosion. Hammer proposes to Ivan to improve the combat armor he has developed so that they can jointly expose Tony Stark to the public and the US government. Meanwhile, Tony finds out that Anton Vanko, who once fled the Soviet Union to the United States, and his own father Howard were colleagues until Vanko, who was actually pursuing his own financial interests, was deported.

Confident that he won't live much longer, Tony celebrates a big birthday party at which he, heavily drunk, does a lot of nonsense in his Iron Man armor. Rhodes, who is no longer willing to watch his friend's self-destructive behavior, puts on Tony's old "Mark II" armor and confronts Tony. After a fight that severely damaged Tony's property, Rhodes flies away in armor and hands her over to the US military, who then assigns Hammer to re-arm the armor.

Meanwhile, Nick Fury, the head of the SHIELD secret service , visits the hungover Stark to recruit him for a planned superhero team. To his surprise, Tony learns that Natalie Rushman's real name is Natasha Romanoff and that SHIELD smuggled into Stark Industries to monitor him. Romanoff injects Tony with a drug that temporarily suppresses the symptoms of his progressive palladium poisoning. In order to find a cure for his state of health, Fury puts Stark under house arrest and gives him various documents from his father, including test recordings of the official presentation film of the Stark Expo 1974. Tony, who until then had only known his deceased father as an unapproachable, cold-hearted person, finds a message addressed to him among the film recordings in which Howard describes his son as his "greatest creation" and calls on Tony to complete the work he has begun.

After a failed attempt to apologize to Pepper and tell her the truth about his health, Tony accidentally discovers the model of the site of the 1974 Expo. Back in his workshop, he has Jarvis make a holographic copy. Eventually he realizes that this is a hidden message, the model of a new element . After setting up a “prism accelerator” (similar to a particle accelerator ) in his workshop , he succeeds in synthesizing the element. Shortly after, however, he receives a call from Ivan letting Tony know that he is still alive and that he is planning some sensational action. Tony realizes that this is probably related to Justin Hammer's upcoming appearance at the Stark Expo. Without testing the new element beforehand, Tony inserts it into his arc reactor and goes to the expo in a new armor.

Meanwhile, Hammer presents the combat armor that Ivan has converted into remote-controlled drones , the "hammer drones", as well as their leader, James Rhodes, in his converted armor. When Tony arrives and asks Rhodes to help evacuate the crowd, Vanko takes control of the drones and Rhodes' armor, attacking Tony and the visitors. While Tony is luring his opponents away from the audience, Agent Romanoff Hammer extracts the information that Vanko is in his factory. Romanoff goes there with Happy Hogan and turns off the security guards, but realizes that Vanko has disappeared. In return, she manages to restart Rhodes' armor so that he can regain control and help Tony fight the drones.

After they have destroyed the drones, Vanko confronts them in another armor equipped with improved plasma whips. They manage to defeat Vanko and incapacitate his armor. Vanko then triggers a self-destruct mechanism that blows up his own armor and the drones. Tony and Rhodes flee, and at the last second Tony saves Pepper from an exploding drone.

Tired of the constant stress, Pepper decides to step down from her position as Managing Director of Stark Industries. She and Tony kiss, and Rhodes flies away in his armor without Tony trying to stop him.

Some time later, Nick Fury presented Tony with Agent Romanoff's final assessment of his suitability as a member of the Avengers Initiative. While she classifies Iron Man as fit, Tony Stark is considered unsuitable because of his personality. Instead, Fury offers him a position as a consultant. In return, Tony asks a favor, which Fury promptly fulfills: When Tony and Rhodes are awarded an order, Tony's greatest critic, Senator Stern, is responsible for carrying out the award.

In the post-credit scene , SHIELD agent Phil Coulson, previously withdrawn from monitoring Tony's house arrest, arrives at the Thor hammer site in the New Mexico desert .

Important figures

Mickey Rourke was director Jon Favreau's preferred candidate for the role of Ivan Vanko.
Scarlett Johansson plays Natasha Romanoff aka "Natalie Rushman".
Clark Gregg re-plays the role of SHIELD agent Phil Coulson.
Garry Shandling plays Senator Stern, who has no role model in the comics.
Paul Bettany lends his voice to Jarvis in the original version.

Iron Man / Anthony "Tony" Stark ( Robert Downey Jr. ) is the son of industrialist Howard Stark and has been the managing director of Stark Industries since his father's death. Tony has been an ingenious inventor since he was a child and, as an adult, has the reputation of a risk-taking playboy . One of the basic ideas behind the portrayal of the role is that of a "modern Howard Hughes ". In the film Iron Man , Tony was attacked and seriously injured by terrorists following a weapons display in Afghanistan . To save his life, an electromagnet was implanted in his chest. Tony then replaced the magnet with a miniature version of the arc reactor he developed. After his escape, he retired from the arms business and developed high-tech armaments powered by the reactor in his chest. The media gave the armored superhero the name "Iron Man" (German: "Eisenmann"), and at a press conference Tony confessed to the public that he was Iron Man himself. In Iron Man 2 , however, Tony realizes that the palladium , one of the main components of the Arc reactor, is slowly poisoning his blood. In the certainty that he will not live much longer, he behaves increasingly self-destructive and even transfers the management of Stark Industries to his personal assistant, "Pepper" Potts. Meanwhile, he refuses to ask the US Senate to make the technology underlying his Iron Man armor available to the military. Ultimately, however, Tony succeeds in synthesizing a new element that is an effective substitute for the palladium and thus puts an end to Tony's health problems.

Iron Man's three new armor can be seen in the film: "Mark IV" is the armor that Tony wears at the "Stark Expo " and which he later wears at his birthday party, "Mark V" is special armor for emergency purposes that can be transformed into a large " briefcase " for transport purposes and is used in the fight against Ivan Vanko in Monaco , and "Mark VI" is the armor that Tony develops at the end of the film and is used in the fight against the "hammer drones" and Vanko uses. While the “Mark IV” armor hardly differs from its predecessor, “Mark III” from Iron Man , the “Mark V” armor is painted in red and silver shades. The biggest change to the "Mark VI" armor is the triangular shape of the repulsor transmitter on the chest, which changes the round, palladium-based core of the arc reactor into the new, triangular core, which consists of the newly discovered element , clarified. The “Mark I”, “Mark II” and “Mark III” armor from Iron Man can also be seen in the film in Tony's workshop, and James Rhodes finally hands the “Mark II” armor over to the US military, the they can be converted.

Ivan Vanko / "Whiplash" ( Mickey Rourke ) is the son of the Russian scientist Anton Vanko, who once developed the arc reactor together with Tony's father Howard. Since Anton, who fled the Soviet Union to the USA, had pursued his own financial interests, Howard reported him to the authorities, who deported him again. The Soviet leadership then had Anton deported to Siberia , where his son Ivan was finally born. Ivan became a physicist himself, but after selling nuclear secrets to Pakistan , he too ended up in jail. After his father's death, Ivan discovers the plans for the original Arc reactor in his estate. He immediately begins to build his own scaled-down version and also develops two plasma whips powered by the reactor. With the whips he attacks Tony Stark in Monaco, but loses after a short fight. Tony's rival Justin Hammer frees Vanko from prison in order to improve the armor Hammer developed. Vanko turns the armor into drones , which he controls remotely and, at the official presentation, causes them to attack Tony and the audience. After Tony and Rhodes have defeated the drones, Ivan confronts them in his own armor including improved plasma whips. With combined forces, however, the two manage to defeat Ivan and make his armor incapable of fighting, whereupon he activates a self-destruct mechanism that causes the armor to explode.

Lt. Col. James "Rhodey" Rhodes ( Don Cheadle ) is in the service of the US Air Force and is a personal friend of Tony Stark. In Iron Man 2 , he has to mediate between Tony and his superiors, who would like it if Tony would make the technology underlying his armor available to the military. When Tony endangers the partygoers drunk in his armor at his birthday party, Rhodes puts on Tony's old "Mark II" armor to bring his friend to his senses. Then he takes the armor and hands it over to the military, who have it converted. However, when he presents the armor at the Stark Expo, Vanko brings it under his control and forces Rhodes to fight Tony until SHIELD agent Natasha Romanoff succeeds in restarting the armor's systems. Rhodes then helps Tony fight Vanko.

Virginia "Pepper" Potts ( Gwyneth Paltrow ) is Tony Stark's personal assistant and close confidante. In Iron Man 2 , Tony names her as the new managing director of Stark Industries. While Pepper tries to run the company, Tony annoys her with his increasingly self-destructive behavior. After he rescued her as Iron Man from an exploding "hammer drone" and she found out that Tony almost died of palladium poisoning, she resigns as managing director, whereupon she and Tony kiss.

Justin Hammer ( Sam Rockwell ) heads Hammer Industries and is Tony's direct competitor and personal rival. One of the basic ideas behind the character is that of a "second rate Tony Starks". The relationship between the two is based on the relationship between Bugs Bunny (Stark) and Daffy Duck (Hammer). After Tony's withdrawal from the arms business, Hammer became the new main supplier to the US military. Hammer frees Vanko from prison so that he can improve his armor. When he realizes that he cannot control Vanko, he tries to put Vanko under pressure. Instead, Vanko takes control of the drones when they are presented at Stark Expo and makes them attack Iron Man and the spectators. While Iron Man fights the drones, SHIELD agent Natasha Romanoff gets Hammer to admit that he is working with Vanko. Pepper Potts then informed the police, who arrested Hammer.

Natasha Romanoff ( Scarlett Johansson ) is a SHIELD secret service agent who was smuggled into Stark Industries under the code name Natalie Rushman to monitor Tony. At the beginning of the film, she works as a notary in the company's legal department until Tony appoints her as his new personal assistant. Pepper Potts is then initially jealous of her and even suspects her to be responsible for Tony's increasingly self-destructive behavior. After Tony learns that Natasha is working for SHIELD, he taunts her in Pepper's presence, but is surprised to find that she and Pepper have gotten along well. When Vanko chases the "hammer drones" on Iron Man, Natasha coaxes Justin Hammer from Vanko's whereabouts and goes to Hammer's factory with Tony's chauffeur and bodyguard, "Happy" Hogan. After overpowering the guards, she breaks into Vanko's lab and uses his computer to reboot the systems on Jim Rhodes' armor so he can help Tony fight the drones.

Jarvis (voice of Paul Bettany ) is an artificial intelligence that controls all systems in Tony Stark's house and workshop and often speaks with a sarcastic undertone when interacting with Tony. Jarvis is also responsible for developing and controlling Tony's Iron Man armor.

Howard Stark ( John Slattery ) is Tony's father, who died 20 years ago and was not only involved in the Manhattan Project , but was also a founding member of the SHIELD secret service. In addition, he once developed the original arc reactor with Ivan Vanko's father Anton. At the beginning of Iron Man 2 , Howard can be seen in a presentation film that he once shot for the Stark Expo in 1974. Tony later receives several film roles from SHIELD, on which not only are screenings of the presentation film, but also a personal message to Tony. To Tony's great surprise, his father, whom he had only known as an unapproachable, cold-hearted person, proudly describes his son as his "greatest creation" and asks him to complete his work. Ultimately, Tony realizes that Howard had hidden in the model of the site of the 1974 Expo the plan for a new element that he had not been able to manufacture himself due to the comparatively limited technology of his own time. In addition to Howard Hughes, who was also one of the most important inspirations for Tony Stark, Howard Stark's appearance in the film should be reminiscent of Walt Disney .

Nick Fury ( Samuel L. Jackson ) is the director of the SHIELD secret service. At the end of Iron Man , he visited Tony in his house and made him the proposal to join a planned team of superheroes . In Iron Man 2 , he visits Tony when he is suffering from a bad hangover the day after his birthday party and reveals to him that his new personal assistant, "Natalie Rushman", is actually working for SHIELD. Fury places Stark under house arrest and instructs him to find a solution to his health problems. To help him with this, he gives Tony personal records from his father, Howard, who was a founding member of SHIELD.

Phil Coulson ( Clark Gregg ) is also a SHIELD agent and is assigned to monitor Tony's house arrest. Nevertheless, Tony manages to temporarily leave his property and visit Pepper Potts at the corporate headquarters of Stark Industries, which Coulson only finds out after Tony returns. While Tony is setting up a “prism accelerator” in his workshop, which is supposed to enable him to synthesize a new element, Coulson says goodbye to Tony with the information that he has been assigned to a new mission in New Mexico . There he finally arrives at the site of Thor's hammer in a scene after the credits .

Senator Stern ( Garry Shandling ) is one of Tony's greatest critics and calls on him to make the technology underlying his Iron Man armor available to the US military. However, during his Senate hearing, Tony manages to dismiss all of Stern's criticisms. At the end of the film, at Tony's request, SHIELD gets Stern to personally award a medal to Rhodes and Tony.

"Happy" Hogan ( Jon Favreau ) is a retired boxer and the chauffeur and bodyguard Tony Stark. In Iron Man 2 in Monaco he carries the “briefcase” in which Tony's “Mark V” armor is hidden with him and brings it to his employer when he is attacked by Ivan Vanko on the racetrack. Later he and Natasha Romanoff break into the Hammer Industries factory where they suspect Vanko is. While Happy knocks a security guard to the ground with great difficulty, Natasha manages to overwhelm the rest of the security team.

production

Emergence

Don Cheadle replaces Terrence Howard as James Rhodes.
Director Jon Favreau, cast of "Happy" Hogan, May 2009 at Edwards Air Force Base .
The Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in New York district of Queens has been in the film alignment location of the "Stark Expo", filmed there hardly.
Even Monaco , however, was one of the scenes of the film, also shot there only with the second unit .
Elon Musk makes a brief appearance in the film and in return provided the film team with the SpaceX factory for filming.
Adam Goldstein aka "DJ AM" did not live to see the release of the film in which he can be seen.
Even Christiane Amanpour is seen briefly in the film.

Director Jon Favreau had already planned a trilogy during the planning phase of Iron Man . Originally , the character of Obadiah Stane, embodied by Jeff Bridges , should only have turned out to be a villain in the course of the first film and should become "Iron Monger" in the second part. However, when the originally called rogue planned for the first part, "Mandarin" on the advice of the Marvel -Autoren Mark Millar was deleted from the script, it was decided to make Stane in the first part of the main opponents. In July 2008, two months after Iron Man was released , Justin Theroux was confirmed as the screenwriter of the sequel. In October 2008 it was announced that Terrence Howard , who had played the character of Jim Rhodes in Iron Man , would be replaced by Don Cheadle for Iron Man 2 . The possible reason given is that Howard received a higher fee for Iron Man than Robert Downey Jr. , Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow . In addition, there should have been conflicts between Howard and the other participants on the set of Iron Man . In the film, Tony's brief exchange with Rhodes when he appears in the Senate is supposed to be an allusion to the change in the cast.

Favreau names the word “legacy” as one of the central themes of the film. While Tony is faced with his father's legacy in a number of ways, he is faced with the question of what he would like to leave the world behind in the event of his death.

In an early version of the script for the second part, two Russian villains were planned. Ivan Vanko would not have survived the fight against Tony in Monaco , whereupon the other villain would have taken his place. Since director Jon Favreau would have liked to cast Sam Rockwell , with whom he had just set the film G-Force - Agents with Bite to music, as a villain, but on the other hand did not want Rockwell to speak with a Russian accent, he decided to join the two Russians merge one character and give Rockwell the role of Justin Hammer instead. Rockwell was already a candidate for the role of Tony Stark in Iron Man at the time. In addition, Favreau did not want to overload the film with too many story threads, which is why he wanted to keep the number of Iron Man's opponents as low as possible - in retrospect, he is of the opinion that he succeeded in dividing the story onto two primary threads, the conflict between Ivan and Tony and Tony's health problems. Favreau decided to cast Mickey Rourke for Ivan Vanko after seeing The Wrestler - Fame, Love, Pain . However, since Rourke was difficult to reach in the wake of the success of the latter film, Robert Downey Jr. took on the task of asking Rourke in interviews about his possible interest in Iron Man 2 . Rourke took on the design of his appearance as Ivan Vanko down to the smallest detail. In preparation for his role, he also visited the Butyrka prison and took language lessons. Rourke's commitment was officially confirmed in March 2009. At almost the same time, Scarlett Johansson was also confirmed for the film. Originally, Emily Blunt was cast in the role of Natasha Romanoff, but because, due to the filming of Gulliver's Travels - Because something big comes up to us no longer was available, it was replaced by Johansson. Samuel L. Jackson initially refused to play the role of Nick Fury again because of the originally offered fee until Marvel increased the offer and offered him a contract for a total of nine films.

In an earlier draft of the script was planned to start the film with another scene in which Tony Stark on board the aircraft, which brings him to the Stark Expo, apparently airsick is. After throwing up in the toilet on board, he asks Pepper to kiss him goodbye. Instead, Pepper kisses his helmet and then throws it off the plane, and Tony jumps after it. Instead, in the finished film, Tony jumps off the plane in full armor and Pepper cannot be seen. According to director Jon Favreau, the scene was not used because at this point it would not have matched the mood at the beginning of the film. However, the end of the scene was used for the official trailer , and the full scene is included in the bonus footage of the film's DVD and Blu-ray releases.

The scene at the beginning of the film, in which Ivan Vanko is building his arc reactor and the plasma whips, is intended to be reminiscent of the scene in the first film, in which Tony develops his arc reactor and his first armor in the cave in Afghanistan. Another inspiration for this scene was the film π , on which Matthew Libatique , the cameraman for Iron Man 2 , also worked as cameraman. Tony's appearance at the opening of the Stark Expo was inspired by a visit by Jon Favreau to an AC / DC concert , which is why the band's song Shoot to Thrill can also be heard during the scene . The tuxedo that Tony wears is supposed to be reminiscent of James Bond . The scene in which Justin Hammer presents the weapons he plans to build into the armor seized by Rhodes was inspired by the film Taxi Driver , while the scene in which Tony looks at his father's footage and finally discovers the message addressed to him, is based on the orientation films of the DHARMA initiative from the television series Lost . Favreau consulted with Damon Lindelof , one of the creators and producers of Lost , who liked the idea. Genndy Tartakovsky , whose work for Samurai Jack and Star Wars: Clone Wars Favreau liked, helped in the meantime with the conception of the fight between Iron Man, Rhodes and the "hammer drones".

Favreau describes the conflict between Tony and Rhodes as a particularly difficult balancing act. On the one hand, the viewer must get the impression that Tony deserves that Rhodes remove one of his armor and hand it over to the military, on the other hand, Tony's behavior must not be too exaggerated, so that neither of them seems really unsympathetic. The scene in which Natasha Romanoff and "Happy" Hogan break into Ivan's lab and Natasha uses the computer to restart the systems on Rhodes' armor was post-written in the film and filmed after the main filming was over to show her fight against Hammer's guards not to appear completely unnecessary in view of Ivan's flight. The subsequent conversation between Tony and Pepper Potts was entirely improvised by Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Tony Stark's Senate hearing was inspired by Howard Hughes' hearing before a special committee of Congress in 1947, during which Hughes won over public opinion with self-assured demeanor and sarcasm, as well as the film Mr. Smith Goes to Washington . The scene was also the first to be shot, but it wasn't until just before the film was finished that it was shortened to its final length. In a longer version of the scene, which is included in the bonus material of the DVD and Blu-ray release of the film, SHIELD agent Phil Coulson, who is not seen for the first time in the finished film, is among the audience . The scene in which Ivan Vanko receives forged papers in a side street in Moscow in order to be able to travel to Monaco was filmed in Manhattan Beach , while the aircraft hangar in France, where Vanko first meets Justin Hammer, is actually at the airport from Van Nuys is located. Overall, with the exception of a few establishing shots , recordings with the second unit and the scene after the credits, almost all of the film was shot in California .

Flushing Meadows Park in New York City was chosen as the venue for the Stark Expo , as director Jon Favreau lived across the street with a direct view of the park as a child, but he was born in 1966, which is why he was the 1964 World's Fair / 65 had not seen it myself. The building on the roof of which Tony, Pepper and Rhodes rest at the end of the film after defeating Vanko is actually Favreau's former home. The chase between Tony, Rhodes and the "Hammer drones" was actually the second unit in the New York district of Queens rotated. Monaco was chosen as the location to be a step up from the first part, which started with Tony in Las Vegas . Jon Favreau cites the James Bond films he grew up with as inspiration. Some shots , establishing shots and background shots were actually shot on site a few days before the Historic Grand Prix was hosted with the support of Prince Albert II of Monaco and the Automobile Club de Monaco from the Second Unit . For the action scenes, on the other hand, part of the racetrack, including the grandstand in Downey , California, was recreated. Eight of the racing vehicles were provided by the Historic Grand Prix Association for the stunt scenes, and nineteen more were built as props by vehicle coordinator John Armstrong . Only two of these nineteen vehicles were actually roadworthy. Two real Rolls-Royce Phantoms were also destroyed during the shoot, which cost the film crew $ 438,000 per vehicle. For the racing scenes, the vehicles and the spectators in the stands were supplemented with computer effects.

Rhodes' landing with the confiscated armor at Edwards Air Force Base was filmed on site. As in the case of the first part, real soldiers act as extras, and this time a B-2 Spirit , an F-22 Raptor and a C-17 Globemaster III can be seen in the background . The US Department of Defense also supported the production of the film and ensured that the hymns of the respective armed forces ( Army , Air Force , Navy and Marines ) could be used for the presentation of the “hammer drones” . Another location was the Randy's Donuts food stand, where Tony Stark and Nick Fury meet the day after Tony's birthday party. The original plan was to have the scene set in an underground SHIELD bunker.

Scarlett Johansson performed many stunts himself for the fight between Natasha Romanoff and Justin Hammers security guards and trained for this purpose with her stunt double , Heidi Moneymaker. Director Jon Favreau also performed some stunts himself in his role as "Happy" Hogan.

Leslie Bibb re- stars as Christine Everhart from Iron Man , as she and Sam Rockwell were a couple at the time of shooting. This is also intended to make it clear that Rockwell's role as Justin Hammer is supposed to be a "would-be Tony Stark", since Tony and Everhart have already spent a night together. The TV presenter Olivia Munn also plays the newscaster Chess Roberts at the beginning of the film. In an originally planned scene, she should have played a guest at Tony's birthday party called "Rebeca". The scene in question is missing in the final version of the film, but is included in the bonus material of the DVD and Blu-ray releases. The DJ at the party is Adam Goldstein aka "DJ AM", who died before the film was released. There is a dedication to Goldstein in the credits of the film . Other cameo appearances include Iron Man co-creator Stan Lee , Larry Ellison , the founder and CEO of Oracle , who plays himself, and Seth Green , who can be seen for less than a second, the news anchor Christiane, who is friends with Gwyneth Paltrow Amanpour , the TV presenter Bill O'Reilly and Elon Musk , the founder and president of SpaceX , who also served as a role model for the character of Tony Stark and meets Tony in Monaco . In return for his appearance, Musk made the SpaceX factory, which is the factory of Hammer Industries in the film, available to the film crew for filming. The workers in the background are not extras, but actual factory workers, as the work could not be interrupted during the shooting.

The vehicles in Tony Stark's workshop this time include a 1949 Mercury , a 1953 Cadillac Series 62 , a collapsible ICON A5 airplane, and the 1932 Ford Model B Flathead Roadster, which was shown in Iron Man and actually belongs to director Jon Favreau. Just like the airplane, Oracle, Audi and Kodak are part of the product placement in the film and have their own exhibition halls at the Stark Expo. The Oracle Dome is the scene of the final battle between Tony, Rhodes, the "hammer drones" and Vanko. As in Iron Man , Tony drives an Audi R8 again in the second part , but this time the Spyder version. The rolls of film with the recordings of his father Howard, Tony Nick Fury gets all bear the Kodak logo, and Tony followed Ivan's call through the Oracle - Grid back.

The physical armor and Vanko's exoskeleton were built as in the first film, Legacy Effects (formerly Stan Winston Studios). This time, however, they were much easier for the actors to wear. The legs were left completely free and later supplemented with computer effects using motion capture . The exoskeleton that Ivan Vanko wears in Monaco still weighed 18 kilograms without the arms, which is why Mickey Rourke underwent a seven-week strength training session. The upper part of Rhodes' armor weighed as much as 20 kilograms. The computer effects again came from several studios: Industrial Light & Magic implemented the battles of Iron Man, War Machine and the "hammer drones" via motion capture, while Prologue was responsible for the holograms , among other things , at the New York City-based studio Perception took on the screen displays, Pixel Liberation Front from Venice animated the head-up displays in the armor's helmets, and the Australian studio Fuel VFX took on the effects for Ivan Vanko's plasma whips and Tony's “prism accelerator”, among other things. Even with the action sequences, which were created entirely on the computer, care was taken to ensure that the viewing angle was always possible with a real camera. The footage of the armaments of North Korea , Iran and Justin Hammer is vaguely based on the RoboCop character and was created by studios who wanted to apply for a role in Iron Man 2 . Favreau liked the work so much that he used it in the finished film.

This time the score was composed by John Debney , instead of Ramin Djawadi , who had already set Favreau's films Buddy - The Christmas Elf and Zathura - An Adventure in Space , and recorded in London's Abbey Road Studios . This was a conscious decision, because this time the music should sound more like in other superhero films than in the first part. The theme music of the Stark Expo of 1974, "Make Way for Tomorrow Today", was developed by Richard Sherman modeled after classic Disney - Theme park composed -Lieder. Guitarist Tom Morello , who was involved in the music for the first part, was in turn involved in the piece that can be heard when Natasha Romanoff fights against Hammer's guards.

The scene that can be seen after the credits was actually shot on the set of Thor in New Mexico and, as in the case of the scene after the credits of the first part, was missing in all press screenings of the film in order to surprise the fans.

Reference to the template

Justin Hammer, played by Sam Rockwell , is much older in the comics than in the film.
Olivia Munn has a small role as Chess Roberts, who has only appeared in the comics so far.

Tony Stark's health problems were and are repeatedly a topic in the comics. The idea that the continued use of his Iron Man armor would make him sick and ultimately kill him is loosely based on a multi-part story from 1999 in which the energy fields within the armor were the cause. The scene at Tony's birthday party in which he staggers around in a very drunk state and uses his armor as a “party toy” goes back to two longer stories that appeared in the comics in 1979 and between 1982 and 1984. In it, Tony repeatedly became an alcoholic and eventually even lost control of his company. In the run-up to Iron Man , fans had asked for Tony's alcoholism to be a topic in the film. According to director Jon Favreau , the scene in Iron Man 2 is supposed to represent the utmost that can be seen in the movies with regard to this topic.

Tony also has armor in the comics that can be transported in special briefcases. The color scheme of the “Mark V” armor is based on the armor known as the “Silver Centurion” that he wore in the comics from 1985 onwards. The same armor is the template for the triangular repulsor transmitter on the chest of the “Mark VI” armor in the film.

The role of Ivan Vanko is a combination of two classic opponents of Iron Man from the comics: While the plasma whips are based on the character of the “Whiplash”, who also used a whip as a weapon, the name goes “Vanko” and the armor he wears at the end of the film are based on the character of the original “Crimson Dynamo”, a kind of Soviet counterpart to Iron Man, whose real name was Anton Vanko (the name of Ivan's father in the film) . In the official promotional materials of the film, including the toy train Hasbro , Ivan Vanko is also called "Whiplash" means, even if the name in the film itself is not named. At the end of 2009, a few months before the film was released, a new whiplash was introduced in the comics, whose real name is also Anton Vanko and which was clearly inspired by the character in the film.

In the comics, Jim Rhodes originally represented Tony Stark, who was prevented from doing so because of his alcoholism, as Iron Man. He later received his own armor in which he called himself "War Machine". The coloring and armament of Rhodes' armor in the film are clearly based on the comic model. In the film's official promotional materials, including the Hasbros toy series, Rhodes is also referred to as the "War Machine". In the film itself, Tony only uses the name indirectly once, when he asked Rhodes during their fight "You want to be a war machine?" (In the German dubbed version translated as "You want to be a war machine?" Be a war machine? ").

Justin Hammer has been a long-time opponent of Iron Man in the comics, but he has been portrayed much older than in the film since his first comic book appearance. In the comics, he provides technological equipment to numerous super villains. in return, they agree to work for him and attack his competitors, including Tony Stark. Among the villains who worked for Hammer over the years was Whiplash.

Natasha Romanoff (actually Natalia Alianova Romanova) was originally a Soviet spy in the comics with the code name "Black Widow" (German: "Black Widow"), who had the assignment to spy on Tony Stark. Later she changed sides and became a costumed superhero as Black Widow, who worked with Daredevil and others and became a member of the Avengers , which she even led in the meantime. She also worked with the SHIELD secret service. The idea of making her a SHIELD agent right from the start, however, goes back to the comic series The Ultimate from the " Ultimate Universe ", in which she was a member of a covert operations division of the superhero team called "The Ultimate" in turn was subordinate to SHIELD. There she later emerged as a double agent who seduced Tony and betrayed her team. The name "Black Widow" is also absent from the film, but is used in the official promotional materials and by director Jon Favreau in the audio commentary on the DVD and Blu-ray releases of the film.

Tony Stark's father Howard was named after Howard Hughes , who was already one of the inspirations for the character of Tony Stark at the time. Just like in the comics, his wife is called Maria in the film. While he was killed in a car accident, according to Iron Man , he and his wife died in a plane crash in the comics.

Nick Fury is an occasional ally of the Avengers in the comics of the “classic” Marvel universe, but otherwise the team's relationship with the US government was for a long time limited to a liaison officer who was authorized to decide on team membership. The idea of making the Avengers directly into a founding of SHIELD and subordinating the Fury team to the comics, which appeared from 1996 under the heading Heroes Reborn (German title Die Wiedergeburt der Helden ) and played in another universe, introduced and later taken up again by the comics of the "Ultimate Universe", which also take place in a separate universe, the team here initially being called "The Ultimates" (German "the Ultimate").

Christine Everhart, previously featured in Iron Man , has only appeared in the comics once in a 2004 story.

With Olivia Munn role as a news anchor at the beginning of the film is Chess Roberts, who in 1998 had their first and only appearance in the comics.

The character of Senator Stern was specially invented for the film.

The longtime Marvel comic book author Stan Lee , one of the inventors of Iron Man, has a cameo as in the first part when Tony leaves the Stark Expo at the beginning of the film. If Tony mistook him for Hugh Hefner in Iron Man , this time he was mistaken for Larry King .

David Nathan lends his German voice to Sam Rockwell .

As in the case of the first part, the German synchronization of the film was carried out by Berliner Synchron AG . Almost all recurring actors have the same voice actors as in the first part, including Tobias Meister , Katrin Fröhlich , Till Hagen , Frank Schaff , Cathlen Gawlich and Engelbert von Nordhausen . Only Michael Iwannek replaces Stefan Fredrich as the German voice of Happy Hogan / Jon Favreau . Reiner Schöne , Dietmar Wunder , Luise Helm , David Nathan , Reinhard Kuhnert and Bernd Vollbrecht are new .

marketing

AC / DC are represented in the film with two songs. Other songs were used for the official trailer .
Justin Theroux not only wrote the script for the film, but also wrote a history of the film's plot that appeared as a comic .

The marketing campaign for Iron Man 2 included an appearance by director Jon Favreau and actors Robert Downey Jr. , Scarlett Johansson , Don Cheadle and Sam Rockwell at the San Diego Comic-Con International in July 2009, which also featured scenes from the film as well as a website for the fictitious "Stark Expo" and advertising contracts with Audi , LG , 7-Eleven , Dr. Pepper , Oracle and Burger King , which in turn were also included as product placement in the film. LG and Oracle advertised for and with Iron Man 2 on specially set up microsites , while Audi used scenes from the film for a commercial for the R8 Spyder . A commercial for Dr. Pepper, in which Stan Lee plays a supporting role, was also filmed on the set of Tony Stark's workshop. For the official promotional photos, the SHIELD logo was removed from Natasha Romanoff's costume by means of digital post-processing, as the corresponding twist in the film plot was supposed to be a surprise.

For the trailer , the songs Shoot to Thrill , War Machine and The Razors Edge by AC / DC and Iron Man by Black Sabbath were used. The scene in the first trailer where Pepper Potts kisses Tony's Iron Man helmet and throws it out of the plane and Tony jumps after it is part of the movie's originally planned opening scene, which was not used in the final film. There Tony just jumps out of the plane including his helmet. In the German version of the second trailer, Sam Rockwell and Gwyneth Paltrow are dubbed by Tobias Kluckert and Claudia Urbschat-Mingues instead of David Nathan and Katrin Fröhlich .

A complete soundtrack album was released in the USA on April 19th, in Germany on April 16th, 2010 and consists entirely of songs by AC / DC. In addition to Shoot to Thrill and Highway to Hell , which can be heard in the film and during the credits , the pieces War Machine and The Razors Edge used for the trailers and Back in Black , which was heard at the beginning of Iron Man , are including the songs Rock 'n' Roll Damnation , Guns for Hire , Cold Hearted Man , Thunderstruck , If You Want Blood (You've Got It) , Evil Walks , TNT , Hell Ain't a Bad Place to Be , Have a Drink on Me and Let There Be Rock . Since the management of AC / DC had previously refused a “best of” compilation of the band, the soundtrack for Iron Man 2 can be regarded as a quasi “Greatest Hits” album. The soundtrack achieved high chart positions in many countries , around fourth in the USA and first in Great Britain and Germany . The score , composed by John Debney , was released on July 20, 2010 under the title Iron Man 2: Original Motion Picture Score .

Mobile game and iPhone versions have also been developed and published by Gameloft .

Marvel released a four-part comic book miniseries from December 2009 to February 2010 entitled Iron Man vs. Whiplash , written by Brannon Braga and Marc Guggenheim and drawn by Phil Briones, who starred in the classic Marvel comic universe and introduced a new version of Whiplash based on Mickey Rourke's role in the film. The German version was published in Mail 2010 as Volume 85 of the Marvel Exklusiv series by Panini- Verlag. A three-part miniseries titled Iron Man 2: Public Identity , which was released from April to May 2010, was meanwhile played in terms of content during the six months between the two films. The writers were Joe Casey and Justin Theroux , who also wrote the script for the film, and the drawings were by Barry Kitson and Ron Lim . In German, however, the story was only published in February 2012 as an anthology under the Panini imprint "Marvel Movies".

On May 2nd, Iron Man 2 had grossed over 100 million US dollars worldwide. After the film was released in the US with almost 10,000 copies in 4,380 theaters, it already raised about 52.4 million US dollars on the launch day, which is a significant increase compared to the 35.2 million of the first part (38.7 million inclusive the preview demonstrations the day before). On the weekend launch, the film grossed $ 128.1 million, including $ 9.8 million from screenings in 181 IMAX theaters, making it the fifth-best movie release of all time at the time. After a week, the revenue was $ 159.2 million, and after 40 days, the revenue even exceeded the $ 300 million mark. Worldwide, production costs of $ 200 million were amortized after the first weekend with total revenues of $ 327 million . In the USA, Iron Man 2 took in a total of over 312.43 million US dollars after 15 weeks, making it the third most successful film of 2010 in the USA. Total worldwide box office income is over $ 623.93 million, making Iron Man 2 seventh among the world's most successful films of 2010.

In Germany, Iron Man 2 was shown in 633 cinemas on May 6, 2010, one day before its US theatrical release. On the opening weekend, the film saw 367,953 visitors, which corresponds to an increase of around 19 percent compared to the first part. With the equivalent of 3.3 million US dollars, the weekend income was slightly behind Iron Man with 3.4 million, but this was due to the increased dollar exchange rate; the gross profit in euros was higher than in the case of the first part. After a week, the number of visitors amounted to 484,021, and for one week Iron Man 2 was number one in the German cinema charts . Within five weeks, the film recorded a total of 1,013,795 visitors, which corresponds to an increase of almost 24 percent compared to the first part, and thus ranks 32nd among the most successful films of the year in Germany. The total box office income in Germany is 9.25 million US dollars.

The DVD version sold over 1.1 million copies on the first day of publication, and after a week it was as much as five million. The DVD version alone sold more than 2.68 million copies in the first week of release, for revenue of over $ 61.3 million. Current sales of the DVD version (as of March 1, 2012) are over 5.5 million copies sold and revenues of over $ 121.2 million.

Reviews

The reviews of Iron Man 2 were largely positive, but judged the film in part as a deterioration compared to the also positively received first part.

Susan Vahabzadeh from the Süddeutsche Zeitung had a largely positive opinion on the film . It is the main reason for the leading actor: “'Iron Man 2' would not work without the charm of Robert Downey Jr. He likes the characters who are overwhelmed by life and still go on - you have to love Tony Stark after a while too, when he's alone in his laboratory and secretly looking at his bursting chest, really cool, without quarreling with his fate. [...] Tony Stark is not strong, he just pulls himself together with the last of his strength. He's really just a person, a very fragile one, whom the costumes, very earthly technology, hold together, but on the other hand also slowly destroys. ”Director Jon Favreau's staging of Tony's problems was also successful:“ Favreau negotiates Tony Stark's neuroses precisely in right tone and rhythm, laconic and with gentle irony. ”In addition, the roles played by Sam Rockwell and Garry Shandling are “ two magically clumsy figures ”and the figure of Ivan Vanko“ a Rourke parade role ”. Overall, the film is "always really thrilling, sometimes funny and sometimes touching, when Favreau concentrates fully on his characters, on small details." Vahabzadeh was less enthusiastic about the action scenes: "[M] an has more of the impression that the filmmakers - Tim Burton in Alice in Wonderland , now Favreau - are doing this like a chore. "

Peter Körte from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung also considered the actors to be the film's greatest asset: "You don't have to ask about conclusiveness, but about the key characters, and when you look at the cast list, nothing can go wrong." Less told him on the other hand, the plot to: “The script, which fortunately does not attach too much importance to so-called plot points, because director Jon Favreau does not see himself as an executive engineer, lets the stars compete.” He attested Sam Rockwell to the “sleazy charm of a car salesman "While Samuel L. Jackson " sounds almost like his Ezekiel monologue in Pulp Fiction "" during Nick Fury's conversation with Tony Stark . First and foremost, however, it is the actresses who, according to Körte, were convincing: "Because Stark / Iron Man is closer to complacency than self-irony, the distance must result from the play of Gwyneth Paltrow (as Stark's confidante Pepper)." Films agreed to Körte: “Despite considerable digital expenditure, the film manages to give the inventions a certain handicraft character”, which has the advantage “that the film never looks like a pure high-tech fair”. Körte also liked the fact that the film did not "have an overly idealized picture of American capitalism". In conclusion, he stated: “It [the film] does not advance cinema, not aesthetically, not even technically - but who says that is its mission? After the first ride, you buy a second ticket for the roller coaster without expecting to advance into new spheres. "

Julian Reischl from the MovieMaze.de website rated the film with 85 percent and highlighted the action scenes as positive in the first place: “[They] are rapidly choreographed and staged very quickly, but you lose - not least because of the differences in color between the various combat participants - never the overview. Just the fact that there never seemed to be any injuries during all the shootings is a bit strange. ”The“ fine nuances ”would not be neglected either:“ Both the love story between Stark and Pepper Potts, as well as the friendship between Stark and Col. James Rhodes, as well as the aversion between Stark and Hammer get more than just the bare minimum of space in the story. ”In addition, there is a“ driven, merciless and without many facets perfectly functioning Mickey Rourke as Ivan Vanko . ”However, the acting of the main actor is particularly successful:“ As the title character, Downey shoulders practically the entire film on his own, and does not allow himself a breakaway, not a wink that would 'not fit so well' with the character. Either Favreau is a diabolical director or Downey a perfectionist. ”Overall, Iron Man 2 is “ an absolutely solid entertainment film for action fans ”, and the“ solid length of 125 minutes ”passes“ in no time and without the slightest dry spell ”.

Andreas Borcholte from Spiegel Online liked Iron Man 2 much less than the previous film. For example, the role of Tony Stark “is not really sympathetic in this display of industrial arrogance”, rather he reminds of “real technology gurus like Apple boss Steve Jobs ”. Although the film touches on “urgent current issues of copyright ethics ”, on the other hand you need “a lot of goodwill to discover these very interesting approaches in the din of the action spectacle”. Although there is enough “[s] ubversive subtext”, it is “too often outshone by show values. Or drowned out by the terribly unsuitable pig skirt of the AC / DC soundtrack. ”There is also little left of the“ humor and esprit of the first film […]. ”The fact that Air Force soldier James Rhodes is given his own armor, Borcholte commented with the words: "Seldom has the continuation syndrome (and, by the way, the military-industrial handshake) been presented more vividly." In general, the film seems "as slick as a booming advertising video for the US Army" and leaves "the obvious hubris." of the industrialist Stark are unfortunately largely uncommented, if not affirmative ”. Even Scarlett Johansson could "make a priority a good figure to contribute to the action it has, unfortunately, not much." Overall offer Iron Man 2 "[m] ore action, more fender bender, less fun, less sophisticated dialogues and above all, a rather confused, if not a contradicting story in which far too much has to be told ”.

The cinema editorial team also rated the film as rather mediocre. It is true that director Jon Favreau and his "again brilliant star Robert Downey Jr." succeed in reigniting the charm of the first part "brilliantly", but that "nevertheless only subdued enthusiasm may arise" is "due to the overloaded plot" . Although the various conflicts that Tony Stark is exposed to are "staged coherently and entertainingly [...]", nevertheless it ultimately seems "like ticking off a checklist", which is regrettable in that Iron Man 2 is "existential for Iron Man." Raises issues that - like the new staff - are only dealt with superficially. There would have been more depth. ”Nevertheless, the editors came to a comparatively positive conclusion:“ As a nice, entertaining popcorn cinema, 'Iron Man 2' works perfectly - and that's something. ”

Awards (selection)

In October 2010 Janek Sirrs , the Visual Effects Supervisor of Iron Man 2 , received a Hollywood Award in the category "Best Visual Effects" at the Hollywood Film Festival . In January 2011, the film also won a People's Choice Award in the “Most Popular Action Film ” category.

For an Oscar was Iron Man 2 in the category " best visual effects nomination," defeated in the Oscars in 2011 but against Inception .

With a total of 64 recognizable brands that were included as product placements in the film, Iron Man 2 was awarded two Brandcameo Product Placement Awards in February 2011 by the Brandchannel.com website in the categories “Product placement performance in a single film” and “Achievement in view on media coverage ”.

Iron Man 2 as part of the "Marvel Cinematic Universe"

John Slattery's role as Tony's father Howard Stark was played by Gerard Sanders in photos that appeared in Iron Man .

Just like the first part, Iron Man 2 is part of a larger, coherent universe, the "Marvel Cinematic Universe". At the end of Iron Man , Nick Fury, the head of the SHIELD secret service, tried to recruit Tony Stark for a planned superhero team, the "Avengers Initiative". In Iron Man 2 he helps Tony to overcome his health problems, but due to Tony's behavior during the course of the film, full membership is out of the question for him for the time being, Tony Stark is initially only supposed to take on the role of a consultant. Tony's late father Howard Stark, who was only seen in a few photos in the first film and was played there by Gerard Sanders, played a bigger role in Iron Man 2 and is played this time by John Slattery . Tony learns that his father was a founding member of SHIELD. In Iron Man , the animators from Industrial Light & Magic had already hidden an unfinished prototype of Captain America's shield as an Easter egg in a scene in the background . The shield can be seen again in Iron Man 2 , but this time as an actual prop .

The man played by Ali Khan, who got Ivan Vanko the forged ID cards that allow him to travel to Monaco, is identified in the credits as a member of the "Ten Rings" from the first part. In a longer version of the scene, there would have been a tattoo that corresponds to the logo on the flags in Iron Man . With this Jon Favreau wanted to prepare the "Mandarin", one of Iron Man's classic opponents from the comics, which he would have wanted to use as a villain in the third part.

During the meeting between Nick Fury and Tony Stark at the end of the film, a news program is shown on a screen that actually comes from the 2008 movie The Incredible Hulk . At the end of the latter film, Robert Downey Jr. has a short guest appearance in his role as Tony Stark and reports to General Ross ( William Hurt ) about the planned composition of the team. Thus, The Incredible Hulk is chronologically classified after Iron Man 2 , although the latter film was released later. On one of the other monitors in the scene with Stark and Fury, a map of the world can also be seen, on which several places are marked, all of which are supposed to have a meaning. Two of them are said to relate to Thor and Captain America, a third, in Africa , to the Black Panther .

When Tony Stark was assembling his "Prisma Accelerator", SHIELD agent Phil Coulson said goodbye by saying that he had been assigned to a new assignment in New Mexico . In a scene after the credits , he arrives at the site of Thor's hammer. This leads directly to Coulson's appearance in the film Thor (2011). In the latter film, Coulson is asked by his colleague Sitwell (Maximiliano Hernandez) when he sees the "Destroyer" whether the latter is "one of Stark's".

In Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), which mostly takes place at the time of World War II , a younger version of Tony's father Howard has a bigger role and is played this time by Dominic Cooper . On an exhibition in 1943, which, like the Stark Expo in Iron Man 2 in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in New York district of Queens takes place, Howard presented a flying car. Afterwards an instrumental version of the song “Make Way for Tomorrow Today” can be heard in the background, which in Iron Man 2 is the theme music of the Stark Expo of 1974. In Iron Man 2 , Howard's documents, which Tony receives from SHIELD, include the comic book Captain America Comics # 1, which contained Captain America's first comic book appearance in the real world and in Captain America: The First Avenger as a fictionalized work-up from the history of which can be seen.

The movie Marvel's The Avengers , which hit theaters in 2012, for the first time features the main characters of all previous films in the "Marvel Cinematic Universe", including Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man / Tony Stark and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow / Natasha Romanoff common team together. Gwyneth Paltrow , Clark Gregg, Samuel L. Jackson and Paul Bettany can also be seen and heard again in their roles as Pepper Potts, Phil Coulson, Nick Fury and Jarvis.

A third part of Iron Man hit theaters in May 2013. Jon Favreau was no longer directing, and his position was taken over by Shane Black . Iron Man 3 is not intended as a direct sequel to Iron Man 2 , but rather to usher in the second phase of the "Marvel Cinematic Universe" after The Avengers and to prepare The Avengers 2 .

In Captain America: The Winter Soldier came in 2014 Senator Stern again. In this film it was revealed that he is a member of HYDRA. This retrospectively explains why he was so anxious to get the Iron Man armor.
