On the sea route to Mexico his ship capsized and Delius was stuck on a small island for a few weeks. In January 1828, the castaways were picked up by a Spanish schooner and brought ashore, from where Delius could drive to his destination Tampico .

In Mexico he became a partner in the English firm Davis & Co. He earned so much money that he returned to Versmold in 1840. After Anton Heinrich, other brothers and cousins worked in Mexico. There he planted a Douglas fir there in 1843 , which he had brought back from his honeymoon. Other park trees such as the tulip tree , feather beech , sequoia or copper beech followed later . The site was later bought by the city and today forms the city park of Versmold.
