German men at the Australian Open

Rainer Schüttler

  • The Korbacher started as a seeded player (position 31). In the first round he had no problem with the Spaniard Albert Portas and won 6: 3, 6: 2, 6: 0.
  • In round two there was a tougher opponent, the experienced Dutchman Richard Krajicek , but Schüttler won 6: 3, 7: 5, 6: 4.
  • In the third round, one of the top favorites, Marat Safin, who was ranked third, would have waited to win the tournament; but Safin could not start due to injury and Schüttler was in the last sixteen.
  • There Schüttler met the 23 seeded American James Blake ; Schüttler was able to prevail in four sets with 6: 3, 6: 4, 1: 6 and 6: 3.
  • Getting into the quarterfinals was a huge success for Schüttler; with opponent David Nalbandian (placed at 10) now seemed to be the end, but Schüttler played the match of his life and won in an impressive manner 6: 3, 5: 7, 6: 1, 6: 0.
  • In the semifinals, Andy Roddick , the next US American, was in 9th place; Schüttler was able to shine again and thus throw the second top 10 player out of the running. He won 7: 5, 2: 6, 6: 3, 6: 3 again in four sets.
  • Schüttler was completely surprising in the final of the Australian Open. But there he had no chance against Andre Agassi, who was in second place ; he clearly lost 2: 6, 2: 6, 1: 6. Still, it was the greatest success in Schüttler's career.

Lars Burgsmüller

  • The Mülheimer met the Spaniard Juan Balcells on lap one . Burgsmüller won with a surprisingly smooth 6: 4, 7: 5, 7: 5.
  • In round two there was a real hurdle with Roger Federer, who was seeded at 6th, and Burgsmüller lost 3: 6, 0: 6 and 3: 6.

Alexander Waske

  • Waske came through the qualification in the first main round and met there on the Croatian Mario Ančić . The Frankfurt player had chances, but lost 3: 6, 4: 6, 6: 7.

Bjorn Phau

  • The Darmstadt came as Waske as a qualifier in the first round, where he on the set of 28 Frenchmen Fabrice Santoro met. Phau lost 4: 6, 3: 6, 4: 6.

David Prinosil

  • The native Czech Prinosil was the third German qualifier in the first main round. He met the top 10 player Albert Costa from Spain (number 8), against whom he could keep up, but in the end lost 4: 6, 1: 6, 6: 3, 6: 7.

German women at the Australian Open

Martina Muller

Angelika Roesch

  • The Berliner had to compete in the first round against Tatjana Panowa from Russia . Roesch kept up well, but finally lost in three sets 6: 7, 6: 3, 2: 6.

Barbara Rittner

  • The Krefeld woman competed against local hero Evie Dominikovic in the first main round . In a relatively even match, Rittner lost in three sets with 5: 7, 6: 4, 4: 6.

Marlene Weingärtner

  • Weingärtner had a very difficult lot with the number 3 seeded defending champion Jennifer Capriati . After clearly losing the first set, Weingärtner created the sensation and surprisingly won 2: 6, 7: 6, 6: 4.
  • After that, Weingärtner had to face the French Stéphanie Foretz in round two . Weingärtner had to go over three sets again and she won again, this time with 3: 6, 6: 1, 6: 2.
  • The surprisingly strong Heidelberg met the Spaniard Virginia Ruano Pascual on lap three . Weingärtner lost their third game of three in a row with 1: 6, 6: 4, 4: 6.

Greta Arn

  • The Hungarian-born Arn competed in the first round against the unset Russian Nadeschda Petrowa , against whom she had no chance at 2: 6, 1: 6.

Anca Barna

  • The Nuremberg woman played in round one against the Italian Francesca Schiavone , against whom she surprisingly won 5: 7, 6: 1, 6: 3.
  • Following Weingärtner into the second round, Barna met the 27th seeded US American Lisa Raymond . Again Barna was able to prevail, this time very clearly with 6: 3 and 6: 1.
  • In the third round she played against none other than the world number two Venus Williams ; against the future finalist she had no chance and lost with 1: 6, 4: 6.
