Dobczyce is a city in Poland in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship . It is the seat of the town-and-country municipality of the same name with around 15,200 inhabitants.
geography
The city is located about ten kilometers south of the outskirts of Kraków in the foothills of the West Beskids, more precisely in the Pogórze Wiśnickie . The river Raba flows through the town and is dammed near Dobczyce to the Jezioro Dobczyckie reservoir.
history
The first written mention of the place with a castle comes from the year 1226. The town of Dobczyce was founded according to Magdeburg law , by whom is not documented. The Dobczyce parish is mentioned for the first time in 1321. In addition to the town, the villages Skrzynka , Kornatka , Brzezowa and Burletka belonged to it . It is not documented when exactly the town charter was granted. In 1340 it was first mentioned in a document that Dobczyce had town charter. Presumably as early as the 13th century, documented, but according to a document dated November 2, 1359 there was a customs post in Dobczyce. On April 24, 1362, Casimir the Great confirmed the town charter. In 1443 a school, a parish school, was mentioned for the first time in the city. During the siege of Krakow in 1655/56 in the Second Northern War , the Swedes destroyed Dobczyce. During the subsequent peacetime, the city was often ravaged by fires. It was not until the 19th century that the residents began to build stone houses. When Poland was divided for the first time , the city came under the Austrian province of Western Galicia . In November 1914, during the First World War , the Russian army marched into the city. However, she had to withdraw from the Austrian army on December 1, 1914. After the end of the war, the city became part of the re-established Poland. On the very first day of the attack on Poland , the city was attacked by the Wehrmacht and subsequently conquered. During the occupation by the Germans, the area around the city was a place of frequent partisan attacks due to the favorable geographical conditions . In January 1945 the Red Army marched into the area and the Wehrmacht had to evade. After the war, the city was part of Poland again. As part of an administrative reform in Poland in 1999, Dobczyce, previously in the Krakow Voivodeship , became part of the newly formed Lesser Poland Voivodeship.
