history

In 1786 George Taylor and Alexander Milne founded today's distillery under the name Milltown or Milton , which was taken over by William Longmore in 1830. In the 1870s it was renamed Strathisla . Around six years later, a fire broke out and damaged large parts of the distillery. This was renamed Milton in 1890 .

George Jay Pomeroy, owner of the distillery in 1949, was sent to jail for tax evasion, endangering the distillery's very existence. Chivas Brothers Ltd. took over the distillery after an auction and called it Strathisla again . In 1965 two more were added to the two stills .

In 1995 it was taken over by the Pernod Ricard Group.

Barrel storage

The water comes from the Broomhill Spring near the distillery. The distillery has a mash tun (4.84 tonnes) made of stainless steel and eleven fermentation tanks (24,500 liters each) made of Douglas fir . The whiskey is distilled in two wash stills , each followed by a spirit still . For storage are Sherry - and Bourbon barrels used.

Products

  • A single malt that has matured for twelve years is the distillery's main product. It is also available in maturity levels of 8, 18 and 21 years.
  • Several special bottlings, some of which are not made directly by the distillery, for example the 25-year-old Strathisla, which is bottled by Gordon & MacPhail.
  • A blend called Chivas Regal , which makes up another large part of the production.

Trivia

On June 15, 1993, a black and white cat was found in a shipment of Bourbon barrels from Kentucky. She was christened Dizzy because she stumbled into the fresh air after opening the shipping container. The reason for this was probably the malnutrition after the four-week trip and, not least, the bourbon fumes that escaped the barrels. After six months of quarantine, Dizzy was hired as a mouse catcher at Chivas Brothers.
