Cliff Williams (* 14. December 1949 in Romford , UK ) is a former bassist of the Australian hard rock - band AC / DC .

biography

Williams moved from Romford to London at the age of nine, wore long hair and fancy clothes at an early age and looked around the music scene. He deliberately distanced himself from the working life in the factory that his father led, as did Angus and Malcolm Young of AC / DC.

He started his career in 1967. He was a member of the British bands Home and Bandit . This was dissolved after a few minor successes, so that Williams was looking for a new band around 1977.

In 1977, AC / DC looked for a successor to Mark Evans and found him in Williams. According to the then AC / DC manager Michael Browning, the band actually wanted a different bass player, but Browning did not think he was a good fit for the band. So Browning Williams gave some tips on how to behave before he had to audition (in particular, he should play as undemanding and simple as possible). Williams followed this recommendation and was bassist for the band from May 27, 1977. There he mostly played simple bass lines, which mainly consist of eighth or quarter notes.

He made his first appearance with AC / DC on July 7, 1977 in Cleveland , USA .

Cliff Williams mainly plays Music Man basses, but also basses made by Fender . He also uses an SVT-4 Pro amplifier and an SVT-810E loudspeaker from the manufacturer Ampeg .

In late 2007, Brian Johnson and Cliff Williams recorded three songs ( Chain Gang , Chase that Tail and Who Phoned the Law ) for the film Totally Baked , which was only released on DVD.

In July 2016, through an interview with Gulfshore Life magazine, his withdrawal from the band AC / DC after the tour was completed. He has recorded 14 albums with the band.
