David Ferrer Ern (born April 2, 1982 in Xàbia ) is a former Spanish tennis player . The 1.75 m tall and 73 kg heavy right-hander began his professional career in 2000 and has since won 26 singles and two doubles titles on the ATP World Tour . Ferrer became known as a clay court specialist, but he also got good results on other surfaces. He was part of the Spanish Davis Cup team that won the title in 2008, 2009 and 2011. He was six times in the semi-finals and once in the final of a Grand Slam tournament and once in the final of the Tennis Masters Cup . In July 2013 he reached third place in the world rankings for the first time.

Life

At the age of 13, Ferrer moved with his family from Xàbia to Gandia and two years later to Barcelona to train there with the support of the Catalan Tennis Federation. He later spent nine months at Juan Carlos Ferrero's tennis academy before returning to Xàbia.

On November 28, 2015, he married his previous girlfriend Marta.

Career

First years

In 2000 David Ferrer turned pro and won his first future tournaments. The following year he secured his first Challenger title despite a mixed season performance . In the 2002 season he celebrated his first successes on the ATP Tour : in Bucharest he celebrated his first ATP title win after defeating José Acasuso and reached another final in Umag , in which he had to admit defeat to his compatriot Carlos Moyá . This was the first time that Ferrer was in the top 100 .

2003-2005

In the 2003 season he reached the final in doubles in Acapulco and in singles in Sopot - both times he could not prevail. In Rome , he surprised the tennis world with a victory over defending champion and top 10 player Andre Agassi . In 2004 he reached the quarter-finals of a Masters tournament in Hamburg for the first time . He finished the season in the top 50 without further success. In 2005, Ferrer was able to improve significantly: he reached the semi-finals twice in a Masters tournament ( Miami and Rome) and was in the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in Roland Garros (Loss to eventual champion Rafael Nadal ). Ferrer lost his only season finale in singles in his hometown of Valencia , where he had to admit defeat to Russian Igor Andreev . At the side of Santiago Ventura , however, he won two doubles titles ( Viña del Mar and Acapulco) - his only two to this day. His achievements were also reflected in the ranking, Ferrer ended the season in 14th and thus in the top 20 for the first time.

Ferrer at the 2007 Australian Open

2006

At the start of the season, Ferrer was among the top 10 for the first time for a period of five weeks after reaching the round of 16 at the Australian Open for the first time in his career. The clay court season was relatively successful with two quarter-finals in Monte Carlo and Hamburg , although he did not come close to his previous year's result with the third round defeat against compatriot Rubén Ramírez Hidalgo in Roland Garros. In July, Ferrer secured his second ATP title after four years. In Stuttgart he wrestled José Acasuso in a five-set game over five hours. With solid performance - e.g. B. Entry into the round of 16 at Wimbledon - he held his world ranking position and ended the season again at position 14.

2007

Ferrer opened the season in Auckland with his third title win, in the final he defeated Tommy Robredo . At the Australian Open , like last year, he reached the round of 16, where he had to admit defeat to the American Mardy Fish . At the Masters tournaments in Indian Wells , Monte Carlo and Hamburg , he reached the quarter-finals. However, the Grand Slam tournaments in the summer failed: in Roland Garros he was defeated by Fernando Verdasco in the third round, in Wimbledon by Paul-Henri Mathieu in the second round. In July, Ferrer won his second title of the season in Båstad with a final win over Nicolás Almagro . The North American hard court season got off to a promising start, with the Cincinnati Masters reaching the quarterfinals. His performance at the US Open was even better : after defeating David Nalbandian , he defeated his compatriot Nadal, number 2 in the world, in the quarter-finals; in his first semi-final at a Grand Slam tournament, however, he had to admit defeat Novak Đoković .

Ferrer at the 2008 Pacific Life Open

In Tokyo he won his third title of the season with a victory over Richard Gasquet , and at the Paris Masters he reached the quarter-finals for the first time. Thanks to his good results, he moved up to 8th place in the ranking, qualifying for the Tennis Masters Cup for the first time . Ferrer was the big surprise there: with wins over Gasquet, Nadal and Đoković, he was the only player unbeaten in the group stage. In the semifinals he defeated Andy Roddick , like all group opponents before, without losing a set. In the final, however, he found his master in defending champion Roger Federer . At the end of the year Ferrer was in 5th place in the world rankings.

2008

The new year began with a first quarter-finals in Melbourne , where he was defeated by the eventual champion Novak Đoković. The clay court season then brought the first title of the season, in the final victory over Almagro he triumphed for the first time in his hometown of Valencia . He lost the quarter-finals in Monte Carlo to Rafael Nadal, to whom he was defeated again in his second season finale a week later in Barcelona . At the French Open he reached the quarter-finals as in 2005, but had to let local hero Gaël Monfils go first. The grass season began for Ferrer in 's-Hertogenbosch , where he secured his second title of the season and his first title on grass with a win over Marc Gicquel . At Wimbledon he had to admit defeat to Croatian Mario Ančić in the third round . At the US Open there was a surprising defeat in the third round against the No. 126 in the world, Kei Nishikori . Ferrer was also only moderately successful in the other tournaments, he finished the year in 12th position.

Ferrer at the 2009 French Open

2009

The 2009 season was very mixed for Ferrer. In the Grand Slam tournaments he never got past the third round, in Flushing Meadows he even failed in round two. For the first time since the 2005 season, he did not win an ATP tournament. At the tournaments in Dubai and Barcelona he moved into the final, but had to admit defeat to Đoković and Nadal. Undisputed success this season were his appearances in the Davis Cup . In the final against the Czech Republic, he won all of his games and made a decisive contribution to the successful defense of the Spanish team's title .

2010

After a long dry spell, Ferrer won another tournament at the beginning of the 2010 season, the ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco , where he beat former number 1, Juan Carlos Ferrero, in the final. In the further course of the clay court season he remained successful and reached the final of a Masters tournament in Rome for the first time in May . Here he was defeated by defending champion Rafael Nadal with 5: 7 and 2: 6. In Roland Garros, where he was traded as an insider tip, he was eliminated surprisingly early (third round) and in three sets against the Austrian Jürgen Melzer . After his five-set defeat against Robin Söderling at Wimbledon , the North American hard court season was hardly better - at the US Open he also failed in the last sixteen. In the autumn he reached the semi-finals in Kuala Lumpur , at the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing Ferrer even made it to the final, where he failed to Đoković. With the points collected, however, he moved back into the top 10 after two years . He confirmed his good form at the home tournament he helped organize in Valencia, where he reached the final, where he defeated the lucky loser Marcel Granollers in two sets - at the same time, this was his first title win in the hall. After the BNP Paribas Masters 2010 , where he was eliminated in the round of 16, he was among the top eight players in the world rankings and was thus qualified for the 2010 ATP World Tour Finals . There Ferrer could not build on the last performance shown: he lost all group games and did not win a set. Nevertheless, he ended the year in the top 10 for the second time since 2007.

2011

Ferrer at Wimbledon 2011

Ferrer started the 2011 season with a title win at the tournament in Auckland , a preparation tournament for the Australian Open, where he defeated David Nalbandian 6: 3, 6: 2 in the final. He was also able to prove his good form in Melbourne : he moved into the semi-finals with a victory over world number one Nadal - his second Grand Slam semi-final after the 2007 US Open - but had to admit defeat to Andy Murray there. In February he defended his title in Acapulco with a final victory over Nicolás Almagro. At the following Masters tournament in Indian Wells it set an opening defeat, in Miami he reached the quarterfinals. Ferrer opened the European clay court season successfully in Monte Carlo , where he reached his second final in a Masters tournament after 2010 in Rome. But as in the previous year, he had to admit defeat to his compatriot Nadal after an extremely competitive match. A week later in Barcelona , the two met again in the final, this time Ferrer lost in two sets. At the French Open , after defeating Jarkko Nieminen , Julien Benneteau and Serhij Stachowskyj in three sets, he moved into the round of 16, where after four hours he won 4: 6, 6: 2, 5: 7, 6: 1, 6: 8 against Gaël Monfils. At Wimbledon he was eliminated from Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the round of 16. In July he reached another final in Båstad , which he lost to local hero Robin Söderling in straight sets. Due to a wrist injury, he had to miss most of the North American hard court season, he could only intervene again in Cincinnati . At the US Open , like the majors before, he failed in the round of 16 when he lost to Andy Roddick in four sets. In Asia Ferrer was more successful again, in Tokyo he made it to the semi-finals, in Shanghai he reached the final of a Masters tournament for the third time in his career, but had to admit defeat to Andy Murray again. However, his points account was sufficient to qualify for the third time for the ATP World Tour Finals . In Valencia he failed as defending champion in the semifinals to Juan Mónaco and in Paris in the quarterfinals surprisingly to John Isner . At the Tour Finals in London, he qualified for the semifinals with victories over Murray and world number one Novak Đoković, whom he was able to defeat for the first time on hard court. So he survived the group stage at the year-end event since 2007 for the first time before he had to admit defeat to eventual winner Federer. The culmination of the season was the victory in the Davis Cup final : Ferrer was able to beat Argentina's number 1, Juan Martín del Potro , in five sets and thus made a decisive contribution to the 3-1 success. This was the third time he was part of the victorious Spanish team after 2008 and 2009. As in 2007, Ferrer finished the season in fifth place and thus in the top 10 for the third time.

2012

David Ferrer at the US Open 2012

Ferrer started the season successfully in Auckland , defending his title from last year with a final win over Olivier Rochus . At the Australian Open , he reached the quarter-finals, but lost there to world number one Đoković. After that, he was able to celebrate two more tournament victories on clay in South America: in Buenos Aires he defeated Almagro in the final, in Acapulco Fernando Verdasco. The clay court season in Europe was also satisfactory , with the exception of an opening defeat in Monte Carlo : in Barcelona he reached the final, in Rome the semifinals; both times he lost to Nadal. In 2012 he was able to advance to the semi-finals of the French Open for the first time , but there he was again clearly inferior to his compatriot Nadal in three sets. The grass season began in 's-Hertogenbosch with a final victory over Philipp Petzschner . Also in Båstad he won the title for the second time after 2007 by defeating Almagro again in the final. In Wimbledon he reached the quarterfinals for the first time, where he was eliminated by Andy Murray. At the Olympic Games in London , Ferrer competed in both singles and doubles, as in 2008. While he surprisingly lost to the Japanese Kei Nishikori in the round of 16, he was able to advance to the semifinals with Feliciano López . There they were defeated by the French Michaël Llodra and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in a long match with 3: 6, 6: 4, [16:18]. Ferrer and López also lost in the bronze medal match against a French double, Julien Benneteau and Richard Gasquet defeated the Spaniards 7: 6, 4 and 6: 2. Until the Games, Ferrer and López had not won a single double match at ATP level together. The preparation for the US Open was mixed. After the Olympic Games, Ferrer skipped the Masters tournament in Toronto , in Cincinnati he was eliminated in his opening game against Stanislas Wawrinka . At the US Open, Ferrer beat Janko Tipsarević in the quarter-finals before losing to second in the world Novak Đoković in the semifinals in four sets. In autumn, the Spaniard celebrated two more tournament victories: at his home tournament in Valencia , he won the title for the third time with a final victory over Oleksandr Dolhopolow , making him the record winner of the tournament. Just a week later, Ferrer celebrated his greatest career victory: in Paris-Bercy he won the final against Jerzy Janowicz and was now victorious for the first time in a tournament in the Masters category. At the ATP World Tour Finals in London, he narrowly missed qualifying for the semifinals.

2013

As in the previous two years, Ferrer won his first title of the season in Auckland , where he won for the fourth time. After the defeat in the Australian Open semifinals against the top seeded Novak Đoković, Ferrer moved back to fourth place in the world rankings, which he already held in 2008. After winning the title in Buenos Aires , he then lost two finals, in Acapulco very clearly with 0: 6 and 2: 6 against Rafael Nadal, in Miami very narrowly against Andy Murray . At ATP Oeiras he was defeated in the final to Stanislas Wawrinka . At the Madrid Masters and Rome Masters , Ferrer failed in the quarterfinals against Nadal. This was also the case in the final of the French Open (clearly in three sets), where he reached the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in his career - and even without losing a set - even though he had nothing to oppose Nadal in the final. At Wimbledon , like last year, he reached the quarter-finals, which he clearly lost in three sets against Juan Martín del Potro . After the tournament, David Ferrer was ranked third in the world for the first time in his career, his best placement to date. At the US Open he also reached the quarter-finals in the fourth Grand Slam tournament of the 2013 Tour , which he lost to Richard Gasquet in five sets. In the following tournaments in Asia, Ferrer only played at the Masters in Shanghai . He failed in the round of 16 against Florian Mayer 4: 6, 3: 6. At the If Stockholm Open Ferrer only failed in the final against Grigor Dimitrov 6: 2, 3: 6 and 4: 6, after defeating Ernests Gulbis in the semi-finals 3: 6, 6: 4 and 6: 1. In Valencia he reached the final again, but also lost this against Mikhail Juschny with 3: 6, 5: 7. As in the previous year, he moved into the final at the Masters in Paris after victories among others over Rafael Nadal and Tomáš Berdych , where he had to admit defeat to Novak Đoković 5: 7 and 5: 7. In the final World Tour Finals he lost all group games. He finished the season in third place in the world rankings.
