Flick of the Switch (Engl. For " The button ") is the eighth International published studio album of the Australian hard rock band AC / DC . It was recorded in April 1983, shortly after their European tour. The album was released on August 15, 1983 in the USA. In 2003 it was re-released as part of the AC / DC Remasters series.

background

Flick of the Switch was made in the Bahamas in the same studio as AC / DC's hit album Back in Black three years earlier. For the first time the band produced their album themselves, without outside support. During the recording of the album, drummer Phil Rudd left the band due to personal problems with Malcolm Young. At this point, however, he had already completely recorded his individually recorded drum parts, so that the release could take place as planned. Rudd was eventually replaced by Simon Wright , who had already appeared in the music videos produced for this album, Flick of the Switch and Nervous Shakedown .

tour

Although the album wasn't particularly successful, there were two AC / DC concert tours taking place at the time. The Flick of the Switch tour began in Canada on October 11, 1983 and took the band across the United States. The last concert played by AC / DC on December 19, 1983 in Madison Square Garden. This tour included more than 50 performances in just under two months. The Monsters of Rock tour followed on August 11, 1984 with twelve more appearances, which included a slightly different setlist compared to the first tour.

reception

The album was considered one of the band's weaker works shortly after its release and became a financial flop. It reached number 15 in the United States and earned platinum for over one million copies sold. In Great Britain there was only gold, where the album came to number 4. In Germany it came in 6th place, in the other German-speaking areas Austria and Switzerland it placed 9th and 28th respectively.

When it was published, Uwe Lerch gave the album a rating of 4.5 out of 10 possible points in the rock-hard magazine. In a later review in the same magazine, Götz Kühnemund was much more impressed and awarded 9 points. He said: “This disc, which was even traded as a flop at the time, is criminally undervalued. Although sufficient Flick of the Switch actually not the big feats approach the band, but weak songs you will not find anyway. On the contrary: Rising Power , This House Is on Fire , Guns for Hire , Bedlam in Belgium or Badlands are among the undiscovered pearls in the band's fund. Only the production, which was in the hands of the band itself, cannot compete with the monster sound of the three predecessors (Mutt Lange). "
