Geographical location

Versmold is located in the Ems sand plain on the border between the Münsterland and East Westphalia in the Münsterland bay south of the Teutoburg Forest . The urban area is characterized by the lack of special elevations and valleys that are 100  m above sea level. NN highest elevation is in the immediate vicinity of junction 15 (Borgholzhausen) of the A33 , the lowest point ( 59  m above sea level ) is southwest of Peckeloh, where the Hessel leaves the city. The 52nd parallel cuts the urban area in the southern area. The next larger cities are Gütersloh , 26 km away, Bielefeld and Osnabrück , both 32 km away, and Münster , 46 km away.

geology

Geothermal map of Versmold

In the deeper subsoil there are clay and sandstones of a coal mountain ( Upper Carboniferous ), which leads to seams . These are covered by an up to 1700 m thick overburden made of marl stones over limestone from the Middle Ages ( chalk ). The solid rock is completely covered by up to 30 m thick loose rock from the Ice Age ( Quaternary ). The north and east of Versmold are largely part of a ground moraine from the Saale Cold Age . In the south of Versmold there are sandy and silty deposits from the Vistula glaciation . In the floodplain of the Hessel there are young humus sands and clayey silts and occasional fens peat . The clay deposits were previously used as raw material for the local brick industry. The fine and medium sand deposits were removed for the production of sand-lime bricks or for use as road construction material.

Versmold is well to very well suited for the use of geothermal heat sources by means of a geothermal probe and heat recovery through heat pump heating (see the map above).

Expansion and use of the urban area

The city covers an area of 85.42 km². The predominant part consists of agricultural area and forest area, together around 78.9%, followed by built-up area and traffic area, together around 15.2%. climate

Precipitation diagram

Versmold belongs to the temperate climate zone of Central Europe. It is in the range of the sub-Atlantic maritime climate. The winters are mostly mild under the influence of the Atlantic and the summers are moderately warm. For the climate in the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region, to which Versmold belongs, see also the article Climate in Ostwestfalen-Lippe .

Due to the location in the sub-Atlantic maritime climate, a humid climate prevails all year round with relatively evenly distributed rainfall. In total, the Versmold measuring station has a long-term average of 767 mm of precipitation per year. This means that more precipitation falls than the German mean (700 mm), but significantly less precipitation than from the measuring station in a north-easterly direction. Due to the rain catching effect of the Teutoburg Forest, up to 1,200 mm of precipitation per year fall there due to incline rain . Versmold is located in the Westphalian Bay, which is relatively warm in comparison to East Westphalia. The annual mean temperature is around 9–9.5 ° C.

history

Versmold was first mentioned as a parish in 1096, making it one of the oldest settlements in the region.

Due to its location between the dioceses of Osnabrück and Münster , Versmold was the subject of disputes between the bishops of these dioceses over long periods of the High Middle Ages . The population tried to protect themselves against it as well as possible, the St. Petrikirche was built as a fortified church.

This only ended after the Counts of Ravensberg were able to secure rule over the Versmold area in 1277 . They made the no longer existing Gut Caldenhof their hunting seat. This made Versmold a buffer zone between the above-mentioned dioceses. The so formed border with the Diocese of Osnabrück still represents the state border between North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony. As part of the County of Ravensberg, Versmold fell to Brandenburg-Prussia in 1614 .

Versmold received in 1719 by the Prussian king I. Friedrich Wilhelm town charter . As a result, linen traders settled and the town quickly developed into a trading center for linen weaving and yarn spinning, which had long been widespread in the region. In particular, canvas was made. Canvas manufacture and trade flourished until the mid-19th century when it was increasingly displaced from England by machine-woven cotton. As a result, a profound structural change took place with the switch to the production of meat products, which had been practiced from time immemorial, especially in the form of pig fattening in the rural tradition. The Versmold area was particularly suitable for fattening pigs, as there are many barren areas that hardly allow agricultural use. Therefore the pigs were driven by the farmers into the woods, where they ate acorns and beechnuts in particular. This food made the meat particularly robust, which quickly led to an increasing demand for ham, sausages and bacon. At the end of the 19th century, the industrialization of meat processing on the farms slowly began and the livestock multiplied. What is unusual is that this process developed on the farms, so that the farm became more and more of a factory.

In the course of the associated stronger division of labor, specialized companies such as slaughterhouses, sausage manufacturers, the packaging industry and shipping companies gradually emerged in the 20th century.

religion

Evangelical parish church of St. Petri
Kantorhaus to St. Petri

Since the upheaval caused by the Reformation in the 16th century, which gradually took hold in Ravensberg and thus also in Versmold, the population of Versmold, as in the entire former old district of Halle , has predominantly belonged to the Evangelical Lutheran denomination. All Protestant churches belong to the parish of Halle , the Catholic ones to the deanery Rietberg-Wiedenbrück. According to the 2011 census, the Evangelical Lutheran Church had 13510 members and the Catholic Church 2860 members of Versmold; which corresponds roughly to the ratio 5/1. This is exactly diametrical in the neighboring town of Sassenberg , where at the same time 2,970 Protestants were counted to 8,230 Catholics, which corresponds to roughly the ratio 1/3. This still shows the border between the Prussian-ruled county of Ravensberg and the prince-bishop-ruled Hochstift Münster , where the respective sovereign could determine the religion according to the Augsburg imperial and religious peace : Cuius regio, eius religio .

Incorporations

Before 1973, Bockhorst , Hesselteich, Loxten, Oesterweg and Peckeloh as well as the city of Versmold were six municipalities of the Versmold office . The municipality of Peckeloh bordered the city of Versmold. On April 1, 1960, there was a border adjustment at the then municipality and city limits, which separated the city of Versmold from the municipality of Peckeloh. During this border adjustment, inhabited areas also changed their affiliation to the municipality of Peckeloh or the city of Versmold. The size of the then urban area of Versmold was reduced by about three hectares, the municipality of Peckeloh gained three hectares.

As part of the North Rhine-Westphalian regional reform , the city of Versmold was merged with the municipalities of Bockhorst, Hesselteich, Loxten, Oesterweg and Peckeloh from the Versmold district to form the new city of Versmold on January 1, 1973 in the course of implementing the Bielefeld Act . The Versmold office was dissolved, the legal successor is the city of Versmold.

Population development

music

First and foremost are the Christophorus Youth Chamber Choir, which was founded in 1979 by Hans-Ulrich Henning and received national and international first prizes, has conducted international concert tours and has published various recordings, as well as the musical branch of the CJD high school with vocal area and orchestral school. Church music at the Petrikirche is an equally important cultural factor with regular concert activity in the field of choir, wind and organ music. Among the traditional music associations, the Oesterweg fire brigade music train deserves a mention, which celebrated its centenary in 2002.

Buildings

The Protestant parish church of St. Petri was first mentioned in 1096. The current church was originally a single nave, dedicated to St. Michael, the 13th century vault building, which was later converted into a two-aisled late Gothic hall church with a three-sided choir. It was restored after a fire in 1683. The half-timbered east gable dates from this time. As part of a renovation carried out after 1902, the transverse gable roofs were created. During this time, the Romanesque west tower with the Gothic stepped gables received its new copper dome. The remains of late Gothic vault paintings have been preserved inside. The furnishings include a pulpit from the beginning of the 18th century and a font marked in 1772 . One chandelier is marked 1681. The church has a cantor's house that was built between 1806 and 1808 after the former cantor's house fell victim to a fire in 1804. In 1912 Gottfried Möllenstedt, later rector of the University of Tübingen, was born in this house.

The Mairie , the former mayor's house, is a two-storey classical plastered building with a crooked hip roof . It was built in 1805 for Mayor Anton Daniel Delius (1762–1826) and is now used as a café.

After the renovation of the town center, only a few half-timbered houses have been preserved. The oldest is the Oldermannsche Haus located at Münsterstrasse 7 not far from the church , the gable of which protrudes twice over Knaggen . It is designated 1602 and serves as a commercial building. Two more half-timbered buildings can be found in Ravensberger Straße. No. 7 , a two-storey gabled house with a half-hip roof , was built in 1789 by Anton Friedrich Delius. It served as a pharmacy for a long time. The neighboring house No. 9 was built towards the end of the 18th century and is also provided with a half-hip roof. Both buildings have recently been expanded into a café.

Versmold has other secular buildings of great cultural and historical value . The Wissmannshof in the center of the village on Berliner Straße is a very well-preserved half-timbered property with a courtyard building and granary from 1750. The Kavenstroth house is a courtyard that has now been converted into an urban meeting center. In the building complex of the local history museum there is a restored Heuerlingshaus , in which the local history association maintains a collection on the history of house slaughter and industrial meat processing. The museum complex is also enriched by a bakery that is regularly put into operation. A café, a carriage shed with antique farm equipment and a forge built according to historical models complete the complex.

Parks

Rules of conduct in the city park - German and Low German

Versmold has had a city park since 1901 . Beginning in 1843, it was laid out as a private facility by the Delius family of manufacturers on an island formed from the Aabach and a branched off flood. The purchase price of 20,000 Reichsmarks was raised by the city of Versmold and several associations and citizens.

Bust of Kaiser Wilhelm I.

The 7 hectare site now has two large lawns with individual trees. A feather beech and a tulip tree are still present as noteworthy botanical rarities from the time of its creation . There is also a dense woody plantation with native tree and shrub species, evergreen rhododendrons, as well as ornamental beds and a rose bed. Among other things, there is also a sequoia tree planted by the Delius family. In the northern part the character of a high forest with oaks and beeches has been preserved.

A pavilion, originally the garden house of the Delius family, and a neoclassical vestibule added in 1913 are the focus of a beer garden. One monument each to Bismarck and Kaiser Wilhelm I are set up in the park, but today they are hidden in closed woody plantations.

Nature reserves and natural monuments

About this picture
Versmolder break

The south facing Versmold Versmolder fraction consisting of sparse alder - carr between the meadow areas of the rivers Aa , new and old Hessel is is mentioned in the 13th century. The black alder is predominant, but there are also hybrid poplars , which actually do not belong in this area, are often damaged and are therefore often used by woodpeckers to build their burrows. With 240 hectares, the area is the third largest wetland protection area in the Gütersloh district and is almost entirely owned by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. While large parts of the break used to be under water from autumn to the end of spring, the straightening and deepening of the streams led to a drainage of large areas. Deforestation following the drainage, especially between the 16th and 18th centuries, shaped today's meadow landscape. The conversion to arable land gives the landscape in the area surrounding today's nature reserve a significantly different character. Hedges and field trees in the Oesterweg part of the quarry still ensure a richly structured landscape today.

In the north of the city, Versmold has a share in the Salzenteichs Heide nature reserve , which serves to preserve the beauty of a park landscape in the East Munsterland .

3.26% of the urban area of Versmold are under nature protection.

Sports

The city's sports clubs are united in the Versmold Sports Association. The club became known for its handball department , which played in the 2nd Bundesliga in the 1992/93 season . In addition to popular sports, there are offers for tennis and riding, for example. In Versmold, the ITF Versmold is an international tennis tournament. The organizer is the Tennispark Versmold association .

Regular events

Highlights in Versmold's social life are the spring fair “St. Petri Market”, popularly known as Sünne Peider , and the “City Festival Versmold”, which offers music, cabaret and fair on the fourth weekend in August, and the shooting festival, which takes place on the first weekend in July. On the second weekend in July, the traditional outdoor pool party takes place in the municipal outdoor pool. In the Bockhorst district, the “Asparagus Market” held at the end of May has also established itself as a visitor magnet. In addition, the Christmas market always takes place on the church forecourt on the third weekend in Advent.

Culinary specialties

The Versmold meat and sausage products are known and loved throughout Germany and Europe. Examples are the Versmolder ham , Bockhorster knackwurst, sausage bread and the Advent pate.

Economy and Infrastructure

traffic

Haltpunkt Niedick - one of the two former passenger stops in the city area

Versmold has good transport connections with the federal motorway 33 , especially to the north. In a south-westerly direction, the neighboring district of Warendorf and the Münster regional center can be reached via federal road 476 .

Regional buses go to Gütersloh , Halle (Westf.) , Borgholzhausen and Warendorf ( dial-a-bus ). Versmold belongs to the tariff association “Der Sechser” ( OWL Verkehr GmbH in the Westphalian tariff ). The bus routes from Versmold to Halle and Borgholzhausen have train connections to Bielefeld and Osnabrück . In addition, the Osnabrück Transport Association operates a bus route from Versmold to Bad Rothenfelde in the Osnabrück district at the VOS tariff .

Versmold station on the Ibbenbüren – Hövelhof line of the Teutoburg Forest Railway (TWE), which opened in 1900, has been without local rail passenger transport (SPNV) since 1977 , but individual service trips to sidings take place during the week . On certain dates, the Teuto-Express, a historic passenger train , runs here on the museum railroad . There have been plans for several years to reactivate the local rail transport between Gütersloh or Verl and the neighboring Harsewinkel, a later extension to Versmold is open and little has happened since the start of the discussion in 2010.

Since September 2011 the tracks to Lengerich have been interrupted by a dam slide. Since the damage to the route is not being repaired by the new TWE owner Captrain Deutschland , the “Action Alliance for TWE” was founded in January 2012 in the neighboring town of Bad Laer . a. has set the goal of long-term maintenance and regular use of the Teutoburg Forest Railway in the areas of leisure and tourism traffic.

Economic history

Versmold's economy has seen several phases of restructuring since the 19th century. At the beginning of the 19th century, most of the residents lived on subsistence farms . Many families emigrated to America in the 1850s and 1860s . Others went to Holland seasonally at harvest time. In the second half of the 19th century, a home-based linen industry developed . With the establishment of the German Empire in 1871, this industry gained in importance and with it the company Conrad Wilhelm Delius & Co , which u. a. Manufactured sailcloth for the Imperial Navy and had representative offices in Hamburg and Berlin. Today's city park was once owned by this rich bourgeois family.

After the Second World War , the economy diversified. Several meat processing companies developed from the in-house butchery. Supplier companies also emerged. Until a few years ago, the large meat processing companies also included the special production of small, often one-man operations in their program. This independent East Westphalian profession, which grew out of the house slaughterhouse, was called the small meat trader . With the upswing of the food industry in Versmold, the need for transport capacities also grew, which benefited the shipping companies.

A shoe factory was also built by the Versmold entrepreneur Gustav Baumhoefer in the 1950s , which produced shoes under the brand name Ravensberger . As part of the global restructuring of shoe production, the factory was closed in 1982.

The variety of industry after the Second World War also included the Wirus works in the woodworking sector, which manufactured standard frames. This factory also ceased production in the 1990s.

media

The daily newspapers from Monday to Saturday are the Haller Kreisblatt , which cooperates with the Neue Westfälische and gets its cover from it , as well as the Versmolder Anzeiger , a local edition of the Westfalen-Blatt . Both have their own editorial team on site.

In the radio sector, the local broadcaster Radio Gütersloh reports on Versmold.
