The winner of the individual competition was defending champion and seeding list first Rafael Nadal , who had now won four titles in a row (25 individual titles in total). In the final he prevailed against his compatriot David Ferrer 6: 1, 4: 6, 6: 1. In doubles, the brothers Bob and Mike Bryan won their second title in Barcelona after 2003. The Bryans won the final against Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski in straight sets 6: 3 and 6: 2, which meant their 46th joint title. Last year's winners Alexander Waske and Andrei Pavel did not take part in the tournament again.
The field of participants in the single competition consisted of 56 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 24 pairs. The eight top seeded players in singles or pairings in doubles each got a bye into the second round. The total prize money was 803,000 euros, the total financial liabilities were 824,000 euros.
The qualification took place on April 26th and 27th, 2008. Seven qualifying places were played, which entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament. There were also two lucky losers.
The following prize money and world ranking points were paid out or credited for reaching the respective round. Players who entered the main field from qualification received the specified qualification points in addition to those for reaching the respective round. Otherwise the amounts are not to be understood as cumulative. The prize money for the double competition is valid per team.
