history

Sünne Peider goes back to the parish festival of the St. Petri Church in Versmold

The first documented mention of Sünne Peider was in 1704 in the designation of the annual markets for Versmold, which King Friedrich I. had issued. There the market day was set for February 22nd. As early as the 17th century, the Brüggenmarkt for Versmold on the first Friday after Ascension Day and the stubble market on the Saturday before the birth of the Virgin Mary are occupied. The name of the fair goes back to the parish festival of St. Petri in Versmold, whose patronage is the Petri chair celebration on February 22nd. The church was mentioned for the first time in 1096, so it can be assumed that there was a parish festival as early as the Middle Ages.

Sautmann assumes that after the Thirty Years' War the fair developed into a market. In Versmold, livestock was largely traded. For 1822 only a few cattle are recorded in Versmold, so that the supply can be assumed to be rather small. In the 19th century, livestock increased so that a larger market could develop. In 1883 250 horses, 120 cows and 50 wagons with piglets were traded. Four years later there were 151 horses, 91 cows, 88 pigs and 20 wagons with piglets. A year later, however, the trade collapsed to 81 horses, 40 cows and 31 wagon piglets.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the number of livestock increased again. The population in Versmold in 1900 was 5667 head of cattle and 8,313 pigs. In 1913, 8,095 cattle and 27,251 pigs could be counted. This also increased the cattle market to 100 horses, 200 cattle and 500 pigs. By 1936 the livestock market lost its importance and 99 horses, 75 cattle and 272 piglets were sold.

Thanks to the connection between the city of Versmold and the Teutoburg Forest Railway , the first guests from Gütersloh arrived at the fair in the morning. In 1936 three carousels , a Ferris wheel and four shooting galleries could be counted. Due to the turmoil of the Second World War, Sünne Peider was initially out of action and could be used again for the first time in 1949. In the 1950s, the meat industry continued to grow, especially in Versmold. The meat trade no longer required stationary annual markets, but traded all year round.

In 1971 there was for the first time no cattle market at Sünne Peider and the focus was on pure funfair operations. In 2012 about 100,000 visitors visited the fair with around 200 rides.

The dates have been postponed to March since 2016 due to the carnival. In 2020 and 2022 there will be another collision with the carnival.
