history

Ampeg goes back to 1946 by Everette Hull and Stanley Michaels under the name Michaels-Hull Electronic Labs. in Newark, New Jersey . The pickup for basses developed by Hull was produced and sold there. It was called Amplified Peg , or Ampeg for short . In 1949 Michaels left the company and Hull chose the current name. He has been granted six US patents for amplifiers.

In 1963, what is now called The Ampeg Company, Inc. , went public. In 1967 it was taken over by Unimusic, Inc. and in 1971 by Magnavox . In 1980 Ampex went to Music Technology, Inc. (MTI). After their bankruptcy, Ampeg was taken over by St. Louis Music, Inc. (SLM) in 1986 .

In 2005, the then owner of St. Louis Music, Inc., Eugene Kornblum, sold the entire company to LOUD Technologies Inc. , based in Woodinville. Shortly thereafter, Loud gave up its own production in the USA and outsourced it to contract manufacturers in Asia.

In May 2018, the Ampeg brand was taken over by the Yamaha Guitar Group .

equipment

The best-known products are the devices of the SVT series, which have been around since 1969. In the beginning, the models from the SVT series were tube amplifiers , later the series was supplemented with models with transistor amplifiers and finally with Class-D amplifiers , each of which has a 12AX7 tube installed in the preamp. The B series for combo bass amplifiers and the Portaflex series are also established, while the guitar amplifiers are more of a side business for Ampeg.

Devices from this manufacturer are used by bassists Cliff Burton , Billy Sheehan , Bootsy Collins , Robert Trujillo , Mark Hoppus , TM Stevens , Tom Araya , Les Claypool and guitarist Josh Homme , among others .
