Lukáš Lacko (born November 3, 1987 in Piešťany ) is a Slovak tennis player .

life and career

Lukáš Lacko was already successful as a junior and won numerous tournaments around the world. His greatest successes in Junior Grand Slams were reaching the semi-finals at the French Open 2005 and two quarter-finals at the Australian Open 2005 and the French Open 2004 .

Lacko has been playing in the adult segment since 2004, mostly at future tournaments . In 2005 the first successes came there and he reached six finals, of which he was able to win two.

In 2006 he was able to win two more future tournaments and rose to a place in the top 300 in the tennis world rankings . From now on he played more tournaments on the ATP Challenger Tour , and was able to reach a final there for the first time in August 2006 in Binghamton . In addition, this year he was appointed to the Slovak Davis Cup team for the first time , but could not prevent the defeats against Chile and Belgium despite two individual wins. He has since played in nine Davis Cup games and has a balanced record.

At the beginning of 2007 Lacko was able to qualify for a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at the Australian Open , but lost to the Australian Robert Smeets in the first round . He could not qualify at the rest of the Grand Slam tournaments of the year, but at the ATP tournament in Stuttgart , where he was eliminated in the first round against David Ferrer . On the Challenger Tour, Lacko was able to reach two finals in Rijeka and Istanbul , before winning his first title in Kolding in October 2007 . He finished the year at number 139 in the world rankings.

The year 2008 began promisingly with the renewed qualification for the Australian Open , but as in the previous year, the end came in the first round against Denis Istomin . The rest of the year was less successful, however: He could not qualify for another ATP tournament and reached the quarterfinals only three times in 21 Challenger tournaments.

As a result, he dropped out of the top 300 in the world rankings and had to play future tournaments again from 2009. After four future titles and a successful qualification for the ATP tournament in Zagreb , however, he had again collected enough world ranking points to be allowed to start in Challenger tournaments. In May 2009, Lacko won his second Challenger title in Fargʻona . A month later he was eliminated in the final qualifying round for the ATP tournament in Halle against the Israeli Harel Levy , but moved into the main field as a lucky loser . There he had to compete against Levy again, was able to defeat him in the second attempt and thus celebrate his first individual victory at ATP level. Subsequently, Lacko successfully played the qualification for Wimbledon , but retired in the first main round against the later quarter-finalist Ivo Karlović . In October 2009 he won his third Challenger title in Seoul and was able to finish a year in the top 100 for the first time.

In January 2010 Lacko was directly qualified for the Australian Open and was able to win a Grand Slam match for the first time against the Argentinian Leonardo Mayer . In the second round, however, he had no chance against world number two Rafael Nadal . From now on Lacko played almost only ATP tournaments and was able to reach the quarter-finals in Chennai , Zagreb , Memphis and Halle . At the French Open , he won an almost five-hour match against the American Michael Yani , but then dropped out against Michail Juschny . In Wimbledon he was able to defeat a player from the top 50 for the first time with Marcos Baghdatis , but then lost again in the second round in a five-set match against the French Jérémy Chardy . In doubles he reached the round of 16 alongside Serhiy Stachowskyj . In the second round they defeated the pairing Lukáš Dlouhý and Leander Paes, who were in 3rd place . In the following American hard court season, Lacko and Stachowskyj could each reach the third round in Atlanta and New Haven . They defeated among others the top 30 players Lleyton Hewitt and Thomaz Bellucci . In his US Open debut, however, he had no chance against Andy Murray in the first round . At the end of the year Lacko was able to reach another Challenger final in Ortisei in Val Gardena , which he lost to Michał Przysiężny .

At the beginning of 2011, Lukáš Lacko was able to win the second set 6-0 in the second round of the ATP tournament in Doha against world number one Rafael Nadal , but he ultimately lost the match in three sets. At the Australian Open , he met a favorite again with Roger Federer , against whom he had no chance. Lacko won two Challenger tournaments in 2011, in Izmir in September and at home in Bratislava in November .

At the Australian Open 2012 Lacko was initially able to qualify for the main field. In the first round he defeated the favored Ivan Ljubičić in five sets despite a 2-0 deficit . This was followed by another win against Donald Young before he lost to the eventual finalist Rafael Nadal in the third round. In February 2012 he reached his first ATP final in Zagreb , which he lost to Mikhail Juschny .
