Dominik Meffert (born April 9, 1981 in Mayen ) is a former German tennis player .

life and career

Until 2002: The first years as a professional and a temporary break

In the junior division Dominik Meffert was able to win several tournaments in Europe. At the same time, he has also participated in future tournaments in the adult sector since 1998. In 2000 he was listed for the first time in the tennis world rankings . In 2001 he tried his hand at the ATP Challenger Tour , but couldn't gain a foothold there. In 2002 he decided to put his professional career on hold for the time being and instead began studying sports in Cologne, as he said he was "not ready in the head" at the time. However, he continued to play team tennis, and took part in the individual at the German tennis championships in Quiigart , where he reached the quarter-finals.

2004–2006: First future title and ATP debut

After passing his intermediate diploma, he went back to professional tennis at the end of 2004, and the first successes came in 2005: Meffert reached three finals in future tournaments, one of which he won in Bagnères-de-Bigorre . He also made it to the semi-finals at the Challenger tournament in Aachen . At the end of the year he was in the top 300 in the world rankings.

In early 2006 Dominik Meffert tried for the first time at the Australian Open to qualify for a Grand Slam tournament, but failed in the third qualifying round to Danai Udomchoke . In February 2006 Dominik Meffert was able to qualify for the main draw of an ATP tournament for the first time in Rotterdam , and benefited in his first match from the abandonment of his opponent Raemon Sluiter before losing to Arvind Parmar . It should remain the only ATP tournament for which he could qualify this year. At Challenger level, he was able to move into the semi-finals in Shrewsbury in November 2006 , and win his first title in doubles alongside Tomas Behrend in Freudenstadt .

2007–2008: Grand Slam debut, ATP quarter-finals and entry into the top 200

The first half of 2007 went without any major individual successes, the highlight was the win in the doubles competition at the Challenger tournament in Durban together with Rik De Voest . In July 2007 Meffert was able to reach a Challenger individual final in Scheveningen for the first time. Including qualification, he had won seven matches in a row here. Even greater successes were to follow: In August 2007, Meffert qualified for the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at the US Open . However, it was the end of the line against Andrei Pavel in the first round . Things went better a month later at the ATP tournament in Bangkok : After successfully qualifying, he was able to defeat the top 100 players Amer Delić and Igor Kunizyn in the first two rounds and thus reached an ATP quarter-finals for the first time. There he had to admit defeat to his compatriot and later finalist Benjamin Becker in a close match. The die-hard Borussia Mönchengladbach fan then practiced a custom otherwise only found in football: he changed jerseys with Becker, much to the amusement of the Thai spectators. Because of these successes, Meffert ended a year in the top 200 for the first time.

In 2008 Meffert missed the qualification for the first three Grand Slam tournaments. For this he was able to qualify at the ATP tournament in Gstaad and defeated the top 30 player Andreas Seppi in the first round , but then lost to Jérémy Chardy in a very close match, which was decided exclusively on tie-breaks. On the Challenger Tour he reached two semi-finals and three quarter-finals this year.

2009–2010: Challenger title and injury break

In early 2009, Dominik Meffert decided not to travel to Australia, but instead qualified successfully at the ATP tournament in San José , where he lost to Radek Štěpánek in the first round . In Sarajevo he reached his second Challenger final in March 2009, where he was defeated by Ivan Dodig . In July 2009 another successful qualification followed at the ATP tournament in Stuttgart as well as a first round defeat against Victor Hănescu , a month later Meffert was finally able to celebrate his first Challenger title in Geneva after defeating Benjamin Balleret .

The year 2010 began with a double title at the Challenger tournament in Tangier . An extremely successful trip to South America followed in April with three Challenger titles: alongside Austrian Philipp Oswald , Meffert was able to win doubles in Pereira , and a week later he was victorious in Curitiba in both singles and doubles with Leonardo Tavares . He won the singles against Nicolás Massú , the 2004 Olympic champion, as well as the local heroes and top 100 players Marcos Daniel and Ricardo Mello . He was also able to conquer a very big name at the ATP lawn tournament in Halle : After moving up into the main field as a lucky loser , he met Juan Carlos Ferrero , the 2003 French Open winner and former world number one , in the first round . On the center court, Meffert defeated the Spaniard, who was fourth, in two sets, but then lost in the second round to the Slovak Lukáš Lacko , although he had already won the first set. Due to persistent shoulder problems, Meffert had to have an operation in July 2010 and was then out for the rest of the season.

From 2011: Comeback with Challenger titles

In January 2011 Dominik Meffert celebrated his comeback on the Challenger Tour in Nouméa after a six-month injury break. In singles he was eliminated as a qualifier in the first main round, but in doubles he won his first title this year together with Frederik Nielsen . In qualifying for the Australian Open 2011 , Meffert was eliminated in the first round against Bobby Reynolds . At the subsequent Challenger tournament in Heilbronn , Meffert was able to reach the quarterfinals in singles, defeating the top 100 player Marsel İlhan . A week later Meffert could not be stopped in Courmayeur until the semifinals by the eventual tournament winner Marius Copil . In Wolfsburg , he reached a Challenger final for the first time in the sixth tournament since his injury break. He won the first set against Ruben Bemelmans , but lost the match in three sets, as did the double final with Frederik Nielsen. Just two weeks later, Meffert reached the final again in both singles and doubles at the Challenger tournament in Kyoto . First he won the title in doubles with Simon Stadler , and a day later he also won the individual final against the young Cedrik-Marcel Stebe . In the world rankings, he then returned to the top 200. The 2011 clay court season was less successful for Meffert: In five tournaments he failed in the first round, at the French Open he was eliminated in the second qualifying round. Things went better on grass: In June, Dominik Meffert succeeded in qualifying at the ATP tournament in Halle, as in the previous year, but lost in the first main round to the later finalist Philipp Petzschner . At the end of July Meffert won his third double Challenger title of the year in Dortmund together with Björn Phau .

In the 2012 season , Meffert's fourth title win on the Challenger Tour in the singles in Oberstaufen was the only major success. From 2013 he celebrated more and more successes in doubles: with Andreas Beck he won one, with Philipp Oswald three titles. In addition, he was in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at Wimbledon . After qualifying, Meffert and Oswald were eliminated in four sets against Max Mirny and Horia Tecău . This was followed by two double titles on the Challenger Tour in the 2014 season and another in 2015 . Meffert played his last game in the world in June 2015 in the doubles qualification at Wimbledon.

Career as a club player

Dominik Meffert played from 2002 in the first tennis Bundesliga for TK Kurhaus Aachen , with whom he became German champion in 2008 and 2009 and German runner-up in 2005. In 2011 Aachen became German champion for the third time. At the award ceremony, Meffert, who had contributed one single and three double victories this season, received the trophy as team captain.
