German players at the Australian Open

  • Dieter Kindlmann : The man from Sonthofen made it to the first round through qualification. There Kindlmann met the former tournament winner Andre Agassi , against whom he lost 4: 6, 3: 6, 0: 6 without a chance.
  • Rainer Schüttler : In the first round, the Korbacher met Frenchman Olivier Patience , who started the tournament as a qualifier. Schüttler won 7: 6, 6: 3, 6: 2. In the second lap, Andre Agassi, who was seeded in 8th position, had a difficult draw. After compatriot Kindlmann had already lost to Agassi, Schüttler was also clearly defeated 3: 6, 1: 6, 0: 6.
  • Björn Phau : The man from Darmstadt , who came into the main field as a lucky loser , landed a big surprise with a win over the Spaniard Albert Costa . Phau won 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.
  • Nicolas Kiefer : The Holzmindenener was seeded at 21st and met the Belgian Olivier Rochus in the first round , against whom he surprisingly lost 5: 7, 6: 2, 6: 3, 2: 6, 3: 6 after a tough fight.
  • Tommy Haas : The man from Hamburg was the best seeded German player in 16th place. Like Kiefer, he met a Belgian; Haas easily defeated Xavier Malisse 6: 3, 6: 2, 6: 3. In round two he met the Slovak Karol Beck , against whom he surprisingly lost in five sets 7: 5, 6: 2, 2: 6, 6: 7, 3: 6 after he had already led with 2: 0 sets .
  • Lars Burgsmüller : The Mülheimer met Russian Igor Andrejew in the first round , against whom he clearly lost 6: 7, 1: 6, 2: 6.
  • Florian Mayer : The Bayreuth was faced with an almost impossible task against the American James Blake and Mayer lost 1: 6, 2: 6, 0: 6 without a chance.
  • Philipp Kohlschreiber : The Augsburg man should become the most successful German tournament player. First, in round one he met the Dane Kenneth Carlsen , against whom he surprisingly won 7: 6, 6: 2, 6: 1. In the second round he didn't have to give up a single game; he benefited from the abandonment of the Chilean Nicolás Massú and won 6-0, 2-0. In round three he defeated French Jean-René Lisnard 7: 5, 6: 3, 6: 2 again surprisingly clear. As the only German player in the second round, Kohlschreiber met the second seeded American Andy Roddick , against whom he had no chance and lost 3: 6, 6: 7, 1: 6.
