Angelika Roesch (born June 8, 1977 in Berlin ) is a former German tennis player .

biography

Angelika Roesch started playing tennis at the age of seven. She is actually left-handed , but she plays tennis with her right.

She has won five singles titles in her career at the ITF Women's Circuit , the last in September 2008 at the $ 25,000 event in Lecce , Italy, by beating Mervana Jugic-Salkic in the final . In doubles, she triumphed in six ITF tournaments, most recently in 2006 at the side of Julija Bejhelsymer on Fuerteventura .

On the WTA Tour Roesch reached the quarter-finals in Québec in 2002 and in Hobart in 2003 , in doubles she made it to the finals alongside Lubomira Bacheva in Palermo in 2002, but were subject to a team from Russia. In 2003 she also reached the semi-finals in doubles in Budapest and Québec, as well as in 2004 in Hasselt, Belgium, alongside the Italian Maria Elena Camerin .

1995 to 2000

In 1995 she played for the first time in tournaments on the WTA Tour. On her debut in Berlin, she lost in the first round. In her first year, however, Roesch won an ITF tournament in São Paulo with a 6: 1, 5: 7, 6: 2 final victory over Sabine Haas , the sister of Tommy Haas . She finished her first year in eight tournaments in position 536. In 1996 she officially became a professional player. She won her second ITF title in September 1998 in Hechingen .

2001

In 2001, after several successful ITF tournaments, Roesch was among the top 150 in the world rankings for the first time at the end of the year. She won an ITF tournament in Verona (final against Zuzana Kucova; in the quarter-finals she was able to prevail over Dally Randriantefy from Madagascar , who was seeded 1 ), and she reached the final in two other, better-funded ITF tournaments.

2002

In 2002 she was particularly noticeable for her three successes over Jelena Dementjewa , who was already in the top 20 of the world rankings. In June 2002 Roesch was in the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time. In 2002 she also reached the quarter-finals at the WTA tournament in Québec, where she was able to beat Dementjewa again in the second round and only failed to Jelena Bowina . At the WTA tournament in New Haven , she reached the second round as a qualifier after four victories over players from the top 100, when she again defeated Dementjewa before losing to Laura Granville from the USA. Also at the WTA tournament in Berlin, where she made it into the main field through qualification, she was eliminated after another win over Dementjewa in the second round. In Grand Slam tournaments Roesch reached the third qualifying round twice, in Wimbledon and at the US Open she was eliminated in the main draw in round one; in the second round of Wimbledon she would have met the then world number one Venus Williams , but Roesch lost in round one to Virginia Ruano-Pascual . In total, she survived the opening round in 22 of 30 tournaments in 2002 and had 37 wins.

Roesch ended her most successful year to date in 80th position. On February 24, 2003 she achieved her best ranking in the WTA world rankings with 69th place and on March 17, 2003 with 107th position, her best placement in the doubles competition.

2003

In spring 2003 Roesch was not nominated for the Fed Cup against Slovakia despite her rise in the world rankings and as number two in Germany at the time . In the next game in 2003 against Indonesia , she was used in the already meaningless doubles at Vanessa Henke's side for the first and only time in the Fed Cup. In January 2003, she reached the quarter-finals in Hobart, but lost to the American Amy Frazier . At the WTA tournament in Antwerp , she was in the second round after beating Magui Serna . In the following week she almost beat another top player in Memphis , Amanda Coetzer , but apparently (as often in her career) she failed on her nerves at 6: 2, 6: 7, 1: 6. In 2003, Roesch played her last match in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament. At the US Open , as in all other Grand Slam tournaments this year, she lost to Paola Suárez from Argentina in the first round .

2004

Her last victory for the time being in the main draw of a WTA tournament was Roesch in Indian Wells . She beat Austrian Sybille Bammer in two sets in the first round before losing to Kim Clijsters . Shortly before, she came into the main field in Acapulco , but lost to her feared opponent Iveta Benešová . In the same year she reached the semi-finals at the ITF tournament in Bergamo after she had given the Ukrainian Aljona Bondarenko 6: 1, 6: 2 no chance in the quarter-finals .

2007

In Berlin, Roesch played for the last time in the main draw of a WTA tournament. After surviving the qualification she was eliminated in two sets despite a 5-1 lead in the first set against Sybille Bammer. On the way to the main draw, she defeated u. a. the Czech Eva Birnerová . In 2007 Roesch beat a player from the top 100 for the last time, in the first qualifying round of the WTA tournament in San Diego she defeated Bethanie Mattek from the USA.

In 2007 Roesch won the ITF tournament in Bari as a qualifier with a final victory over Giulia Gabba and returned to the top 200 in the world rankings after she had also reached the final at the ITF tournament in Grado , where she beat Belarusian Darya Kustava it had prevailed at the beginning of the year, was defeated in three sentences; previously she had the world number 115. Youlia Fedossova defeated 6: 7, 6: 0, 6: 1. Furthermore, she reached the quarter-finals of the $ 50,000 event in Saguenay in 2007 , losing to Aleksandra Wozniak there - as well as in Zlín , Czech Republic , where she was defeated by the Czech Petra Kvitová in three sets, after previously beating Viktorija Kutusowa from Ukraine 6-2, 7: 6 prevailed. At the US Open she took part in a qualification for a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in three years, but was defeated in two sets by Varvara Lepchenko from the USA. As is so often the case, she complained about motivation problems beforehand. In 18 of her 28 tournaments she survived the opening round and came up with a total of 37 wins.

2008

At the beginning of the year Roesch competed in the qualification at the Australian Open , but lost to Barbora Záhlavová-Strýcová in the first round 6: 7, 4: 6. At the WTA tournament in Paris she reached the second round of qualification, in Antwerp she failed in the opening match, and she reached the second round at two other ITF events. From February, she had to take a seven-month break due to an injury. On her comeback at the end of September, she reached the semi-finals as a qualifier at the $ 50,000 tournament in Mestre - she defeated there a. a. Nastassja Jakimawa 6: 4, 6: 2 - and won her last title in Lecce a week later . At the $ 100,000 tournament in Taipei, she lost to Italian Corinna Dentoni 6: 7, 6: 7 after a smooth opening win over German Vanessa Henke in round two . The 2008 season ended Roesch with a defeat in the first round of the $ 50,000 ITF tournament in Calcutta .

Since 2009

The year 2009 started modestly again for Roesch. She could not win a match up to and including the French Open , where she was eliminated against the seeded Jewgenija Rodina again in the first qualifying round. After seven opening failures, she reached the second round at the $ 25,000 tournament in Szczecin . After qualifying at a tournament in Italy, she reached the semifinals of the $ 25,000 ITF tournament in Stuttgart. On her way there she hit u. a. the top seed Kathrin Wörle and defending champion Stephanie Gehrlein in two straight sentences. Roesch then had to give up the semifinals in the second set. The following week she retired in Zagreb again in the opening round. She reached the quarterfinals in another $ 25,000 tournament in Italy. In 2010, Roesch defeated Georgian Margalita Chakhnashvili (at the 200th position in the world rankings) in two sets in the opening match of the qualification at the WTA tournament in Budapest , but was eliminated in the next round. At the $ 25,000 tournament in Versmold , she could also win a round. Her last appearance was at an ITF tournament in Ciampino, Italy, where she made it to the semi-finals in doubles.

After retiring from professional sport, Roesch took over a tennis school in Oberkirch, Baden .
