Alexander Waske (born March 31, 1975 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a former German tennis player .

Tennis career

In 2005, the double specialist won the World Team Cup with the German team at the Rochus Club in Düsseldorf. In the same year he and his partner Jürgen Melzer were in the semi-finals in doubles at the Australian Open , where they defeated number one on the seeding list, Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor , and together with his Davis Cup colleague Rainer Schüttler in the first round he was also in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon. In addition, Alexander Waske celebrated a great success in the 2005 Davis Cup promotion game, in which he and Tommy Haas beat the Czech doubles František Čermák and Leoš Friedl in five sets. As a result, he contributed a large part to the rise of the German Davis Cup team.

But he also had big games on the ATP Tour: For example, the narrow end at Wimbledon 2003, where he was defeated 6: 7, 5: 7, 6: 7 on Court 1 to the British Greg Rusedski . In Tokyo 2002 he beat Carlos Moyá , then world number six, in Munich 2004 Goran Ivanišević , Wimbledon winner from 2001. In 2005 he beat the French Open winner from 2005, Rafael Nadal , then world number second, on the lawn in Halle . In 2006, Alexander Waske and Rainer Schüttler beat ex-Wimbledon winner Pat Cash in doubles . In two sets they won against Cash and his Indian partner Karan Rastogi .

He played for the German Davis Cup team for the first time in 2004 and was able to beat the Israeli doubles Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram together with Tommy Haas . His Davis Cup double balance is 7: 1, in the singles 1: 0. His greatest strengths are serve and fighting spirit, which is why he is also considered a team player. In 2003, 2005 and 2006 he was in the top 100 singles, and in the top 30 doubles in 2005, 2006 and 2007 he was German team champion in 2004 with Blau-Weiß Sundern and in 2006 with Blauweiss Halle, and in 2004 he was also Mister Bundesliga.

He won his first ATP title on April 16, 2006 in Houston in doubles with Michael Kohlmann . They beat the brothers Bob and Mike Bryan , number one in the world in doubles, in the quarterfinals . At the BMW Open 2006, he won the second double title with Andrei Pavel . He also reached the finals with the German team at the World Team Cup in 2006 by winning each time decisive doubles with Michael Kohlmann, which they then lost to Croatia. He won two more double titles in 2007 in Zagreb with Kohlmann and in Barcelona with Pavel. With Andrei Pavel he failed at the French Open 2006 in the double semifinals to the brothers Bryan, in the singles in the second round to Tommy Haas. In September 2006 Waske played a decisive role in Germany's remaining in the Davis Cup world group, when he won an important win in doubles together with Michael Kohlmann against the Ratiwatana brothers from Thailand and the next day also defeated the clearly favored Paradorn Srichaphan in singles and thus secured the decisive third point for Germany.

Alexander Waske also impressed against Croatia in February 2007, when the German team reached the quarter-finals with his and Michael Kohlmann's efforts and with Tommy Haas. Against Russia in September 2007 he fought with Philipp Petzschner in the quarter-finals, despite a torn muscle in his elbow, the 2-1 intermediate result, whereby the match ended with a 2-3 defeat.

In May 2011 Waske returned to the ATP Tour after a break of almost two years and since then has been able to reach a final in Bangkok as well as the second round at the French Open 2011 and the US Open 2011 in doubles with various partners . As a result, he moved back into the top 100 of the double world rankings in January 2012 for the first time since April 2008 .

At the US Open 2012 Waske was eliminated in doubles in the first round. He then announced on August 29th that this was his last Grand Slam appearance. On October 20, 2012, he finally announced the end of his career.

General

In 2010, Waske founded the Schüttler Waske Tennis University in Offenbach together with Rainer Schüttler , which is responsible for promoting young talent.
