The 59th Australian Open in 1971 was a Grand Slam tennis grass court tournament hosted by the ILTF . It took place January 8-14 in Sydney , Australia .

The defending champions in the singles were Arthur Ashe for the men and Margaret Court for the women. In the men's doubles Bob Lutz and Stan Smith were the defending champions , in the women's doubles Margaret Court and Judy Dalton .

Ladies singles

For Court it was the 10th Grand Slam success at the Australian Open and her 21st Grand Slam title of her career. After a bye in the first round, Court won 6-1, 6-1 against Patricia Coleman in the round of 16 . In the quarter-finals she beat Helen Gourlay, who was seeded at position # 8, 6: 4 and 6: 0. In the semi-finals, too, she retained her dominance and won in two straight sets 6-0 and 6-3 against Lesley Hunt . Only in the final did she encounter more resistance, which she was able to win against Evonne Goolagong with 2: 6, 7: 6 and 7: 5.
