Alexander Peya (born June 27, 1980 in Vienna ) is an Austrian tennis player .
Career
Peya started playing tennis at the age of five. As a teenager he worked with Günter Bresnik and Joakim Nyström .
On April 30, 2007, Peya achieved his best position in the single world rankings with rank 92 and on August 12, 2013 with rank 3, his best ranking in doubles. His career highlights include the quarter-finals at the French Open 2006 and the Wimbledon Championships 2008 , where he and his doubles partner Philipp Petzschner lost to Jonas Björkman and Kevin Ullyett in five sets. Alexander Peya has already won 14 ATP tournaments in doubles, in singles a semi-final in Zagreb 2007 is his best result.
2008
In September, the Davis Cup against Great Britain was about staying in the world group. Peya lost in the second individual against world number four and US Open finalist Andy Murray with 4: 6, 1: 6, 3: 6; However, he won the doubles with Jürgen Melzer and put Austria 2-1. Since Melzer lost the decisive individual against Murray, it was up to Peya to get the decisive point. In the last match he defeated Alex Bogdanovic 2: 6, 6: 4, 6: 4, 6: 2 and made the 3: 2 victory clear for Austria.
At the Bank Austria Tennis Trophy Peya had to say goodbye in the first round against the later finalist Gaël Monfils 6: 3, 1: 6, 3: 6, but he reached the double final alongside Philipp Petzschner. The German-Austrian duo then clearly lost in the final with 1: 6 and 5: 7 against Max Mirny and Andy Ram .
2009-2014
In 2009 he was a semi-finalist with Petzschner in Memphis and Newport . He also won the tournaments of the ATP Challenger Tour in Tenerife (with Petzschner) and in Eckental (with Michael Kohlmann ).
In 2010 he won the Challenger tournaments in Busan (with Rameez Junaid) and in Cremona (with Martin Slanar).
In 2011 he reached the semi-finals in Wimbledon with his partner Christopher Kas , but ended the partnership at the end of the year and played with Oliver Marach at the beginning of 2012 , with whom he celebrated his first title at ATP level in Hamburg in July 2011 . During the year he changed partners several times, although at the beginning of 2012 he had won a preparation tournament for the Australian Open with Marach. At the side of his new double partner Bruno Soares , he won three tournaments in autumn, the ATP World Tour 250 tournament in Kuala Lumpur and the two ATP World Tour 500 events in Tokyo and Valencia .
The 2013 season was even more successful. Together with Bruno Soares, Peya won a total of five titles and played in four other finals. Among other things, he moved into a Grand Slam final for the first time at the US Open . Their greatest success was winning the title at the Masters tournament in Montreal , which they repeated the following year .
Since 2015
After a moderately successful 2015 season, Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares announced at the Erste Bank Open 2015 in the Wiener Stadthalle that they would go their separate ways the following season. Peya started with Philipp Petzschner in 2016, Soares played alongside Jamie Murray .
Private life
Peya's father is the head of the commercial social security institution , his mother is a housewife. He has a brother. Peya is married and has two sons (born in 2012 and 2015).
