Niceto Alcalá Zamora y Torres [ niˈθeto alkaˈla θaˈmoɾa ], (born July 6, 1877 in Priego de Córdoba , † February 18, 1949 in Buenos Aires , Argentina ) was a lawyer , Spanish right-wing liberal politician and first president of the Second Republic .

Zamora y Torres studied at the University of Granada. In 1917/18 and 1922/23 he was briefly a minister in various cabinets. In 1930 he founded the Derecha Liberal Republicana ( Republican Liberal Rights ), the later Partido Republicano Progresista ( PRP - Progressive Republican Party ). In 1931 he played a decisive role in the elimination of the monarchy , became provisional head of government for a short time , and then from 1931 to 1936 the first president of the Second Republic.

After the election victory of the Popular Front ( Frente Popular ), he was removed from office on April 7th. The outbreak of World War II surprised him in Norway; In 1942 he emigrated to Argentina via France, where he died seven years later. In 1979 his body was buried in Madrid. His diaries and notes have been published since 2011, shedding new light on the dramatic events of 1936.
