Starfighters was an English New Wave of British Heavy Metal band from Birmingham , which was founded in 1979 under the name Savage and disbanded in 1984, reunited in 1987 and disbanded again in 1989.

history

The band was formed in late 1979 under the name Savage by singer Steve Burton and guitarist Stevie Young, nephew of AC / DC guitarist Angus Young . A short time later, bassist Doug Dennis, guitarist Pat Hambly and drummer Spencer Scrannage joined the band. In 1980 the band released their first single I'm Falling on Motor City Rhythm Records . The band played supporting acts for AC / DC's Back-in-Black tour in the fall of 1980 , thereby earning a contract with Jive Records , a sub-label of the Zomba Label Group . In 1981 the self-titled debut album followed. Steve Bailey could then be heard as the new drummer. In September of the same year it went on tour through Great Britain in the opening act of the Michael Schenker Group , as well as a tour through France together with Trust . Due to the success of the album in the USA , a tour followed with Ozzy Osbourne . In 1982 the second album In-Flight Movie followed , which was produced by Tony Platt . After the album was released, the band broke up with their label because they hardly felt supported by it. After a few more concerts, the band broke up in 1984. In 1987 the band was revived by Burton and Young. Rik Sandford was added as guitarist, while Steve Redvers played bass and Jamie Hawkins played drums. Local appearances followed as well as plans for another album. However, this soon changed to the release of an EP, which should contain four songs, but never appeared. In late 1988, Young left the band to play for AC / DC. The band continued their activities until Young returned to the band. A little later, Rik Sandford left the band to join UFO . Then the other members decided to take part in other projects. So Redvers joined Totally Suspect before briefly playing for Black Sabbath . Hawkins also briefly joined UFO. By participating in other projects, the project Starfighters could not be continued, so the band officially broke up in 1989.

style

The music is described as a mix of AC / DC, Rose Tattoo and Blackfoot . Especially on the second album In-Flight Movie , the influences from Southern Rock became clearer in order to avoid comparisons with AC / DC if possible. The band is comparable to groups like More and Split Beaver . Metalion from Slayer -Fanzine compared the band to groups like Aerosmith and Foreigner .
