Single releases

The album's four singles , Stiff Upper Lip , Satellite Blues , Safe in New York City and Meltdown , were not particularly successful. None made it onto the Billboard Hot 100 or the UK Top 40 . However, all four made it into the American mainstream rock charts, with Stiff Upper Lip and Satellite Blues even in the top 10.

Tour Edition

In Australia and Europe, a tour edition of Stiff Upper Lip was also released on February 8, 2001 , which included the original album and a bonus disc. The attached CD included the B-side of the Safe in New York City single, five live versions of old AC / DC songs recorded at the Las Ventas Arena in Madrid in 1996, and three music videos .

Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote on allmusic: “It is the album that the highly acclaimed Ballbreaker produced by Rick Rubin should have been: a simple, addicting, heavy album, bursting with cheeky riffs, supported by a crunchy sound that goes through the guts . "

The Rolling Stone Magazine awarded three out of five stars. The rock-hard magazine awarded 8.5 out of ten possible points, with Götz Kühnemund's verdict : “That AC / DC would not succeed in reminding glorious Back in Black / For Those About to Rock times (from the old Bon Scott Masterworks, not to mention), was certain from the start. The reason for this is as simple as it is irrefutable: Brian Johnson no longer has the power of a thirty-year-old and has been cooking (in the studio) on the back burner for at least ten years. You always have the feeling that the man is screeching at the absolute upper limit of his possibilities and is falling out of his shoes at any moment - which was particularly damaging to the last studio album Ballbreaker . On Stiff Upper Lip , Brian (who surprisingly does his job flawlessly live) sounds a bit more powerful again, at least on some of the songs. In the case of the Highway to Hell- suspect Satellite Blues , the up-tempo rocker Safe In New York City (with Let There Be Rock Beat) or the catchy tunes House of Jazz and Damned, he at least achieved Fly on the Wall level. With numbers like Hold Me Back (ironically Brian's favorite song) or the rather unspectacular opener Stiff Upper Lip, on the other hand, he whistles from the last hole, which is emphasized by the guitar-heavy mix. That said, Stiff Upper Lip is far from a let down and definitely stronger than ball breakers . George Young's earthy, frippery production lets the heart of the band, Malcolm's rhythm guitar, come into its own and in places even reminds of old milestones of the Bon Scott era. Drummer Phil Rudd, who heard the long break on Ballbreaker , is gradually finding his way back to his old, unique groove. And the indestructible Angus, whose energy is obviously enough for two lives, does what he has always done better than anyone: He tirelessly plays the blues scales up and down so that the fingerboard of his SG is hopelessly sizzling to himself. Sure, there are stronger AC / DC albums, lots of them - but the comparison with the "competition" (as if it had ever existed for AC / DC) Stiff Upper Lip still wins easily. "
