Conrad Wilhelm Delius (born September 7, 1807 in Versmold ; † August 16, 1897 in Versmold) was a German textile entrepreneur.

Life

His father was the merchant and postmaster Johann Daniel Delius (1772-1837), his mother was Caroline Delius, née Hertel.

In 1828 Delius and Daniel Haßfordt founded the company Conrad Wilhelm Delius & Co. in Versmold. At first the company was purely a trading company that bought sailcloths and linen and sold them to Holland and later especially to North America .

Since 1837, the company began producing, initially were yarns made with predominantly female workforce; In 1840 he built a "factory premises" with a spinning mill in Versmold, which was mechanized in 1844. In addition, proto-industrial production in the home-business publishing system remained . The latter was increasingly relocated to the area of the Kingdom of Hanover in order to avoid the customs duties in the German Customs Union . Delius had improved linen production so much that it could not only be used as sackcloth or packing linen, but also as sailcloth. The cloths from Versmold and the surrounding area were sold under the name eagle or delius cloth. Customers were also the Prussian and Spanish navies.

From 1841 to 1846 the company was called Anton Heinrich Delius & Conrad Wilhelm Delius & Co. because of a new partner, then again until 1907 Conrad Wilhelm Delius & Co.

Due to the demand for goods from Delius, large parts of the Halle (Westf.) District were spared the crisis in the domestic textile industry from the 1830s. In the crisis years between 1845 and 1847, Delius used a large part of his fortune to buy bread grain for the benefit of his employees, without making any profit from the sale.

From the 1850s onwards, the importance of the home trade continued to decline. The son Heinrich Delius founded a mechanical spinning and weaving mill in Versmold.

As a result of the customs borders, the company's exports continued to decline after the establishment of the German Empire . Domestic business became more important.

Delius was a district deputy. In 1851 he was a participant in the Provincial Parliament of the Province of Westphalia . He had been elected as deputy in the state of the cities for the constituency Minden-Ravensberg for the other cities. He was also elected as deputy in 1847 for the United State Parliament and in 1848 for the Frankfurt National Assembly, where he did not take part.

Conrad Wilhelm Delius was appointed to the council of commerce because of his services to commercial development .
