In addition to the bullfight, Las Ventas also serves as a venue for concerts and various sporting events.

history

When bullfighting began to enjoy growing audiences in Madrid at the beginning of the 20th century, the city decided to build a new arena. In 1918, the Provincial Administration of Madrid acquired the land in Ventas del Espíritu Santo in the east of the then city. The construction of the arena designed by the architects José Espeliú y Arruga and Manuel Muñoz Monasterio in Neomudéjar style finally began in 1922. The first bullfight took place on June 17, 1931 while the construction was still in progress . The proceeds from the benefit event went to unemployed construction workers. The presidium was made up of Niceto Alcalá Zamora , President of the Second Republic , and Alejandro Lerroux . It was not until three years later, on October 21, 1934, that the bullring was officially opened. The first full season took place in 1935, with a total of 47 bullfights.

During the Spanish Civil War , which lasted from 1936 to 1939 , the arena was empty and reopened on May 24, 1939. However, Las Ventas rose to become one of the most famous bullfighting venues in the country with the Feria de San Isidro , launched in 1947 , one of the most prestigious events of the Calendar, on.

On June 28, 1994, Las Ventas was declared a Protected Cultural Monument.
