Thorsten Klute

Thorsten Klute (born January 31, 1974 in Versmold ) is a German politician. From 2004 to 2013 he was mayor of the city of Versmold. Between 2010 and 2016 Thorsten Klute was a member of the board of the SPD North Rhine-Westphalia . From 2013 to 2017 he was State Secretary for Integration in the Ministry of Labor, Integration and Social Affairs of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. Thorsten Klute is married and has two daughters.

Vita

After graduating from the CJD high school in Versmold and doing civil service in the mobile geriatric care of the Diakonie, Thorsten Klute studied law at Bielefeld University and during this time learned Polish at a private school in Cracow. After passing the first state examination in law, Klute first completed a legal master’s degree on the eastward expansion of the European Union at the TU Dresden, then took the second state examination and then worked as a lawyer.

In 2004 Thorsten Klute was elected mayor of the East Westphalian city of Versmold. At that time he won the direct election against the incumbent with 57.7 percent of the votes cast. When he was re-elected in 2009, Klute received 78.3 percent of the vote. On December 17th, 2013 Thorsten Klute resigned from the mayor's office and moved to the North Rhine-Westphalian state government.

From 2010 to 2016 Thorsten Klute was a member of the state executive committee of the SPD in North Rhine-Westphalia. From 2012 to 2014 he was deputy chairman of the NRWSPD. In September 2014 he no longer ran for this office, but has been a member of the Presidium of the NRWSPD until 2016. He was also a member of the SPD in North Rhine-Westphalia.

In 2010, Thorsten Klute took part in the municipal work group and in 2012 in the business, energy, climate and regional planning work group in the coalition negotiations for the formation of the red-green state governments of Prime Minister Hannelore Kraft in North Rhine-Westphalia. Klute was deputy chairman of the SPD North Rhine-Westphalia from 2012 to 2014 .

On December 17, 2013, NRW Prime Minister Hannelore Kraft appointed Thorsten Klute State Secretary for Integration in the Ministry of Labor, Integration and Social Affairs of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. He held this office until June 30, 2017, when the state government of Hannelore Kraft was replaced by the newly formed cabinet of Armin Laschet.

In July 2016, Thorsten Klute took part in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) at the invitation of the US State Department .

Poland

Thorsten Klute speaks Polish and is involved in German-Polish relations. Together with the Marshal of the Lubes Region, Ms. Elżbieta Polak, he was chairman of the committee for interregional cooperation in the German-Polish government commission until 2017. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the German-Polish Society Federal Association. In 2009, when he was still the mayor of Versmold, the ambassador of the Republic of Poland to Germany honored the city of Versmold for its exemplary German-Polish town twinning.

In May 2014 Thorsten Klute received honorary citizenship of the Polish city of Dobczyce .

In April 2016 he was awarded the Polonicus Prize 2016 for outstanding engagement in the German-Polish dialogue .

In June 2016, the Marshal of the Małopolska Region (Lesser Poland, Cracow) awarded him the Cross of Merit of the Region .

Since March 1, 2018, Thorsten Klute has been working as a volunteer representative for citizens of Polish origin and Poles living in North Rhine-Westphalia in the Ministry for Children, Family, Refugees and Integration. Klute was already the Polonia representative of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia from 2014 to 2017.

Thorsten Klute was elected to the general assembly of the Christian Youth Village Association of Germany (CJD) in June 2016 .

Travel book author

Thorsten Klute is the author of two travel guides. Together with his wife Joanna Walas-Klute, he wrote the fourth edition of the travel guide "Krakau", which was published by Trescher Verlag in 2015. In addition, in 2006 the Trescher Verlag published the travel guide he wrote, “The Polish Forest Carpathians”.
