Stevie Young

Stevie Young (born December 11, 1956 in Glasgow , Scotland ) is a Scottish musician and the current rhythm guitarist of the Australian hard rock band AC / DC - alongside Angus Young ( lead guitar ). He joined the band in September 2014, replacing his uncle Malcolm Young , who had not been able to play in the band since 2014 for health reasons, and who died in 2017. He is the nephew of the two guitarists from AC / DC Angus and Malcolm Young, as well as George and Alex Young . He is the son of Stephen Young, the eldest of the brothers, immigrated to Australia with the rest of the family in 1963, but returned to Scotland in the 1970s.

Career

After his first bands in the late 1970s called The Stabbers, Prowler and Tantrum, all of which were formed in the town of Hawick in the Scottish Borders , Stevie Young recorded two albums with his band Starfighters . The Starfighters were the opening act for AC / DC's 1980 tour " Back in Black " through Great Britain.

Starfighters split in 1983. When the band reunited in 1987, Young left the band a short time later and in 1989 formed the band Little Big Horn, whose demo tape was produced by Malcolm Young. They separated again in 1993 because they didn't get a record deal. Before that, however, they recorded a session for Tommy Vance's Friday Rock Show on BBC Radio 1 . Then Stevie founded the band Up Rising, but they also broke up. The band Starfighters is mentioned in the book Get Your Jumbo Jet Out of My Airport: Random Notes for AC / DC Obsessives and in the Rare Record Guide 2007.

In 2009 Young was a member of the Birmingham band Hellsarockin .

Since July 2013, Stevie has played with Pat Hambly of the Starfighters and Martin Wood as a singer in a blues trio called Blue Murda. Stevie was later replaced as guitarist by his son Angus (Gus) and bassist by John Malan. Gus is the great-nephew of Angus Young.

Careers at AC / DC

The connection with AC / DC dates back to the 1960s when Stevie played guitar with Angus and Malcolm while they were growing up in Sydney . The band name "Starfighters" also comes from the former AC / DC co-producer Harry Vanda .

During the 1988 US tour for the album Blow Up Your Video , which started on May 3, 1988, Stevie replaced rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young, as this was suffering from alcohol problems. Many fans didn't even notice the exchange, as Stevie is very similar to Malcolm.

In July 2014, AC / DC singer Brian Johnson confirmed that the band had recorded the new album Rock or Bust with Stevie because Malcolm was unable to perform for health reasons. Then in September it was announced that Stevie would replace Malcolm on a permanent basis. Malcolm died on November 18, 2017.

family

Stevie's son Angus (Gus) has been playing guitar in the reggae band 1Eye from Birmingham since July 2014 .
