The first Krakow airport was located east of the city center between Rakowice and Czyżyny from 1912 . From 1923 it was also used civilly. Air traffic at this airport was discontinued in 1963 and transferred to the Balice airport, which had previously been used exclusively for military purposes.
The first civil joint use of the airport was in 1964. The airport terminal was put into operation on December 10, 1968 after around five years of construction. The airport initially had one and later two terminals, one national and one international. The airport is operated by the company Międzynarodowy Port Lotniczy Kraków-Balice , based in Balice. In April 1995 the runway was extended by 150 m to 2,550 m.
On November 30, 1995, the name was extended in honor of Pope John Paul II from Poland while he was still alive. John Paul II landed at the airport on most of the pilgrimages (I, II, III, VI, VII and VIII pilgrimages) to Poland. Even the Popes Benedict XVI. and Francis landed in Balice on their pilgrimages to Poland.
Ryanair has been offering flights from Balice since 2003/2004; the airport has been a hub for the airline since 2012. Since 2017, planes have also been taking off overseas from Balice. A transatlantic connection has been in place since July 3, 2017 . Polskie Linie Lotnicze LOT flies a Boeing 787 to Chicago once a week .
